Planespotting New York LaGuardia — KLGA
LaGuardia is squeezed between Flushing Bay and the neighbourhoods of Queens, and that tight footprint is exactly why spotters like it: the aircraft come in over streets and water close enough to shoot with a short zoom. The airport has two crossing runways, 04/22 and 13/31, each only about 7,000 ft long, and the usual pattern pairs one for arrivals with the other for departures — land 04 and depart 13, land 22 and depart 31, or land 31 and depart 04. Which combination runs depends on the wind and on what JFK is doing next door. A perimeter rule keeps most flights within roughly 1,500 miles, so expect almost no widebodies; the attraction is volume, Delta and American shuttles, a huge variety of regional jets and the city skyline behind approaches. The rebuilt terminals have changed the airport, but Planeview Park is still the classic place to stand, and Spotterra shows you live which runway is in use before you set off.

Planeview Park, 23rd Avenue
A small strip of grass and benches beside the runway 04 threshold in East Elmhurst. Arrivals on 04 pass very low over the park edge, and from the benches you can also see 22 arrivals rolling out. For 04 shots many people step out onto the 23rd Avenue sidewalk between roughly 85th and 96th Streets to vary the angle.
- Getting there
- 23rd Avenue, East Elmhurst, Queens. Free street parking alongside; about a 20-minute walk from Terminal B via 94th Street over the Grand Central Parkway. The M60 SBS runs along Astoria Boulevard, one block south. Stand on a bench to clear the fence.
- Best time
- 04 arrivals from sunrise to around noon (heat haze builds later); 22 arrivals in the late afternoon.
- Lens
- 24–105 mm for 04 arrivals — they are almost overhead. Around 100 mm covers most shots.
Grand Central Parkway footbridge at 31st Drive
A pedestrian overpass and small waterside park off Ditmars Boulevard with a view across the bay toward the 31 approach. You get aircraft on final for 31 and departures off 13 banking away to the south.
- Getting there
- Ditmars Boulevard opposite 31st Drive, East Elmhurst; free parking along Ditmars. Trees limit the view from the bridge, so walk down to the shoreline path. No facilities.
- Best time
- 31 arrivals from late morning to sunset; 13 departures in the afternoon.
- Lens
- 400 mm for arrivals, 500 mm or more for banking departures.
Flushing Bay Promenade
The waterfront path on the east side of the bay, under the curving approach to runway 31 that follows the Flushing Bay shoreline. It is the place for banking shots of aircraft turning onto short final.
- Getting there
- Search for Marina East / Flushing Bay Promenade; there is a parking lot by the marina, which fills up on weekends. Alternatively park on Ditmars Boulevard and walk along the bay. Busy with joggers and cyclists — keep the path clear.
- Best time
- 31 arrivals, from around noon until sunset.
- Lens
- 300–400 mm and more for banking aircraft.
Hermon A. MacNeil Park, College Point
A waterfront park on the College Point peninsula, northeast of the airport across Flushing Bay. Arrivals to runway 22 pass along the western shoreline, and you get a more natural water backdrop than from the Queens side.
- Getting there
- Poppenhusen Avenue, College Point, Queens; free parking along the park. A car is the practical option. Walk the western promenade to choose your angle. Benches and shade, but no shops nearby.
- Best time
- 22 arrivals, sunrise to noon.
- Lens
- 300–400 mm; a 737 or A320 needs about 350 mm.

What you'll see
Delta and American run large operations here, including the Boston, Chicago and Washington shuttles, with Republic, Endeavor, Envoy and other regional partners flying E175s and CRJ900s. Southwest, United, JetBlue, Spirit and Frontier add more narrowbodies, and Air Canada and WestJet are the main foreign carriers. Because of the perimeter rule, widebodies are virtually absent and A321s and 737-900s are the largest regular visitors. There is a little business aviation and no scheduled cargo. Traffic is fairly flat through the year; thunderstorms in summer cause big disruption.
FAQ
What's that plane over New York LaGuardia?
Check Spotterra's live map: it shows each aircraft around LaGuardia and over Queens in real time with type, registration and route, from the ADS-B network.
Where is the best spot at LaGuardia?
Planeview Park on 23rd Avenue. When 04 is the landing runway, aircraft pass a few dozen metres overhead; when 22 is in use, head to MacNeil Park in College Point instead.
Do widebodies fly to LGA?
Practically never. A perimeter rule limits most nonstop flights to around 1,500 miles, so the fleet is regional jets and narrowbodies. For widebodies go to JFK or Newark.
Why does the runway at LGA change so often?
LaGuardia's runway pairing depends on wind and on JFK's configuration, since their arrival paths interact. Spotterra shows the current pattern from the live traffic.
