Planespotting Detroit — KDTW
Detroit Metro, in Romulus about 20 miles west of downtown, is Delta's second-largest hub after Atlanta and a busy Spirit base, which means a steady stream of A350s and A330s to Europe and Asia mixed with Delta Connection regional jets and yellow Spirit Airbuses. DTW has six runways in three pairs. The four long north–south runways, 3L/21R, 3R/21L, 4L/22R and 4R/22L, do almost all the work, typically with arrivals on the outer runways 21L and 22R or 3R and 4L, and departures on the inner pair. The east–west 9/27 pair sees use mainly in strong crosswinds. The McNamara Terminal sits in the middle of the field with the smaller Evans Terminal on the north side, and the airport's parking garages are among the more relaxed places to photograph in the US. Late summer and autumn football Sundays bring visiting NFL team charters to the FBO ramp. Spotterra shows which runways are in use and flags the unusual arrivals.

McNamara Terminal parking garage
The big garage beside Delta's McNamara Terminal gives two different spots in one place. From the east side you look over runways 21L/21R and the taxiways Mike and Whiskey, close to aircraft holding for 3L; from the southwest corner you see Delta gates and 22L departures.
- Getting there
- From Eureka Road take John D. Dingell Drive and follow signs for McNamara Terminal parking; drive or walk up to the top floors. Hourly parking fee. Food and toilets in the terminal. Garage patrols have generally left spotters alone.
- Best time
- East side from about 3 pm to sunset; southwest corner from sunrise to noon.
- Lens
- 70–150 mm for departures, under 100 mm for aircraft holding at 3L, 200–300 mm for landings.
Big Blue Deck (Evans Terminal garage)
The long-term garage on the north side by the Evans Terminal looks straight onto the runway 3L departure roll, with aircraft rotating in front of you, plus line-ups for 21R and movements at the Signature FBO, including government and sports charters.
- Getting there
- Follow W. G. Rogell Drive and the signs for long-term parking at the Big Blue Deck. Usually quiet; parking fee applies. Food and toilets in the Evans Terminal.
- Best time
- Afternoon to sunset. Best when 3L departures are running.
- Lens
- 150–230 mm for departures; around 220 mm for the FBO ramp.
Middlebelt Road at Goddard Road — 21L arrivals
An empty gravel lot east of the airport right under the 21L approach. Arrivals on 21L include many of Delta's widebodies, and the angle is clean and low. Police have driven past without bothering spotters.
- Getting there
- Corner of Middlebelt Road and Goddard Road, Romulus — a few minutes south of I-94. Pull into the gravel area off the road. Fast food and hotels a minute north.
- Best time
- South flow (21L arrivals), sunrise to noon.
- Lens
- 50–200 mm; A330s and 757s around 150 mm.
Comfort Inn Metro Airport, Wick Road — 22R arrivals
The hotel strip north of the airport sits under the 22R approach, and the west edge of the Comfort Inn car park next to a field gives a clean view of arrivals. Departures off 4L pass here when the flow reverses.
- Getting there
- Wick Road near I-94, Romulus. Park at the west side of the lot; non-guests have been tolerated, but be discreet and buy a coffee. Toilets and a Starbucks inside.
- Best time
- 22R arrivals from sunrise until noon.
- Lens
- 80 mm for an A350, about 130 mm for an A320 or 737.

What you'll see
Delta dominates with A320-family, 737, 757 and A220 aircraft, Delta Connection CRJs and E175s, and A330-300, A330-900 and A350 widebodies to Amsterdam, Paris, Seoul, Tokyo and other long-haul points. Spirit adds a big A320neo operation, alongside Southwest, American, United, Frontier and Alaska. International carriers include Lufthansa, Air France, Turkish Airlines, Royal Jordanian, Icelandair and Air Canada. UPS, FedEx and charter freighters serve the automotive industry, corporate jets are common, and in autumn visiting NFL teams arrive on charter widebodies.
FAQ
What's that plane over Detroit?
Spotterra's live map shows every ADS-B aircraft over Detroit and southeast Michigan in real time, with type, registration and route — perfect for checking whether that widebody is a Delta A350 or a team charter.
Can I photograph from DTW's parking garages?
Spotters regularly use the McNamara garage and the Big Blue Deck and generally report no trouble. You pay normal parking; stay courteous if security asks what you are doing.
Which runways are used at DTW?
Mostly the north–south quartet: in south flow, arrivals on 21L and 22R and departures on 21R and 22L; in north flow, the reverse on 3/4. Runways 9/27 come into play with strong east or west winds.
When do the NFL charters arrive?
Visiting teams usually fly in the day before a Detroit Lions home game and park at the FBO ramp, which is visible from the Big Blue Deck.
