Marseille Provence Airport · LFML / MRS

P2Helicopter plant

Marseille Provence sits at Marignane on the shore of the Étang de Berre, 25 km north-west of the city. What sets it apart from other French regional airports is the Airbus Helicopters factory on the north side of the field: on weekdays there is an almost constant flow of new H160s, H175s, Super Pumas and military types on test and delivery flights, mixed in with the airline traffic. The main runway is 13L/31R (3,500 m), which handles nearly everything in both directions; the shorter 13R/31L is mainly a backup. The Mistral blows from the north-west, so runway 31 is the usual sight when it is windy, and that is also when the best spots — the hill by the helicopter plant and the approach under 31 — come alive. Spring and autumn give the clearest air; summer brings heavy heat haze over the lagoon and the runways.

Where to spot

The hill by the Airbus Helicopters plant (D20/D9)

A grassy mound near the helicopter factory with a raised view over almost the entire airfield. On 31 operations you get arrivals, departures from slightly above and taxiing traffic, plus helicopters hover-testing in front of the plant. Only light aircraft that vacate early escape you.

Getting there
By car on the busy D20; take the exit toward the D9 and park in the small space on the right just after the junction. No facilities. No public transport worth using.
Best time
31 in use, from sunrise until about noon. Heat haze builds later.
Lens
100–200 mm; an A320 on arrival is about 150 mm.

Impasse de la Piste (under the 31 approach)

An area of rough ground directly beneath the glidepath to 31R and 31L, where you can move around to choose the angle and the light. It is the classic place for close arrival shots in a Mistral; widebodies fill the frame at a surprisingly short focal length.

Getting there
Drive toward Marignane centre on the D9C; at the roundabout take the small lane to the right (Impasse de la Piste) and continue to the dirt area at the end. No facilities.
Best time
31 arrivals, from noon until sunset.
Lens
50–300 mm (a 777 is around 55 mm, a Dash 8 around 260 mm).

Bamboo grove by the service gate (Boulevard François Berenguer)

A patch of bamboo near an airfield service entrance with a view of the runway in both directions. It works for departures and arrivals whichever way the wind blows, and a ladder lifts you over the fence for ground shots.

Getting there
Park at the cemetery car park, walk along Boulevard François Berenguer, cross the D20E and continue straight on. Do not park in front of the gate or block the road.
Best time
Any runway direction, noon to sunset. Haze is severe on hot days.
Lens
100–500 mm.

Avenue Henri Fabre / Route de la Plage corner

A roadside bend next to the water near the fence, facing the south-eastern end of the field. It covers landings on both 13 runways and departures off 13L; 13R take-offs are hidden from here. The runway is nearly a kilometre away, so this is a long-lens spot.

Getting there
Drive to where Avenue Henri Fabre meets Route de la Plage and park at the roadside. Beach restaurants are close by.
Best time
13 in use (south-easterly winds), noon to sunset; summer haze is a real limit.
Lens
200–500 mm; an A319 on 13L is about 410 mm.

Étang de Berre shore by the General Aviation Terminal

The lagoon-side road in front of the GA terminal offers several positions, including a small rise for a raised angle on 13L arrivals and departures and nearby taxiing aircraft. A short section of mesh fence beside the GAT also looks onto the cargo and GA apron, where freighters, bizjets and helicopter-plant visitors park.

Getting there
Park in one of the harbour-area car parks; there is one right next to the spot. At the GAT fence keep a low profile, skip the ladder and do not linger when people are being boarded.
Best time
Shore: 13 in use, sunrise to late morning in summer only. GAT fence: late afternoon to sunset in summer.
Lens
70–400 mm on the shore, 30–200 mm at the apron fence.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

Most of the day is A320s and 737s: Air France, easyJet, Ryanair and Volotea, which bases aircraft here, plus Transavia and the usual European network carriers. North Africa is a big market, so Air Algérie, Tunisair and Royal Air Maroc are daily sights. Long-haul is modest and seasonal — Air Transat to Montréal and, since May 2026, to Québec City with the A321LR. Early mornings bring DHL, ASL and West Atlantic freighters. The Airbus Helicopters plant is the unique element: weekday test and delivery flights of civil and military helicopters, occasionally visiting transports collecting them, and firefighting aircraft deployed for the summer season.

FAQ

What's that plane over Marseille?

Open Spotterra's live map: every aircraft over Marseille, the Étang de Berre and Provence shows up in real time with type, registration and route — including the helicopters on test flights when they broadcast ADS-B.

Which wind do I want for spotting at LFML?

North or north-west — the Mistral. It puts traffic on runway 31, which is when the hill by the helicopter plant and the Impasse de la Piste approach spot work best.

When do the Airbus Helicopters test flights happen?

On working days, Monday to Friday; weekends are quiet at the plant. The hill on the D20 gives the best view of the factory and hover tests.

Is there public transport to the spots?

No. Buses and the train shuttle serve the terminals only; plan on a car or long walks.
