Planespotting Charlotte — KCLT

Charlotte Douglas International Airport · KCLT / CLT

P2Connecting hub

Charlotte Douglas is American Airlines' second-largest hub, and the sheer number of movements makes it one of the busiest airports in the world by operations even though most passengers only connect. Around nine in ten flights are American or American Eagle, so the appeal is rhythm and volume rather than variety: banks of A321s, 737s and regional jets arrive and depart in waves through the day. Three parallel north–south runways, 18L/36R, 18C/36C and 18R/36L, carry the traffic, with the crosswind 5/23 used rarely; 18R/36L on the west side is mainly an arrival runway in either direction, and a fourth parallel runway is under construction. The airport opened a permanent public overlook beside 18R, which has made Charlotte noticeably more spotter-friendly. The North Carolina Air National Guard base on the east side flies C-17s, and the Sullenberger Aviation Museum is next door. Spotterra tells you the flow direction and pings you when a Guard C-17 or a Lufthansa A350 is inbound.

Where to spot

CLT Airport Overlook

The airport's permanent public viewing area on the west side, beside runway 18R/36L. Arrivals and departures on 18R pass in front of you, aircraft vacating 36L come close on the high-speed exits, and you look across toward 18C/36C. Construction of the new parallel runway currently blocks part of the view toward the centre runway.

Getting there
Follow the blue CLT Airport Overlook signs and the access road up to the site. Free parking, toilets on site and food trucks at some weekends. No public transport to the overlook itself. The fence is low enough to shoot over without a ladder.
Best time
18R/36L traffic from sunrise to noon; 18C/36C in the afternoon. Usable all year.
Lens
200–300 mm.

Hourly parking deck — west side

The top floor of the hourly deck next to the terminal looks west over the taxiways and runway 18C/36C. In south flow you get aircraft taxiing out close by; in north flow every 36C departure climbs out with the Charlotte skyline possible in the background.

Getting there
Enter from the main airport entrance road and keep right for the Hourly Deck, then drive to the top floor. Hourly parking is expensive and space is tight — at times it has needed an advance reservation, so check the airport website. A walkway links the deck to the terminal.
Best time
Sunrise to noon all year; runway shots before the heat haze builds.
Lens
200 mm for taxiways, 300 mm or more for runway and departures.

Hourly parking deck — east side

The other side of the same deck faces the ramp and runway 18L/36R, the runway Guard C-17s usually use because it is closest to the military apron. Departures off 36R are already airborne by the time they pass.

Getting there
As for the west side; walk to the east edge of the top floor.
Best time
Noon to sunset. 18L arrivals are only sharp in winter, when haze is lower.
Lens
200–300 mm, longer for 36R departures.

Sullenberger Aviation Museum car park

The museum north of the Air National Guard base, home of the Miracle on the Hudson A320, has a car park with a view of departures off 36R. Combine a visit to the museum with a morning of north-flow departures. Do not use the open ground next to the museum toward the military ramp — Guard personnel will move you on.

Getting there
Via Minuteman Way to the end. Museum facilities inside during opening hours; check times on the museum's website.
Best time
North flow (36R departures), sunrise to noon.
Lens
100–200 mm.

Wallace Neel Road — 18R/36L

Small hills along Wallace Neel Road on the west side give a direct view of arrivals on 18R/36L. It only works in the colder months — in summer the trees along the runway are in full leaf and block most of the view.

Getting there
Drive along Wallace Neel Road toward the airport and pull off where you do not block traffic; stay close to your car. Local police sometimes ask spotters to move, so weekends are calmer. No facilities.
Best time
Roughly October to April, from noon to sunset.
Lens
150 mm for an A320 or 737, 200 mm or more for regional jets.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

American Airlines and American Eagle account for most movements: A319, A320, A321, 737-800 and 737 MAX on mainline routes, and CRJ and E175 regional jets from PSA, Piedmont, Envoy and Republic. American's 777s and 787s serve Europe and the Caribbean in season. Foreign carriers are few: Lufthansa with the A350 and British Airways from London, plus Air Canada. Delta, United, Southwest, Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue and Contour add variety. FedEx and UPS freighters call daily, and the North Carolina Air National Guard flies C-17s from the east side.

FAQ
