Planespotting Louisville — KSDF
Louisville is the home of UPS Worldport, the company's global sorting hub and the reason SDF ranks among the world's busiest cargo airports. Almost the entire UPS Airlines fleet passes through: 747-8Fs and 747-400Fs, 767-300Fs, 757s and A300-600Fs, plus contract widebodies from Atlas, Kalitta and Western Global. The heaviest action is the overnight sort, but there is a useful arrival wave in the late morning and departures in the afternoon, so daylight photography is entirely possible — check a flight tracker before you go. Two parallel runways, 17L/35R and 17R/35L, handle nearly everything, with the shorter 11/29 used occasionally. Flow direction can change several times in a day, so watch the wind. The MD-11, once a UPS staple here, is gone: UPS retired the type in January 2026 after the fatal November 2025 crash of one of its MD-11s departing SDF. Unusually for a US cargo hub, the airport runs an official observation area.

Express Shuttle Parking Lot (official observation area)
The airport authority's own aircraft-watching lot at the end of Administration Drive, beside runway 17L/35R. Arrivals on 17L pass close by and heavy departures off 35R climb out in front of you. Being official, it is the most relaxed place at SDF.
- Getting there
- Drive Terminal Drive to its end and turn right onto Administration Drive; the lot is at the far end. Without a car take a TARC bus to the terminal and walk east from the arrivals level past the employee lots. The first two hours are free; check current rates on the airport parking website.
- Best time
- Late morning to sunset, with the sun moving round to the south-west behind you. Mornings are into the light.

Terminal parking garage, level 4
The top level of the only terminal garage overlooks the approach to the western runway and gives a good, comfortable view of arrivals plus the passenger apron. A sensible base if you want facilities nearby.
- Getting there
- Enter the terminal garage and take the lane for stays over four hours to reach level 4. No permit is needed, but airport police may approach you — calling them in advance avoids questions.

- Sunrise to late morning; from early afternoon you are shooting into the sun.

Crittenden Drive by the Republic Airways hangar
A dead-end road almost at the midpoint of 17R/35L, west of the field. You see everything on that runway as well as UPS aircraft taxiing on taxiway A and the parallels beyond; a 747-8F on the taxiway fills the frame. Shots go through the fence mesh.

- From I-264 take the Crittenden Drive exit and drive north on Crittenden Drive to its end at the fence by the Republic Airways hangar; park at the dead end. No facilities.
- Best time
- Late morning to sunset, with the sun from the south and west.

- 50–200 mm; very wide for a 747 passing on the taxiway.
Old Park Boulevard (35L departures)
A quiet street in a cleared former housing area north-west of the airport, under the climb-out from runway 35L. Heavy UPS departures pass at a good height for side and belly shots; walking up towards Crittenden Drive adds 17R arrivals, though fence wire will show in the frame.

- From I-264 take the Crittenden Drive exit, then Park Boulevard straight through the East Woodlawn Avenue lights, right on Wabasso Avenue and right again onto Old Park Boulevard. Roadside parking, nothing nearby.

- North flow (35L departures), late morning to sunset.

UPS employee lots on Grade Lane (17L and 35L approaches)
South of the airport, open UPS employee car parks on Grade Lane sit under the final approaches: the eastern lot near Highway 1747 is right for 35R arrivals, the western one by the 35L approach for that runway. Close, low arrivals, but this is private property.
- Getting there
- Grade Lane south of the airfield, from Highway 1747 (Fern Valley Road area) westwards. TARC routes serving the UPS facilities run mainly at shift times. Keep a low profile and leave if asked — or park at a nearby restaurant and walk.
- Best time
- North flow arrivals. Eastern lot: afternoon to sunset; western lot: sunrise to late morning.
