Planespotting San Diego — KSAN

San Diego International Airport · KSAN / SAN

P2City approach

San Diego International, still widely called Lindbergh Field, is the busiest single-runway airport in the United States and one of the most photogenic city airports anywhere. Everything uses one strip, 9/27, squeezed between downtown and San Diego Bay. The prevailing westerly wind means runway 27 is in use most of the time, and its approach is famously steep: aircraft descend over the Bankers Hill neighbourhood and past downtown towers before crossing Interstate 5, which produces the classic shot of an airliner between rooftops. Departures roll out toward Point Loma and the Pacific. Low cloud or an easterly wind occasionally flips operations to runway 9. A noise curfew bans departures between 23:30 and 06:30, though arrivals continue. The Terminal 1 rebuild opened its first new gates in September 2025 and work continues to 2028, so views around the terminal keep changing. Spotterra shows when 9 is in use and alerts you to visiting widebodies.

Where to spot

Laurel Street, Bankers Hill

The famous San Diego view: Laurel Street runs downhill toward the airport directly under the final approach to runway 27, so aircraft pass very low over the houses and the road, lined up with the street. Side streets nearby let you frame jets against rooftops, palm trees and the downtown skyline.

Getting there
Laurel Street between about 1st and 5th Avenues, Bankers Hill. This is a residential neighbourhood: park legally on side streets, stay on the sidewalk, never stand in the road, and keep noise and groups small. MTS buses run along 4th and 5th Avenues.
Best time
Runway 27 arrivals (most of the time). Midday to afternoon, when the sun moves to the south and west.
Lens
24–105 mm for the low pass; 70–200 mm to compress the approach against the buildings.

Spanish Landing Park, North Harbor Drive

A grassy bayside park on the south side of North Harbor Drive, opposite the runway. Aircraft rotating off 27 and taxiing past are side-on, and because you face north the sun is behind you almost all day. It is relaxed, public and popular with families.

Getting there
North Harbor Drive at the entrance to Harbor Island; free parking along the park. MTS route 992 between downtown and the airport runs along Harbor Drive.
Best time
Runway 27 departures; good light from morning to late afternoon year-round.
Lens
100–400 mm.

Harbor Island Drive

The narrow man-made peninsula directly across Harbor Drive from the airport has a public waterfront and a park. From its walkways you look back across the channel at departures, taxiing aircraft and landing rollouts, and across the bay toward Navy traffic at North Island.

Getting there
Harbor Island Drive, off North Harbor Drive; parking along the road and in public lots, some paid near hotels and restaurants. Easy walk from Spanish Landing.
Best time
All day for the airport side, as the sun is behind you to the south. Late afternoon gives the warmest light.
Lens
200–500 mm across the water.

NTC Park at Liberty Station

A large public park in the former Naval Training Center on the northwest side of the airport. Departures off 27 climb out and start their turn over Point Loma, which suits wider shots with the bay and the city behind.

Getting there
Liberty Station, Point Loma; free parking around the park and shops. MTS buses serve Liberty Station.
Best time
Runway 27 departures in the morning; from midday you shoot toward the sun.
Lens
100–400 mm.

What you'll see

Southwest is the biggest operator with 737s, followed by Alaska, United, American, Delta, JetBlue, Frontier, Breeze, Sun Country and Hawaiian. Long-haul visitors are few but prized: British Airways from London, Lufthansa from Germany and Japan Airlines from Tokyo, plus Air Canada, WestJet and Copa. FedEx and UPS freighters operate daily, mostly at night and early morning, along with FedEx feeder turboprops. Coast Guard Air Station San Diego sits on the southeast corner, and Navy aircraft fly from North Island across the bay. Mild weather keeps traffic steady all year.

FAQ

What's that plane over San Diego?

Spotterra's live map shows every ADS-B aircraft over San Diego in real time, with type, registration and route — including Navy and Coast Guard aircraft that transmit.

Why do planes fly so low over downtown San Diego?

Runway 27 sits right next to downtown and the approach is steep because of terrain and buildings, so arrivals pass low over Bankers Hill and cross Interstate 5 just before the threshold.

Is there a curfew at SAN?

Departures are not allowed between 23:30 and 06:30, with exceptions for emergency and medical flights. Arrivals can land around the clock, so the first departure wave starts at 06:30.

Does San Diego ever land on runway 9?

Yes, during easterly winds or low cloud. Then arrivals come in over Point Loma and the Laurel Street view is gone. Spotterra shows the live direction.
