Planespotting Fort Lauderdale — KFLL

Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport · KFLL / FLL

P2Leisure hub

Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood is one of the friendliest big airports in the US for spotters: Broward County runs two official viewing areas, one per runway, and one of them even pipes the tower frequency through loudspeakers. The airport is a low-cost and leisure gateway rather than a legacy hub, which gives it a different flavour from Miami next door — JetBlue, Southwest and Spirit fill the gates, Canadian carriers pour in all winter, and Latin American and Caribbean airlines arrive throughout the day. There are two parallel runways: the longer 10L/28R north of the terminals carries most of the legacy and heavier traffic, while the shorter 10R/28L on its embankment over US-1 is used by Spirit, JetBlue and southbound flights. South Florida's easterly trade winds mean 10L/10R operations most of the year, so morning sun from the east is in your face at the western viewing areas only briefly; winter light is good almost all day.

Where to spot

Ron Gardner Aircraft Viewing Area (SW 39th Street)

The county's official north-runway viewing area at the threshold of 10L, with a loudspeaker playing tower communications. Arrivals cross the fence low enough that it never enters the frame, and taxiway C runs directly in front, so departures queueing for 10L pass at almost arm's length.

Getting there
Car only: from I-95 take the Griffin Road exit west, Anglers Avenue north, SW 42nd Street, then the perimeter road and SW 39th Street to the dead end. Large free lot; open roughly 7:00–23:00, check before you go. No toilets or food, and it gets busy on warm weekends.
Best time
East flow (10L arrivals and departures), which is the norm. In winter it works all day; in summer the midday sun climbs steeply and heat haze builds off the queue of waiting jets.
Lens
150 mm for a 737 on the runway, under 40 mm on the taxiway; a short stepladder placed back from the fence helps for taxi shots.

Airport Greenbelt Park (South Perimeter Road)

The official south-runway viewpoint: a raised platform with a handrail next to the parking lot lets you shoot cleanly over the fence at movements on 10R. A paved path east along the runway leads to a treeless rise that is the better position when the airport turns to 28L.

Getting there
4300 block of S Perimeter Road. From I-95 take Griffin Road east, cross the small bridge and turn left at the first light into the large free lot. Without a car it is a 20–25 minute walk from the Tri-Rail Fort Lauderdale Airport station.
Best time
10R arrivals and departures from the platform, all day in winter. For 28L operations walk east along the path to the open mound.
Lens
100–200 mm; a little longer from the eastern mound.

Hibiscus Garage roof

The top deck of the Terminal 1 parking garage looks out between Terminals 1 and 2 over the north ramp and the full length of 10L/28R. 28R arrivals are still airborne as they pass, and 10L departures rotate at a flattering angle from this height.

Getting there
Follow the yellow signs for Terminal 1 parking and take the lift or the ramp to the roof; stand in the gap between Terminals 1 and 2. Paid parking; food and restrooms in the terminals.
Best time
Most of the day, especially for 10L departures; in summer some positions turn backlit in the afternoon. Bring water and shade — the roof is exposed.
Lens
200–400 mm.

Terminal Drive upper level between Terminals 2 and 3

A shaded stretch of sidewalk with seats on the departures level where the road curves between Terminals 2 and 3. It overlooks taxiways B and C and the T2/T3 gates — ideal for close-ups of Air Canada, Delta and JetBlue on the move.

Getting there
Park in the Palm Garage, walk into Terminal 2 and up to the upper level; the viewing point is where the roadway bends. Reachable by bus and the airport shuttle, no car required.
Best time
Almost all day; summer afternoons can be backlit and hazy towards the far runway.
Lens
50–200 mm.

Dania Beach Pier

When the wind swings west and arrivals turn onto 28L, they pass over the coast near Dania Beach — combine a beach day with approach shots of the Caribbean turboprops and bizjets. Not worth the trip on normal east-flow days.

Getting there
US-1 south, then east on Dania Beach Boulevard (A1A) over the Intracoastal Waterway and into the Dania Beach Pier and Marina lot. Paid city parking; restaurant on the pier.
Best time
28L arrivals only. Sunrise to sunset in winter, late morning to mid-afternoon in summer.
Lens
300–400 mm — aircraft are still fairly high here.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

JetBlue and Southwest dominate, with Spirit (much reduced after its restructuring), Allegiant, Delta, American and United filling the rest of the domestic board. Winter is the highlight: Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat, Porter and Flair bring snowbirds from Canada, many charters arriving on weekends. Latin America and the Caribbean add Avianca, Copa, Azul, LATAM, Volaris, Caribbean Airlines and Bahamasair, plus island turboprops and a steady flow of bizjets to the FBOs. Widebodies are rare enough to chase — an Azul A330 or a seasonal transatlantic flight is the exception, not the rule. FedEx and UPS freighters appear mostly at night.

FAQ

What's that plane over Fort Lauderdale?

Pull up Spotterra's live map: every aircraft over Broward County with its type, registration and route, updated in real time from ADS-B — handy for telling a WestJet snowbird charter from a Bahamas-bound turboprop.

Where is the viewing area with the ATC speakers?

That is the Ron Gardner Aircraft Viewing Area at the dead end of SW 39th Street, beside the threshold of runway 10L. You can stay in your car and listen to the tower over the loudspeaker.

Can I spot FLL without a car?

Partly. Airport Greenbelt Park is a 20–25 minute walk from the Tri-Rail airport station, and the Terminal 2/3 upper-level sidewalk is reachable from the terminals. The 10L viewing area needs a car.

When is the best season?

November to April: the Canadian charters are flying, the sun is lower and the heat haze is manageable. Summer is hot, humid and stormy in the afternoons.
