Planespotting Cincinnati — KCVG
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, across the Ohio River in Hebron, is a passenger airport of modest size wrapped around two of the biggest cargo operations in the Western Hemisphere: DHL's Americas superhub and Amazon Air's principal hub. That makes it one of the best places in the world to photograph freighters in volume — DHL A330Fs, 777Fs, 757s and 767s alongside the Amazon fleet flown by Atlas, ABX, ATI and Sun Country. The field is huge, with three parallel north–south runways (18L/36R, 18C/36C, 18R/36L) and the east–west 9/27. The 18L/36R runway on the east side is the one spotters see best, thanks to the official Airplane Viewing Area beside it, while 27 departures and arrivals can also be reached. Cargo banks run late evening and through the night, so plan daylight visits around the morning departure wave and afternoon arrivals, and expect the AVA to give you the sun behind you before noon.

CVG Airplane Viewing Area (Donaldson Road)
The airport's official viewing park, roughly midway along runway 18L/36R on the east side, with picnic tables, a playground and portable toilets. You can shoot landings and take-offs on 18L/36R, aircraft on taxiways S and T heading for runway 27, and — from near the entrance — arrivals on 27. The ground rolls, so walk along the fence to find a position where the fence drops out of frame.
- Getting there
- Off Donaldson Road east of the field; free parking. Car needed. Open roughly 8:00–22:00 — check current hours before going.
- Best time
- 18L/36R movements from sunrise until noon, when the sun is in the east behind you. Runway 27 arrivals from late morning into the afternoon.
- Lens
- About 190 mm for a 747, 280 mm for a CRJ-900.
Terminal parking garage roof
The top level of the main garage looks out over the Concourse A ramp and runway 18L, with Delta's maintenance hangar the only major obstruction. The afternoon complement to the viewing area, and a good place to catch passenger widebodies and freighters on the same runway.
- Getting there
- Follow signs to the top level of the main terminal garage and drive to the far east side. Paid parking; restrooms and food in the terminal via the stairs or lifts.
- Best time
- Afternoon through evening, when the sun has moved into the west behind you.
- Lens
- 160–210 mm.
Economy lot driveway on Donaldson Highway
Just beyond the threshold of 18L, aircraft pass directly overhead on short final — good for head-on and belly shots, and side views from the grass beside the driveway. A heavy DHL or Amazon freighter at this height is the shot people come for.
- Getting there
- Pull into the economy lot driveway off Donaldson Highway, a couple of minutes from the terminal. Airport police patrol this road regularly, so make it a short stop timed for specific arrivals rather than a long session.
- Best time
- Southbound operations (18L arrivals). Morning gives the best light on the side-on angle.
- Lens
- 100–130 mm for widebodies.
Limaburg Road
On the west side of the airport under the runway 27 departure path. Westbound departures climb out low overhead, giving dramatic belly shots of loaded freighters; occasional runway 9 arrivals pass here too.
- Getting there
- Limaburg Road west of the field; park legally and walk to the public grass verge. Airport police have asked spotters to move on here before, so keep a low profile and comply if asked.
- Best time
- Runway 27 departures; in winter all day, in summer from late morning into the afternoon.
- Lens
- About 100 mm for a 747-8.

What you'll see
Cargo is the reason to come. DHL's superhub brings its own A330Fs, 777Fs, 757s and 767s plus contract flying by Atlas, Kalitta and others, while Amazon Air's hub hosts 767s and 737s operated by Atlas, ABX, ATI and Sun Country. Visiting 747-400Fs and 747-8Fs are common. The passenger side is led by Delta, Allegiant and American, with United, Southwest, Frontier and Breeze, Air Canada Express, Mexican carriers and a transatlantic Delta flight to Paris. Freighter banks peak late evening and overnight, with a departure wave around dawn.
