Planespotting Bangkok — VTBS
Suvarnabhumi is Thailand's main gateway and the hub of Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways, handling all the long-haul flights while the low-cost carriers concentrate at Don Mueang. A third runway opened in October 2024, so the field now has three parallels: 02L/20R in the west (the new one, mostly international and cargo arrivals), 02R/20L in the centre (mostly departures) and 01/19 in the east (mainly domestic traffic using the eastern concourses). Usage patterns were still settling after the opening, so check the live direction before you choose a spot. As a rough guide, the cool-season northerly wind brings 01/02 operations from October to December, while February to April gives the best chance of southerly 19/20 flow. Every spot here is a long way from the runways, haze is the norm and the sun climbs fast, so a long lens and early starts are the price of an outstanding Asian, Gulf and charter mix.

The Phoenix Hotel rooftop, Lat Krabang
North of the airport, this budget hotel sells spotter packages that include access to its rooftop, which sits under the approaches to the 20 runways. The angle is elevated but works well for 20L; 20R is far off and hazy.

- Lat Krabang, north of the airfield; taxi or Grab from the terminal (show the address in Thai). Book a room and ask for one close to the roof terrace; the rooms themselves don't see the approach.

- Southerly flow with arrivals on 20L/20R, from sunrise to about 11:00.

Suvarnabhumi 3 Road — Bangchak petrol station
The standard morning spot for arrivals on runway 19, with the forecourt as the safest place to stand. A field further along gives a slightly better angle, but police have moved people on from there.

- Taxi or Grab to Suvarnabhumi 3 Road and get dropped at the Bangchak station; drinks and snacks in the shop.
- Best time
- 19 arrivals from sunrise to about 11:00.

Rom Klao Road footbridge by the Thai Airways headquarters
A pedestrian bridge over the road next to Thai's head office, under the evening approach to runway 19. Traffic noise drowns out the engines, so keep an eye on a flight tracker. Some spotters report being asked to leave by airport security recently.

- Taxi to the bus stop beneath the footbridge on Rom Klao Road, opposite Thai Catering. Shade on the stairs; nothing else nearby.
- Best time
- 19 arrivals from around 14:00 to sunset.

Lat Krabang canal path near the Bangkok Airways head office
South of the airport, the walkways along the Lat Krabang canal sit under the approaches to runway 01 and, further west, to 02L/02R. Security has turned spotters away from the closest bank to the runway 01 approach, but the roadside across the large bridge to the north is reported to be tolerated.
- Getting there
- Taxi or Grab to the Bangkok Airways head office car park on the side road of the highway, then walk along the fence or the canal boardwalk. A 7-Eleven is near the head office; nothing along the canal.
- Best time
- Northerly flow with arrivals on 01/02. Runway 01 works best in the afternoon; along the canal for 02L/02R you can shift position morning and afternoon to keep the light behind you.

- 80–200 mm for runway 01 arrivals; 150–280 mm for 02L/02R.
Car Park 2, top floor
A shaded corner on the roof of the terminal car park used by local spotters for departures from runway 01. No apron view, but no hassle either.
- Getting there
- From the departure level go one floor down, cross the footbridge into Car Park 2 and take the lift to the top; walk to the eastern end. All facilities in the terminal.
- Best time
- 01 departures from about 14:00 to sunset.

Miracle Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel — rooftop pool
West of the airport beside the new 02L/20R, the rooftop pool area gives views of arrivals and departures on the western runways, and it works for night shots too. Hotel staff have said the pool and terrace reopened in December 2025 after maintenance; opening hours are limited.

- On King Kaew Road, about 20 minutes by car from the terminal. Stay as a guest; rooms from the fourth floor up and corridor ends also give views.
- Best time
- Late afternoon — heat haze makes it poor before about 15:00.

What you'll see
Thai Airways runs A350s, 787s, 777-300ERs and A321neos, and Bangkok Airways adds A319s, A320s and ATR 72s on its regional network. Thai VietJet and Thai AirAsia also operate here alongside the international flag carriers from China, Japan, Korea, India and Southeast Asia. Gulf carriers bring A380s and 777s, and the European majors fly in daily. A large flow of charter and scheduled flights from Russia and Central Asia adds rare types, and cargo operators such as Thai Cargo, FedEx and DHL appear through the day. Much of the traffic moves at night and around midday, so you won't catch everything in good light.
