Planespotting Phoenix — KPHX

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport · KPHX / PHX

P2Long-haul hub

Sky Harbor is one of the few big US airports that openly welcomes spotters: the airport itself names the Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 garage rooftops and the Terminal 3 Sky Train station as recommended viewing spots. The layout is three parallel east–west runways — 8/26 on the north side, mostly for arrivals, and 7L/25R and 7R/25L on the south, where 7R/25L takes most cargo, military and general aviation arrivals. Phoenix often runs easterly in the morning and switches to westerly flow around midday. Because the spots look across the field from the middle, the sun is behind you for most of the day. American Airlines and Southwest generate the bulk of the traffic, which sounds monotonous until you count the special and heritage liveries both operate here. Winter is high season: cooler air, less haze and larger aircraft on the snowbird routes.

Where to spot

Terminal 4 parking garage roof

The flagship official spot, used from level 6 upward. The north side covers runway 26 arrivals, runway 8 roll-outs and American's gates; the west side looks at aircraft crossing the taxiway bridges between terminals; the south-east corner overlooks the Southwest ramp.

Getting there
Terminal 4, by car (paid garage) or free via the PHX Sky Train from Valley Metro Rail at 44th St/Washington. In summer use levels 6–7 rather than the exposed roof.
Best time
North side all day, except summer evenings when the sun swings north-west. West side from sunrise to early afternoon.
Lens
50–200 mm for the bridges and ramp, 350–500 mm for runway shots.

Terminal 3 parking garage roof

The second official garage. Level 6 gives side-on views, level 8 a more top-down angle; level 7 is blocked by a fence. The north-east corner covers the taxiway bridges and United's gates, the south side looks at aircraft exiting the south runway.

Getting there
Terminal 3, paid garage or Sky Train; food and restrooms in the terminal below.
Best time
North side all day for runway shots; bridge shots from noon to sunset.
Lens
100 mm for the bridge, about 300 mm for the runways.

East Economy garage (Sky Train)

The top deck of the East Economy garage sits under short final for runway 26, high enough above the aircraft that heat haze is rarely a problem.

Getting there
Sky Train to the East Economy station, then up to the top level. Vending machines and restrooms at the station.
Best time
Westerly arrivals on 26, from late morning onward; backlit only on summer evenings.
Lens
200–400 mm; about 330 mm for a 737.

S 40th Street & the Rio Salado path

At the end of S 40th Street a shaded platform on the Salt River path looks over arrivals onto 25L — the runway used by cargo, Guard tankers and most GA. A few hundred metres east, the path behind 3600 E University Drive suits 07L departures.

Getting there
Park in the cul-de-sac at the end of S 40th Street, not in the private lots. Watch for fast bicycles on the path. A landfill to the south-east can make it smell on east winds.
Best time
25L arrivals for most of the day with the sun behind you; backlit on summer evenings.
Lens
150–200 mm for a 737 on final, 300–400 mm for departures.

West Economy garage (former Terminal 2 site)

A low garage at the west end of the north runway — lower than the terminal garages, so closer to 8/26 with less heat haze. It is the place for touchdowns and roll-outs on runway 08 and for aircraft turning off after landing on 26.

Getting there
Park on level 1 of the West Economy garage (level 2 is employee parking) and take the stairs to the top. Food and restrooms at Terminal 3 via the Sky Train. Expect it to be closed during VIP movements such as Air Force One visits.
Best time
Runway 08 arrivals, typically in the morning; the sun is behind you most of the day except summer evenings.
Lens
100–200 mm; about 150 mm for a 737.

What you'll see

American Airlines runs one of its major hubs here and Southwest is the other giant; together they carry most passengers, which means a steady stream of A321s, 737s and regional jets plus frequent special liveries. United, Delta, Alaska, Frontier and JetBlue fill in the rest, and international service comes from British Airways, Aeromexico, Volaris, Air Canada, WestJet and Asian newcomers China Airlines and Starlux. Cargo comes from FedEx, UPS, DHL and Amazon. The Arizona Air National Guard flies KC-135 tankers from the south side. Winter brings snowbird demand and larger aircraft such as American 777s and 787s.

FAQ

What's that plane over Phoenix?

Spotterra's live map shows every aircraft over the Valley of the Sun in real time — Sky Harbor, Mesa Gateway, Luke AFB traffic and more — with type, registration and route.

Is spotting allowed at Sky Harbor?

Yes. The airport itself recommends the Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 garage rooftops and the Terminal 3 Sky Train station as public viewing spots. Off-airport, stay on public land and avoid lots the city has marked as restricted.

Which way does Phoenix operate?

Often east in the morning and west from around midday. Runway 8/26 handles mainly arrivals, 7L/25R mainly departures and 7R/25L arrivals including cargo and military. Spotterra predicts the flow from the METAR.

Is summer worth it?

Only early and late in the day. Midday heat above 40 °C causes severe haze and the garage roofs have no shade. October to April is the comfortable season.
