Planespotting Washington Dulles — KIAD
Dulles is the international gateway for the US capital and a major United hub, so the long-haul share is high for an American airport: European flag carriers, Gulf A380s and 777s, African and Asian carriers, and a steady stream of government and VIP aircraft that come with being next door to Washington. Four runways serve the field: three parallel north–south runways (01L/19R, 01C/19C, 01R/19L) and the diagonal 12/30, which is used almost only for departures — runway 30 is busy in the morning. 01L/19R mainly opens at peak times. In north flow most international arrivals land on 1R, right past the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, which turns a spotting day into a museum day: Space Shuttle Discovery, the SR-71, Concorde and the Enola Gay are a few steps from the approach path. In south flow, 19C and 19L take the bulk of arrivals over the business parks of Sterling. The Silver Line Metro now reaches the terminal.

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
The most famous spot at Dulles in north flow: international heavies on short final to 1R pass low over the museum. The parking lot is partly blocked by trees and light poles, so walk to the small hill north of the lot near the parking booths for a clear view. The museum's observation tower also overlooks the airport, but through glass.
- Getting there
- Smithsonian museum off Route 28 in Chantilly; museum entry is free but parking is paid (with a short grace period). Fairfax Connector bus 983 runs from the airport terminal. Do not use the separate approach hill closer to the runway — it is signposted no trespassing and no parking.
- Best time
- North flow (1R arrivals), noon to sunset. Parking has been free after about 4 p.m., which suits the summer evening long-haul arrivals — check current museum hours.

- 150 mm for 777s, 747s and A380s, 250 mm or more for narrowbodies and bizjets.
Sully Historic Site
A Fairfax County historic park with a big lawn beside the visitor centre, under the approach to 1R a little further out than Udvar-Hazy. Quiet, free and less heat haze than the shopping-centre spots. A secure federal complex is next door, so stay inside the park rather than at its entrance.

- From Route 28 follow signs towards the Wawa gas station, then continue to the end of Sully Historic Way. The gate opens and closes automatically with sunrise and sunset. Free parking.

- North flow (1R arrivals), sunrise to noon.

Terminal parking garages (Garage 1 and Garage 2)
The top levels of the two terminal garages cover different runways at different times. Garage 2, linked to the ticketing level, is the place for 1C/19C movements in the morning, including early departures on 1C/19C at peak times. Garage 1 suits 19L arrivals and 1R departures in the afternoon.

- Silver Line Metro to Washington Dulles International Airport, or drive and pay the hourly or daily rate. Garage 2 connects to the terminal on its third floor; Garage 1 is a separate building with no toilets — reach it by the parking shuttle. Police patrol the garages and may ask for ID.
- Best time
- Garage 2: sunrise to noon. Garage 1: noon to sunset; heat haze in summer.

Economy Parking Gold Lot (Rudder Road)
The huge economy lot north of the terminal sits beneath the approach to 19L, where many European and Middle Eastern arrivals land in south flow. Move around the lot to pick your angle and follow the light across the approach.

- Follow airport signs for Economy Parking, entering via Rudder Road, and head for the Gold Lot. The first 30 minutes are free and the daily rate is modest — check current prices. Shuttle buses run to the terminal.
- Best time
- South flow (19L arrivals). All day if you swap sides of the approach; avoid harsh midday light.

Dulles Landing shopping centre (Loudoun County Parkway)
The northern car parks of this retail centre, by the Dunkin', look at departures from runway 30. Many narrowbodies turn north early, but heavies such as A380s and 777s often climb straight ahead and pass side-on.

- From Route 28 south take US-50 west, turn right onto Loudoun County Parkway and follow signs into Dulles Landing; use the northernmost lots. Food, shops and toilets on site — buy something.
- Best time
- Runway 30 departures, from noon to sunset.

- About 280 mm for a 787, 350 mm for a 737.
