Hartsfield–Jackson is the world's busiest airport by passengers and one of the busiest by movements, and the reason is Delta: its home hub generates the large majority of flights, from 717s and A220s to A350s heading for Europe, Asia and South America. That makes ATL a numbers game rather than a variety show — you can log hundreds of movements a day, and the interesting stuff is the foreign long-haul carriers, the freighters on the cargo complex between 9R/27L and 10/28, and whatever comes out of Delta's TechOps maintenance base. Five parallel east–west runways handle the traffic: 8L/26R and 8R/26L on the north side, 9L/27R and 9R/27L in the middle, and 10/28 on the south. Generally the outer runway of each pair is for arrivals and the inner one for departures. West flow (landing 26R, 27L and 28) is the most common configuration, with east flow when the wind turns. Winter gives the best light, as the low sun stays in the south.

Domestic Terminal North Parking (Daily) top floor
The fourth floor of the north daily deck looks across the north runways, with all 8L landings and 26L departures in range. Light poles make ground shots impractical, but it is the easiest legal vantage point at the terminal.
- Getting there
- From I-85 follow signs to Domestic Terminal North Parking and enter Daily Parking (not Hourly or Economy); drive to the top level. MARTA Red and Gold lines stop at the Domestic Terminal. Paid parking. Most spotters report no problems, but police occasionally ask questions — keep away from the ramps and between parked cars.
- Best time
- Most of the day, year-round, except summer mornings and evenings. Summer heat haze ruins 8L landing shots — use ATL West Parking instead.

Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel
One of the best-known spotting hotels in the world. South-facing rooms on the upper floors have balconies looking straight at runways 8R/26L and 8L/26R and the business-jet ramp, so you can follow the north complex from a chair.
- Getting there
- On the north side of the airport off Virginia Avenue, with a hotel shuttle from the terminal. Ask for a high-floor south-facing room at booking and again at check-in. The Delta Flight Museum, with a Boeing 747-400 among its exhibits, is nearby — check its opening hours.
- Best time
- Summer mornings and evenings, when the sun is low in the east or west. In winter the south-facing view is backlit most of the day.

Old Dixie Road by Catalina restaurant (Hapeville)
An open area beside a Mexican restaurant east of the field, under the approach to 26R — the busier arrival runway of the north pair in west flow. 26L traffic is visible too.
- Getting there
- 4110 Old Dixie Road, Hapeville. Drive north on US-41 until the road becomes two lanes again; park north of the open space. Food and toilets in the restaurant — be a customer.
- Best time
- West flow (26R arrivals). All day in winter; in summer roughly 11:30–16:30.

ATL West Parking deck, level 7
The newer parking deck by the rental car centre gives an unobstructed view of 8L arrivals from its north side, with 9R arrivals visible further away. The best garage option when the airport runs east flow.
- Getting there
- Follow airport signs to ATL West Parking, or ride the ATL SkyTrain from the Domestic Terminal. Go to level 7. The southwest corner may need a Peach Pass to drive in — park on the northeast side and walk across. Paid parking.
- Best time
- East flow (8L arrivals) most of the day except summer mornings and evenings; 9R only on early summer mornings and evenings. Heat haze over distance in summer.

Riverdale Road and Terminal Parkway airport sign

- Drive to the ATL Park-Ride lot or a nearby hotel lot and walk along the road to the sign. The Park-Ride lot has a free shuttle from the terminal. Paid parking at the lot.

- Most of the day year-round, except summer mornings and evenings; best light in winter.

Clark Howell Highway by Comfort Suites
A grassy verge across from a row of shops under the approach to runway 28, the southern runway, which mostly carries domestic arrivals. Close and fairly low.
- Getting there
- Clark Howell Highway at the Comfort Suites; park opposite by the shops (better on weekends) and walk to the grass on the hotel side. A Subway and a gas station are further down the road.

- West flow (28 arrivals), most of the day except summer mornings and evenings.

Spotters use the top floors of the North and South Daily decks and ATL West Parking regularly, usually without problems, but police or airport staff do occasionally ask people to leave. Keep a low profile and be polite.
Which way does Atlanta usually land?
