Planespotting Nashville — KBNA

Nashville International Airport · KBNA / BNA

P2Southwest station

Nashville International grew faster than almost any US airport in the last decade, and it is now one of Southwest's biggest stations, with a single daily transatlantic link to London. The layout is unusual: three parallel north–south runways — 02L/20R on the west, 02C/20C in the middle and 02R/20L on the east — plus a long diagonal 13/31 that only comes out on rare crosswind days. In south flow, which dominates in summer, arrivals use the outer runways and most departures roll on 20C; in north flow the centre runway takes arrivals from the south. Spotters should know one thing up front: the long-standing free observation area at the end of Vultee Boulevard on the west side was barricaded in spring 2026 for airport development, so the guides and maps that still send you there are out of date. What remains is a short list of legal spots — and the airport police take the fence line seriously, so stick to them.

Where to spot

Portview Drive / Knight Valley Drive (runway 02C end)

The south end of the centre runway, in a former neighbourhood where most houses were bought out for noise. The ground is slightly elevated, so the fence is not a problem, and in north flow every 02C arrival crosses low in front of you; in south flow you get departures from 20C lifting off toward you. This is now the main free spot at BNA.

Getting there
From Murfreesboro Pike turn onto McGavock Pike and follow it a few blocks to Portview Drive, a dead-end street where you can park on the pavement edge (not on the grass). Knight Valley Drive runs along the threshold; if you cross it, stay behind the crash barrier and well back from the airport fence. No public transport — car or rideshare. ID checks by airport police do happen.
Best time
Afternoon to sunset, when the sun swings round behind you. North flow for overhead arrivals, south flow for rotating departures.
Lens
70–300 mm; a 737 on short final fills about 230 mm, a 757 around 130 mm.

Hilton Nashville Airport Terminal rooftop terrace

The hotel opened right at the terminal in 2024 and its rooftop pool and terrace look over the C and D gate ramps, the A gates to the northwest and the east runway 02R/20L. You get Southwest 737s taxiing below you, every 20L arrival and 02R departures, plus a bar for the non-spotter in your group.

Getting there
Walk from the terminal or use the hotel's own car park, which is cheaper than terminal parking and can be validated at the restaurant — ask at the front desk. The outdoor terrace has been open to non-guests in the afternoon, but it can close for private events, so check the hotel website before you go.
Best time
Afternoon to evening for runway shots. The ramp is mostly backlit, and summer heat haze is strong until the sun drops.
Lens
70–200 mm covers the taxiway (a Southwest 737 is about 130 mm); 100–400 mm for runway action.

Airside concourses (with a boarding pass)

If you are flying anyway, the glass along Concourses C and D faces Southwest's main ramp and the east runway, and the A/B concourses face the other carriers and the centre runway. It is the only place to get close ramp shots now that the west-side area is gone.

Getting there
Only after TSA screening with a valid boarding pass. Allow time — BNA's checkpoints can be slow at peak.
Best time
Early morning departure bank and the late-afternoon push, when the ramps are fullest. Reflections are worst with interior lights on after dark.
Lens
24–105 mm against the glass; a rubber lens hood helps cut reflections.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

Southwest dominates, with hundreds of daily 737-700, -800 and MAX 8 flights and crew bases that make Nashville a near-hub. American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, Allegiant, Frontier and Spirit add A320-family types and regional jets from Embraer and Bombardier families. British Airways is the long-haul star with its daily London Heathrow service, and Air Canada and seasonal Mexican and Caribbean flights round out the international list. FedEx and Amazon run the regular cargo, often early in the morning. Berry Field Air National Guard Base shares the field, so transient military types appear from time to time, and the music and convention calendar brings heavy bizjet traffic.

FAQ

What's that plane over Nashville?

Open Spotterra's live map to identify it — type, registration, route and altitude for every ADS-B aircraft over Middle Tennessee, in real time and free in any browser.

Is the BNA observation area at Vultee Boulevard still open?

No. The airport authority closed it in spring 2026 to develop the west side of the field. Older guides and map pins still show it — don't go there and don't try to shoot from the fence nearby.

Which runway is used most at Nashville?

In south flow arrivals land on 20R and 20L and departures mostly use 20C; in north flow the centre runway takes arrivals. The crosswind runway 13/31 is rarely active. Spotterra estimates the flow from the live METAR.

Does anything widebody fly into Nashville?

Yes — British Airways' daily London Heathrow service, plus occasional charters and military visitors. Schedules shift by season, so set a Spotterra widebody alert rather than relying on a printed timetable.
