Planespotting Honolulu — PHNL

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport · PHNL / HNL

P2Pacific hub

Daniel K. Inouye International is the crossroads of the Pacific: a civil airport that shares its runways with Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam, so a single morning can deliver a JAL or Korean widebody, a Hawaiian inter-island hop, an F-22 from the Hawaii Air National Guard and a C-17 bound for Guam. There are four paved runways plus two water lanes. Northeast trade winds blow most of the year, so the normal pattern is arrivals on 08L and 04R with departures off 08R/26L — the Reef Runway, built on landfill in the lagoon. When Kona winds swing to the southwest everything reverses to 26 and 22. Spotting here is a car game: almost every spot sits on the southeast side along Lagoon Drive, the sun is high and harsh, heat haze ruins long shots by mid-morning, and the fences were raised in 2025, so bring something to stand on. Boeing delivery flights to Asia often refuel here, which adds brand-new 737s to the mix.

Where to spot

Lagoon Drive general aviation parking lot

The classic Honolulu spot at the far southwest end of Lagoon Drive. You get Reef Runway departures off 08R climbing out over the water, arrivals onto 04L and 04R in the distance, and bizjets and freighters taxiing right past the lot. Since mid-2025 the fence is taller and standing on the old concrete blocks no longer clears it.

Getting there
Drive about 4 km southwest along Lagoon Drive from the Nimitz Highway end, past the hangars, and park in the official lot at the end. No food, water or toilets here. A small stepladder kept clear of the fence, or a car roof, is now needed to shoot over the wire.
Best time
Trade-wind operations (08R departures, 04L/04R arrivals). Early morning gives the best light for 04 arrivals and for aircraft taxiing to 08R; heat haze builds fast after mid-morning.
Lens
24–300 mm covers it: taxiing jets fill the frame at 50 mm, 04R arrivals need 200 mm or more.

Palekona Street lot (business aviation apron)

A dirt parking area at the end of Palekona Street that looks straight onto the business aviation and light aircraft aprons. Bizjets, BBJs and the odd Gulfstream on a Pacific crossing park in front of you, and with a gap in the ramp you can see movements on 04R/22L and 04L/22R behind them.

Getting there
Shortly before the end of Lagoon Drive turn right onto Palekona Street, follow it to the end and pull onto the unpaved lot on the left. Car only; shoot through gaps in the fence or from a car roof, keeping a distance from the wire.
Best time
Morning, when the sun is behind you over the apron. Kona-wind days put 22L departures right in view.
Lens
18–300 mm — wide for parked bizjets, long for the runways.

Kaulele Place (Makani Kai Air / Blue Hawaiian ramp)

The end of Kaulele Place puts you beside the helicopter and commuter ramps used by Makani Kai Air and Blue Hawaiian, with the cargo carriers' small freighters and the 04L/04R runways beyond. It is also where Boeing delivery aircraft sometimes park during their refuelling stop on the way to Asia.

Getting there
Turn off Lagoon Drive onto Kaulele Place and drive to the end; park by the commuter and helicopter facilities. Several fence positions work, so walk the perimeter of the public lot to find your angle.
Best time
Sunrise to late morning in winter, earlier in summer when the sun gets steep quickly.
Lens
70–400 mm for runway traffic, wider for helicopters and Caravans parked nearby.

Airport parking garages (domestic and international)

The upper decks of the two garages opposite the terminal give the widest view on the field: inter-island ramp, international gates, cargo area and 08L/26R, with the military ramp in the distance. Best spot for logging widebodies on stand rather than for clean flight shots.

Getting there
Public paid parking at the terminal. The eastern international garage faces the long-haul gates and runway; the western domestic garage faces the inter-island ramp. Keep a low profile — the Hickam side is visible and security does ask questions.
Best time
Mainly a summer spot, when the sun swings north and lights the ramp from behind you; early morning is best for heat haze.
Lens
100–600 mm; heat haze limits anything beyond the nearest taxiway.

Sand Island State Recreation Area

A shoreline park across Keehi Lagoon that works when Kona winds put arrivals onto 26L, especially for aircraft flying a wide turn onto final over the harbour. A relaxed alternative to the fence spots, with the city skyline in some angles.

Getting there
Sand Island Access Road off Nimitz Highway, then follow signs to the state park. Free parking inside; check park opening hours before you go.
Best time
Only useful on Kona-wind days (26L landings), which are most common in winter.
Lens
100–400 mm.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

Hawaiian Airlines (now under Alaska Air Group) runs the base: A321neos and A330s to the mainland, 787s on long-haul and 717s shuttling to Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. United, Alaska, American, Delta and Southwest add mainland narrowbodies and widebodies, while Japan dominates the international side — JAL, ANA (including the A380 'Flying Honu' when scheduled), Zipair — plus Korean, Qantas, Air New Zealand, Philippine and Fiji Airways. FedEx, UPS and Transair's 737 freighters work the cargo ramps, Kamaka Air flies DC-3s on island cargo runs, and Hickam provides F-22s, KC-135s and C-17s, with fighter waves on weekday mornings. Winter brings the most stable weather and best light.

FAQ

What's that plane over Honolulu?

Spotterra's live map shows every ADS-B transponder over Oahu in real time — airline, type, registration and route — so you can tell an inter-island 717 from a Hickam tanker at a glance. Free, in the browser.

Which runways does Honolulu use most?

Under the usual northeast trade winds, arrivals use 08L and 04R and departures go off 08R, the Reef Runway. Kona winds from the southwest reverse the flow to 26 and 22, which is when Sand Island becomes useful.

Do I need a ladder at Lagoon Drive?

Since the 2025 fence upgrade, yes or a sturdy car roof. Spotters report that ladders are tolerated if kept a few feet back from the fence; standing right at the wire is no longer allowed by security.

Can I photograph the military aircraft?

Hickam shares the runways, so you will see F-22s, C-17s and KC-135s from the civil spots. Stay on public land, do not point long lenses at base facilities from the west side, and expect polite questions from sheriff's deputies or airport security.
