Planespotting Minneapolis — KMSP
Minneapolis–Saint Paul is Delta's northern hub and Sun Country's home base, and by US standards it is unusually welcoming to spotters: the airport built an official aircraft viewing area in the middle of the field, next to the cargo complex. The layout is tight and a little confusing. Two parallel runways, 12L/30R and 12R/30L, carry most traffic either side of Terminal 1; 4/22 crosses them; and 17/35 runs along the west side, normally used for arrivals on 35 and departures on 17 so that jets stay away from south Minneapolis. Whether 12 or 30 is in use depends on wind, with the long-haul widebodies favouring 12R/30L. The north side is the Minnesota Air National Guard base, so C-130s are a regular sight. Winters are brutally cold and snowy, which makes de-icing season interesting but spotting uncomfortable — most visitors come between May and October. Spotterra tells you which runway is busy and pings you for Guard or cargo movements.

MSP Aircraft Viewing Area, Cargo Road
The airport's official spotting site, at the end of Cargo Road past the FedEx building, between the runways. Departures and arrivals on 12R/30L pass in front, aircraft taxi close by on the parallel taxiways, and you can see across to Terminal 2 and runway 4/22. It is the one place on airport property where you can shoot without a permit.
- Getting there
- From MN-77 take E 66th Street, which becomes Longfellow Avenue, then follow Cargo Road to its end; free parking, picnic tables. From Bloomington take 24th Ave north, 77th St west and Longfellow north. A small stepladder is accepted to clear the fence — do not stand on the tables.
- Best time
- Both 12 and 30 operations. Light is behind you from late morning in spring and summer into the evening; in winter the useful window is roughly 8 am–4 pm.
- Lens
- 75–125 mm for most runway shots; a longer lens for Terminal 2 and 4/22.
Taft Park and the Home Depot lot, Richfield
A neighbourhood park on a small rise northwest of the field, right under the approach to 12R. Arrivals pass close and low, and the Home Depot garden-centre hill next to it gives a slightly better angle.
- Getting there
- From MN-77 take the E 66th Street exit, Richfield Parkway, then E 63rd Street to the Taft Park lot or the north corner of the Home Depot car park. Portable toilet near the basketball courts; shops and food nearby.
- Best time
- 12R arrivals. Usable most of the day; haze builds on hot summer afternoons.
- Lens
- 75–125 mm.
Mall of America — East parking ramp
The top deck of the Mall of America's east ramp, south of the airport, looks onto arrivals to runway 35 and departures off 17. Easy to combine with a meal or with a non-spotting partner who would rather shop.
- Getting there
- Follow signs to Mall of America East Ramp parking and drive to the top level. METRO Blue Line light rail runs from downtown and the terminals to the mall. Mall security has occasionally asked spotters to leave.
- Best time
- 35 arrivals in the afternoon, roughly 1 pm to sunset in summer, from late morning in winter.
- Lens
- 100–200 mm.
Metro Drive and American Boulevard, Bloomington
The street and hotel area just north of the mall, on the other side of the 35 approach. It complements the mall ramp: the same arrivals, but with the morning sun behind you, including FedEx, UPS and DHL freighters.
- Getting there
- From the Mall of America head north, turn onto American Boulevard East, then Metro Drive. Stand along the sidewalk; hotel lots are for guests. About a 20-minute walk from the mall's light-rail station.
- Best time
- 35 arrivals, sunrise to noon year-round.
- Lens
- 50–250 mm; an A320 is about 160 mm, a 767 about 180 mm.

What you'll see
Delta and Delta Connection fly most movements: A320s, 737s, A220s, 717s and E175s, with A330-300, A330-900 and A350 widebodies to Amsterdam, Paris, Seoul and Tokyo. Sun Country runs its 737 fleet from Terminal 2 alongside Southwest, Frontier and other low-cost carriers; American, United, Alaska and JetBlue add more. KLM, Air France, Icelandair, Air Canada and WestJet are the main foreign visitors. Amazon, DHL, FedEx and UPS freighters operate daily, and the Air National Guard's C-130s fly from the north side.
FAQ
What's that plane over Minneapolis?
Spotterra's live map lists every ADS-B aircraft above the Twin Cities right now — type, registration and route — so you can tell a Delta A350 from a Guard C-130 in seconds.
Is there an official spotting area at MSP?
Yes. The aircraft viewing area at the end of Cargo Road is free and open to the public. It is the only spot on airport property where photography is allowed without a permit; garages and the cell phone lot are not spotter-friendly.
Which runway does MSP use?
Most traffic uses the parallel 12L/12R or 30L/30R depending on wind, while 17/35 typically handles 35 arrivals and 17 departures. Widebodies tend to use 12R/30L, which is the runway in front of the viewing area.
Can I see military aircraft at MSP?
Yes. The Minnesota Air National Guard flies C-130s from the north side, and they often use the main runways. A Spotterra military alert tells you when one is up.
