Planespotting Baltimore — KBWI
BWI Thurgood Marshall is the Washington region's low-cost gateway and a Southwest Airlines stronghold — roughly two of every three flights wear the airline's colours. What makes it worth a visit for spotters is the Thomas A. Dixon Jr. Aircraft Observation Area, a county park with a playground and picnic tables sitting right under the approach to runway 33L. The airport has two main runways that work as a pair: when the wind blows from the north, west or southwest, arrivals land on 33L and departures use 28; with east or south winds the roles swap, so 10 takes arrivals and 15R departures. The short 15L/33R is reserved for props and light bizjets near the GA terminal. Because 33L arrivals are the most frequent configuration, the Dorsey Road corridor on the south side of the field is where most local spotters spend their afternoons, with the morning option at a golf range just down the road.

Thomas A. Dixon Jr. Aircraft Observation Area
BWI's official viewing park, directly beneath the final approach to 33L. Every jet arriving in the prevailing configuration passes low overhead — Southwest 737s, BA widebodies and the cargo heavies — and the angle works for full side-on shots as well as bellies. The BWI Trail loops through the park.
- Getting there
- 1911 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie. From I-97 take exit 15 and follow Dorsey Road west; the park is on the south side. Free parking, portable toilets and a playground; also reachable on foot or by bike via the BWI Trail. Check park hours before going.
- Best time
- 33L arrivals (north, west or southwest wind). Afternoon to sunset all year, when the sun is behind you to the southwest.
- Lens
- 60 mm fills the frame with a 767 or 787, around 100 mm for narrowbodies and bizjets.
Arundel Golf Park
The morning answer to the observation park, a little further along Dorsey Road on the same 33L approach. The upper deck of the driving range gives a clean view of arriving aircraft without trees in the way; from the parking lot a few light poles need timing.
- Getting there
- 1501 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie. Free parking at the golf park or the gravel lot by the road. The driving range opens around 9:00 and the owners tolerate spotters — behave accordingly and ask before using the restrooms.
- Best time
- 33L arrivals from sunrise to late morning; once it turns backlit, move to the observation park.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm.
Charnwood Road
The spot for east-wind days, when everything arrives on runway 10. Charnwood Road runs under the approach on the west side of the airport and offers several roadside positions; aircraft are visible for a long time before landing.
- Getting there
- From Dorsey Road turn onto Candlewood Road, then continue onto Charnwood Road. Park on the roadside or in business lots outside working hours. No toilets or shops nearby.
- Best time
- Runway 10 arrivals (east or south wind). Works most of the day; in summer it is backlit near sunrise and sunset.
- Lens
- 100 mm for a 767, about 140 mm for narrowbodies.
Royal Farms at Dorsey Road and Aviation Boulevard
A gas-station lot near I-97 exit 15 that sits under the final approach to runway 28. That runway is not often used for landings, so treat this as an opportunistic spot with coffee and restrooms on hand.
- Getting there
- Leave I-97 at exit 15; the station is just off the ramp (northbound: turn right from Dorsey Road onto Aviation Boulevard). Park as a customer and buy something.
- Best time
- Only when 28 is used for arrivals. Usable all day; summer sunrise and sunset are backlit.
- Lens
- 80–120 mm.
BWI Observation Gallery
An indoor, landside gallery on the upper level by the B/C security checkpoint, with a 737 cockpit section and live tower audio. It overlooks the B and C concourses — perfect for logging, less so for photos, as the tinted south-facing windows are backlit all day.
- Getting there
- Inside the terminal, no boarding pass needed. Light rail and MARC/Amtrak (BWI station plus shuttle) reach the airport. Check that the gallery is open before you go.
- Best time
- Any time for logging and listening to ATC; rainy days are its strength.
- Lens
- 50–300 mm, shooting through glass.

What you'll see
Southwest dominates with wall-to-wall 737-700s, -800s and MAX 8s. American, Delta, United, Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, Alaska, Allegiant and Avelo fill out the domestic board, with Air Canada Express to Toronto. Transatlantic flights are few but photogenic: British Airways to Heathrow, Condor to Frankfurt and Icelandair to Reykjavik, plus seasonal leisure routes to the Caribbean and Central America. The cargo complex is busy — FedEx, UPS, DHL, Atlas and Amazon Air — and the proximity to Washington brings government and corporate jets, while Andrews and Fort Meade traffic shows up overhead on the live map.
FAQ
What's that plane over Baltimore?
Spotterra's live map tracks every ADS-B aircraft around BWI, Martin State and the Washington airports in real time. Tap any plane to see its type, registration and where it's headed.
Which runway does BWI land on?
Usually 33L, with departures off 28, whenever the wind has a northerly or westerly component. In east or south winds arrivals switch to runway 10 and departures to 15R.
Is the observation park the best spot?
On 33L days, yes — in the afternoon. Mornings are better at Arundel Golf Park on the same approach. On runway 10 days go to Charnwood Road on the opposite side of the airport.
Can I spot from the parking garages?
Spotters have reported being asked to leave the Daily Garage roof for lacking a permit, so use the official observation park and gallery instead.
