Planespotting Chicago Midway — KMDW
Midway is the opposite of O'Hare: a single square mile of airfield boxed in by city streets, houses and bungalows on every side. That compact footprint is exactly what makes it fun — the approaches cross the four boundary roads at the corners, so jets pass low over traffic lights, gas stations and sidewalks where anyone can stand. Five runways are packed inside the square, but airline traffic uses the two longest, 4R/22L and 13C/31C; at roughly 6,500 ft they are short by modern standards, which keeps the fleet to 737s, A320-family jets and bizjets. Chicago weather changes the active runway often, sometimes several times in an afternoon, so the trick is to stay mobile and walk or bus to whichever corner the arrivals are crossing. The Orange Line runs from the Loop straight to the terminal, making Midway one of the easiest big-city airports in the US to spot without a car.

63rd Street & Cicero Avenue corner park
A small landscaped park on the southeast corner whose paved paths copy the airport's criss-cross runway layout. Arrivals on 31C pass just beyond the wall a few hundred feet up, and the classic shot of a Southwest 737 crossing the intersection on short final is taken from here.
- Getting there
- About 15 minutes on foot south along Cicero from the Midway Orange Line station, or CTA bus 63W to Cicero. Street parking in the side streets; restaurants on 63rd Street for food and restrooms. The runway itself is hidden by the boundary wall.
- Best time
- Only when 31C is in use for arrivals. Morning from the north side of 63rd, from about noon to sunset on the south side, so the sun stays behind you.
- Lens
- 50–100 mm for the overhead pass; a short zoom catches the street-scene context.
63rd Street & Central Avenue (southwest corner)
The mirror image at the opposite corner: arrivals on 4R and 4L come in over the intersection and a small patch of green on the corner. You can't see the runway behind the wall, but the approaches are low and clean.
- Getting there
- CTA bus 63W from the Midway station to 63rd and Central, a three-minute ride instead of a 20-minute walk. Park in the surrounding residential streets; diners along Central Avenue.
- Best time
- North-east flow (arrivals on 4R/4L), sunrise to mid-afternoon with the sun from the east and south behind you.
- Lens
- 50–100 mm.
55th Street & Central Avenue (northwest corner)
Grass verges near this intersection sit under the final approach to 13C. A quieter corner, useful when the wind sends arrivals in from the northwest, typically in winter and behind cold fronts.
- Getting there
- CTA bus 55 or 55A from the Midway station to 55th and Central, about six minutes. Street parking nearby; a gas station and restaurant on 55th Street.
- Best time
- Arrivals on 13C. Early morning from the north side of the street; from around noon to sunset move to the south side.
- Lens
- 50–100 mm.
Cicero Avenue & 55th Street sidewalk (northeast corner)
The closest spot to the terminal — a five-minute walk — under the approach to 22L. Move along the Cicero sidewalk to pick your angle on 737s and bizjets crossing the road just before the threshold.
- Getting there
- Walk north from the terminal and Orange Line station along Cicero Avenue. Stay on the public sidewalk; the airport's terminal-front kerb and parking garages are patrolled and photographers have been moved on there.
- Best time
- South-west flow (arrivals on 22L). Early morning from the south side of 55th Street, noon to sunset from the north side.
- Lens
- 50–100 mm; 200 mm if you want tighter portraits as aircraft cross the threshold.

What you'll see
Southwest is the airport: one of its largest bases, with 737-700, -800 and MAX 8 movements from dawn until late evening. Frontier, Allegiant, Delta's regional partners, Porter's Embraer E195-E2s from Toronto and Volaris A320s to Mexico add the variety. Midway is also a favourite for corporate aviation thanks to its short drive to downtown, so the FBO ramps see a steady line of Citations, Challengers, Gulfstreams and Globals, peaking around conventions and sports weekends. There are no widebodies or scheduled freighters on the short runways — rarities here are visiting bizjets and the odd air-ambulance or government aircraft.
FAQ
What's that plane over Chicago Midway?
Spotterra's live map shows every aircraft around Midway and the South Side with type, registration and route as it flies. It's free and works in the browser.
How do I know which corner to go to at Midway?
It depends on which runway is taking arrivals: 31C → 63rd & Cicero, 4R → 63rd & Central, 13C → 55th & Central, 22L → Cicero & 55th. Check Spotterra's live map before you leave and watch where the approaches line up.
Can I spot Midway without a car?
Yes. Take the CTA Orange Line to Midway; two corners are within a 15-minute walk and the other two are a short ride on the 55 or 63W bus.
Do widebodies ever land at Midway?
Practically never — the runways are around 6,500 ft. For 747s, A350s and freighters go to O'Hare instead.
