Planespotting Austin — KAUS
Austin-Bergstrom sits on the site of the former Bergstrom Air Force Base, southeast of downtown, and it is one of the few US airports that has built a dedicated place for people who watch aircraft. Two parallel runways run north–south: the 9,000 ft east runway 18L/36R, opened with the civil airport in 1999, and the long 12,250 ft west runway 18R/36L inherited from the Air Force. Both were renumbered from 17/35 in 2021 after magnetic drift, so older guides and photos still use the old names. Central Texas winds blow from the south most of the year, so south flow (landing and departing on 18L/18R) is the default, with north flow on cold-front days in winter. Southwest dominates the ramp, but the real draws are the occasional long-haul widebody, a busy cargo side and some of the heaviest bizjet surges in the country during SXSW in March and the US Grand Prix at the nearby Circuit of the Americas in October.

Family Viewing Area (Golf Course Road)
The airport's official viewing park on the east side of the field, right beside the 18L threshold and touchdown zone. Raised concrete platforms let an adult shoot over the fence, and a sign lists aircraft silhouettes and tower frequencies. In south flow you get line-ups and touchdowns almost in front of you; helicopters from the neighbouring hangars come and go most days.
- Getting there
- Drive to the end of Golf Course Road on the east side of the airport, next to the Texas State Aircraft Pooling Board hangars; free parking lot, picnic tables and shade trees. No public transit reaches it — car or rideshare only.
- Best time
- Mornings. You face west across 18L/36R, so the sun is behind you until around noon; afternoons turn backlit. South flow is the better direction here because traffic touches down right in front of the platforms.
- Lens
- Wide to mid zoom — 24–105 mm covers a 737 at the threshold; 100–400 mm for the west runway.
Blue Garage, 5th floor (west corner)
The top of the terminal parking garage gives an overview of the whole west side: every arrival and departure on the long 18R/36L runway plus pushbacks from the western gates. It is also the spot locals use for shots of jets landing with the downtown Austin skyline behind them.
- Getting there
- Follow signs for the Blue Garage off Presidential Boulevard, keep left after the ticket barrier and drive up to the 5th floor, west corner. Paid parking by the hour or day — check current rates. Ongoing terminal expansion can change access, so verify before you go.
- Best time
- Late morning to early afternoon, when the sun is high enough to light the runway side of aircraft. Works for 18R arrivals and departures and 36L departures.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm for the near taxiway and gates, 150–400 mm for aircraft further down 18R.
Rental Car Garage top deck
The roof of the consolidated rental car facility looks over the eastern end of the terminal, where international and several domestic carriers park, and across to arrivals and departures on 18L. A good backup when the viewing park is backlit.
- Getting there
- Park in the Blue or Red Garage (they connect to the rental car building), take the escalator to the top level and follow the stairs and corridor out to the open roof edge facing the terminal. Paid parking; occasionally staff have asked people to move on — leave politely if asked.
- Best time
- Noon to sunset, with the sun moving round to the west behind you as you look east toward 18L.
- Lens
- 24–70 mm for aircraft at the gates, 70–300 mm for runway shots.
SH 71 sidewalk by the Park & Zoom lot
A wide sidewalk north of the terminal, along State Highway 71 next to the covered Park & Zoom parking, sits under the final approach to 18L. Walk along it to fine-tune the angle and get clean side-on shots of everything from regional jets to Gulfstreams on short final.
- Getting there
- Park in a nearby paid lot or take the airport shuttle and walk; a rideshare drop at the curb is quickest. Stay on the sidewalk and well away from the highway lanes. Lot names and layout change with construction — check the current airport map.
- Best time
- South flow (landings on 18L), noon to sunset when the sun has moved to the west and lights the approach side.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm; a 737 fills roughly 140 mm, a bizjet needs 300 mm or more.

What you'll see
Southwest runs a large focus operation and supplies most of the day's 737-700 and MAX 8 movements, with American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, Frontier, Spirit and Allegiant filling the rest. Long-haul is the treat: British Airways has flown the 787 from London for over a decade, with Lufthansa, Condor and other transatlantic and Mexican carriers appearing on a seasonal basis. FedEx, UPS, Amazon and DHL keep a cargo ramp busy at night. Being the state capital, Austin sees steady corporate and Texas state aircraft, and bizjet counts explode around SXSW in March and Formula 1 week in October, when visitors line the ramps with Globals and Gulfstreams.
FAQ
What's that plane over Austin?
Check Spotterra's live map: every ADS-B-equipped aircraft around Austin appears with its type, registration and route, updated in real time. It runs in the browser and costs nothing.
Is there an official plane-watching spot at AUS?
Yes — the Family Viewing Area at the end of Golf Course Road on the east side, with parking, picnic tables and raised platforms to see over the fence. It faces west, so come in the morning.
Why do old photos say runway 17L/35R?
Both runways were renumbered in 2021 to match magnetic drift: 17L/35R became 18L/36R and 17R/35L became 18R/36L. The pavement itself did not move.
When is the best time for bizjets in Austin?
Formula 1 race week at Circuit of the Americas in October and SXSW in March. Set a Spotterra alert for business jets and you will hear about the interesting arrivals before they land.
