Ontario International Airport · KONT / ONT

P3Cargo hub

Ontario International, in the Inland Empire east of Los Angeles, is one of the busiest cargo airports in the US and the best place in Southern California to fill a notebook with freighters. UPS runs its West Coast air hub here, FedEx and Amazon Air have large operations, and the passenger side adds Southwest and a couple of transpacific surprises. Two parallel runways run east–west: 08L/26R serves the passenger terminals and Amazon, while 08R/26L is used mostly by UPS and FedEx, whose ramps sit closer to it. Onshore breezes mean westerly operations (26L/26R) most of the time, so arrivals come in from the east over Haven Avenue. Light is best from October to March, when the low winter sun stays in the south behind you on the airport's south side and the snow-capped San Gabriel Mountains form the backdrop. The airport is redeveloping its surroundings, so the classic spots change — check recent reports before driving out.

Where to spot

South Haven Avenue (26L/26R approach)

The traditional landing spot east of the field, where arrivals to both runways cross Haven Avenue on short final. A new industrial building now stands on part of the old field, but spotters report that you can still stand on the small strip behind the newly planted trees and catch the approach.

Getting there
Car required. Park legally by the roadside — not on the gravel track, which is closed, and not in private lots where towing is enforced. Police have asked spotters not to set up by the fence on the west side of Haven Avenue; stay on the public side and be ready to explain yourself.
Best time
Westerly operations (26L/26R arrivals), roughly 08:00–17:00 with the sun in the south.
Lens
50–400 mm.

East Lowell Street

A long stretch of road along the south fence near the control tower with a view of both runways and the nearby taxiway. Departures from UPS taxi past, FedEx arrivals roll out in front of you, and Amazon and passenger jets depart from 26R.

Getting there
From Jurupa Street turn onto Tower Road, then right along East Lowell Street. The fence is high, so you need a pickup bed or a ladder used at least 10 ft back from the fence. Park on the street, not right against the fence.
Best time
Westerly operations, 08:00–17:00. Heat haze over the runways in summer afternoons.
Lens
70 mm for a 767 on the taxiway, 140 mm on 26L, about 250 mm on 26R.

Mission Boulevard (08L/08R approach)

When the wind turns east, arrivals approach from the west over Mission Boulevard. A strip of green with trees between the road and business parks gives a decent angle on 08L; 08R works but less well.

Getting there
Near Mission Boulevard and Mildred Street. Spotters recommend the ARCO station lot with its convenience store rather than the business park lots, where parking may be prohibited on weekdays.
Best time
Easterly operations only, which are the minority — mostly during Santa Ana wind events. Sun from the south, workable through most of the day.
Lens
About 150 mm for a 757.

Haven Avenue and Jurupa Street corner

A quick look-out from a raised spot by the wall at this intersection gives a partial view of the UPS apron. It is not a full spot — high concrete walls block most angles — but it tells you which freighters are on the ground before you commit to a position.

Getting there
Park at the burger restaurant on the corner and cross the road. Treat it as a brief stop, not a place to set up.
Best time
Early morning in summer, any time in winter.
Lens
50 mm for parked aircraft.

What you'll see

UPS is the headline act: 747-8Fs, 767-300Fs, 757s and A300s arrive in evening and early-morning waves, with Asian-routed freighters in between. FedEx adds 777Fs and 767s, Amazon Air brings ABX and ATI 767s, and Ameriflight feeds the network with smaller turboprops. On the passenger side Southwest dominates alongside Alaska, American, Delta, United, Frontier and Volaris, while China Airlines and Starlux fly widebodies to Taipei. December is the peak: in the weeks before Christmas the cargo ramps overflow and spotters report dozens of freighter movements in a few hours.

FAQ

What's that plane over Ontario?

Open Spotterra's live map to see every ADS-B aircraft over the Inland Empire in real time — from UPS 747-8Fs on final to traffic heading for LAX and March ARB — with type, registration and route.

When is the best time for cargo?

Evenings and the hours around dawn, when the UPS and FedEx banks arrive and depart. The pre-Christmas peak in early to mid December is the busiest period of the year.

Do I need a ladder?

On East Lowell Street, yes — or a pickup bed. Local practice is to keep any ladder or vehicle at least 10 ft from the fence.

Is there an official viewing area?

Not yet. Spotting from public roads is generally tolerated after a quick check by police, but there is no dedicated park. A viewing area has been discussed as part of the airport's redevelopment plans.
