Planespotting Oshkosh — KOSH
For 51 weeks a year Wittman Regional is a quiet county airport on the shore of Lake Winnebago. In the last full week of July it becomes the centre of the aviation world: EAA AirVenture brings more than 10,000 aircraft and around 700,000 visits, and the FAA tower becomes the busiest on the planet. Arrivals follow the famous Fisk VFR procedure, rocking wings for controllers in pink shirts and landing on coloured dots, two or three at a time on the same runway. The main runway is 18/36 (8,000 ft), called 18R/36L during the show when a parallel taxiway becomes temporary runway 18L/36R; 9/27 is the other big runway. Show grounds wrap the west side of 18/36, so you watch the airshow looking east with the afternoon sun behind you. The draw is sheer variety — homebuilts, vintage types, warbird formations, military demos, airliners and prototypes — plus seaplanes on the lake and helicopters at Pioneer Airport, all within one ticket.

Show-centre flightline along runway 18/36
The crowd line in front of the main grounds is where the afternoon airshow, mass warbird formations and military demonstrations happen. During arrival and departure hours you also get a non-stop stream of everything from Cubs to bizjets on the runway in front of you. Arrive early to claim a front-row spot with a chair.
- Getting there
- Inside AirVenture with a daily or weekly wristband; paid parking lots around the grounds and shuttle buses from Oshkosh hotels and campgrounds. Stay behind the crowd line at all times — volunteers enforce it strictly.
- Best time
- Afternoons, when the sun is in the west behind the crowd and lights aircraft over the runway. Night airshows on selected evenings give glowing, pyrotechnic shots.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm or 150–600 mm for display flying; 24–70 mm for formation passes close to show centre.
Boeing Plaza
The big static display at show centre, where the headline aircraft park: airliners, military transports and bombers, new prototypes and anniversary aircraft. It is also where you'll meet crews and get close-up details impossible at a normal airport.
- Getting there
- Centre of the AirVenture grounds, a short walk from the main gate. Busiest from mid-morning; come at opening or in the evening for clean shots without crowds.
- Best time
- Early morning or after the airshow when the light is soft and people are thinner. Midday is harsh and crowded.
- Lens
- Ultra-wide 14–24 mm for the big aircraft up close, 24–70 mm for details.
Warbirds area
At the southern end of the grounds, rows of Mustangs, Corsairs, T-6s, B-25s and jet warbirds sit on the grass, and many taxi out past spectators for the afternoon show. The taxi-out and return are often better photo opportunities than the display itself.
- Getting there
- Walk or take the internal trams south from show centre. Included in the AirVenture admission.
- Best time
- Late morning and early afternoon for engine starts and taxi-outs before the airshow; evening for warm light on the parked rows.
- Lens
- 24–105 mm on the flightline, 100–400 mm for taxiing aircraft.
Vette/Blust Seaplane Base (Lake Winnebago)
AirVenture's seaplane base sits in a sheltered bay on the lake, with floatplanes and amphibians moored along the shore and taking off and landing on the water. A calmer, completely different set of photos from the main flightline — Beavers, Cubs on floats and amphibious Lakes.
- Getting there
- Shuttle bus from the main grounds during the show; a separate location from the airport. Small, so check shuttle times and bring water.
- Best time
- Morning for calm water and reflections; the light comes from the east over the lake.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm for water take-offs, a wide angle for moored aircraft.
EAA Aviation Museum & Pioneer Airport
Open year-round beside the airport, the museum holds historic homebuilts, racers and record-setters. Behind it, the grass strip at Pioneer Airport becomes AirVenture's helicopter and airship base during the show, with rotorcraft rides lifting off all day.
- Getting there
- Off Poberezny Road next to the show grounds; separate museum admission outside AirVenture week (check hours on the EAA website).
- Best time
- Any day for the museum; during AirVenture, late afternoon for helicopter operations in warm light.
- Lens
- Wide angle inside, 70–200 mm for helicopters.

What you'll see
Outside July the field sees light GA, flight training, some corporate jets and turboprops. AirVenture week changes everything: thousands of Cessnas, Pipers, Bonanzas and Cirrus arrive via Fisk, alongside thousands of homebuilts from RVs to rare one-offs, vintage types like Staggerwings and Ford Trimotors, and the largest warbird gathering in North America. The US military brings fighters, bombers and transports for display, and airliners, airshow teams and manufacturer prototypes fill Boeing Plaza. Bizjets fill the corporate parking, and the mass departure at the end of the week is a spectacle of its own. Rarities aren't the exception here — they're the schedule.
FAQ
What's that plane over Oshkosh?
Spotterra's live map lists the aircraft around Oshkosh and the Fisk arrival with type, registration and route in real time — useful when hundreds are inbound at once. Many vintage and homebuilt types fly without ADS-B Out, so not everything appears.
When is EAA AirVenture?
Usually the last full week of July, Monday to Sunday. The 2027 edition is scheduled for July 26 – August 1; confirm dates and ticket prices with EAA.
Is it worth spotting Oshkosh outside AirVenture?
Only for the EAA Aviation Museum. Regular traffic is light general aviation; the week before the show, when arrivals start building, is a good compromise.
Which runway do Fisk arrivals land on?
Most arrivals use runway 27 or 36 (36L during the show), landing on coloured dots so several aircraft share the runway at once. The NOTAM sets the procedure each year.
