Planespotting Newark — KEWR
Newark Liberty is the New Jersey corner of the New York airport triangle and the one most spotters pick when they want long-haul variety without JFK's distances. United runs one of its biggest hubs here, so the field is a constant shuffle of 737 MAXs and A321neos interleaved with 777s, 787s and 767s heading to Europe, India, Asia and South America. Two parallel runways carry almost everything: 4L/22R is mainly the departure runway and 4R/22L the arrival runway, whichever direction is in use. The short crosswind runway 11/29 only comes alive in strong east or west winds and then takes mostly regional jets. On top of the passenger flow, Newark is one of FedEx's largest stations, so widebody freighters work the north side every night and morning. Police and Port Authority patrols are frequent and spotting is tolerated rather than welcomed — the spots below are the ones that tend to work, and Spotterra tells you when something unusual is on final.

Elizabeth Center parking lot (IKEA / Floor & Decor)
The standard Newark spot: a big retail car park east of the field, right under the 04R approach. Every arrival on 04R crosses in front of you at a comfortable angle, and departures off 22R/22L climb out overhead when the flow is reversed. It is easy to shoot from or beside the car, which keeps things relaxed with the patrols.
- Getting there
- Elizabeth Center shopping area, IKEA Drive, Elizabeth NJ — about ten minutes from the terminals via North Ave E. Park on the Floor & Decor side rather than at IKEA itself; NJ Transit buses serve the mall. Private retail property: carry ID, stay polite and leave if asked.
- Best time
- Northeasterly operations (04R arrivals). Sunrise to early afternoon has the light behind you; in winter the window closes around midday.
- Lens
- 100–300 mm; a 777 on 04R fills the frame around 90–100 mm, regional jets need closer to 200 mm.
Economy Parking P6 — 22L/22R arrivals
The paid long-term lot on the north side near the 22 thresholds, where you look and behave like any other passenger with a car. Arrivals on both 22L and 22R pass in front, so this is the place for long-haul and FedEx widebodies on southwesterly days.
- Getting there
- Economy Parking P6, signposted from the airport ring road; daily fee applies. Without a car, take the free P6 shuttle bus from the lower level of Terminal C. Security does drive through — some visitors are left alone, others are asked to move on.
- Best time
- Southwesterly operations (22 arrivals). Usable all day because the sun is to the south behind you; winter light is particularly good.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm; a 737 MAX 8 is around 180 mm.
Rideshare Hold Lot, Earhart Drive
A free waiting lot for app drivers on the south side, with a sidewalk view of arrivals on 04R and, from a little further back, 04L. It is the afternoon counterpart to the Elizabeth Center lot when 04 is in use.
- Getting there
- Follow airport signs for the Rideshare Hold Lot off Earhart Drive; free parking for up to four hours, often busy late afternoon. Walk back out to the road and stay on the sidewalk. No food or toilets.
- Best time
- Northeasterly operations, mid-afternoon until sunset.
- Lens
- 200–300 mm; an A321 is around 210 mm.
Corbin Street, Port Newark — runway 29 arrivals
A niche spot by the harbour basin in Port Newark for the rare days the crosswind runway takes arrivals on 29. When it is active you get side-on shots of regional jets and occasional mainline aircraft with the port cranes nearby.
- Getting there
- From the airport take US-9 toward Port Newark, exit onto Port Street and then Corbin Street; small lot south of the basin. Do not go through the port gate — it is restricted. Car only, no facilities; keep a low profile.
- Best time
- Only with 29 in use (strong westerly winds). Late morning to late afternoon.
- Lens
- 100–200 mm; a 737-800 is around 120 mm.
Parking Garage P4 roof
Elevated view over the northern end of the terminals for taxi shots in and out of the gates nearby, including United Express regional jets. Handy without a car because the AirTrain stops at the garage.
- Getting there
- AirTrain Newark to the P4 station, then up to the top deck. Security reacts quickly here and has asked people on foot to leave — keep it short and discreet, and check before you go.
- Best time
- From about 1 pm until sunset.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm.
Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.
What you'll see
United dominates: domestic 737s and A321neos, Embraer and CRJ regional jets, and 777-200/300ER, 787 and 767 widebodies on routes across the Atlantic and Pacific. Foreign carriers include Lufthansa, SAS, TAP, LOT, Air India, El Al, Emirates, Singapore Airlines with its nonstop A350s, Air China and the all-business La Compagnie. JetBlue, Delta, American, Alaska and Spirit add domestic variety. FedEx runs a major hub on the north side with 777Fs, 767Fs and MD-11s, plus UPS and other freighters. Summer brings extra transatlantic frequencies; late evening is the main long-haul departure bank.
FAQ
What's that plane over Newark?
Spotterra's live map shows every ADS-B-equipped aircraft over Newark and northern New Jersey right now — type, registration, airline and route — so you can tell a United 777 from a FedEx freighter before it lands.
Which runway is Newark using?
Newark flips between northeast flow (arrivals 04R, departures 04L) and southwest flow (arrivals 22L, departures 22R) depending on wind. Pick Elizabeth Center or the Rideshare Hold Lot for 04, and P6 for 22.
Will police move me on at EWR?
Possibly. Port Authority and local police patrol all the spots and reactions vary by officer. Stay in or near your car, carry ID, explain calmly what you are photographing and leave if asked — never stand on a road shoulder or by a highway.
When do the FedEx widebodies fly?
Most FedEx movements cluster overnight and in the early morning, with a smaller daytime wave. A Spotterra cargo alert is the easiest way to catch one in daylight.
