Paro is Bhutan's only international airport and one of the most demanding commercial airfields anywhere. The single runway, 15/33, about 2.3 km long, lies at roughly 2,235 m in a narrow valley along the Paro Chhu river, with ridges rising steeply on both sides and peaks of 5,000 m and more around the valley. The approach is flown visually; flights operate only in visual conditions between sunrise and sunset, and afternoon winds often limit operations in the windier seasons, so most movements happen in the morning. Only a few dozen pilots are qualified to fly in — one 2023 count put the number at 24. The result is a spotting experience unlike any other: an Airbus appears between the hills, banks through the valley below your eye level and is on the ground moments later. Traffic is thin, so time your visit around the day's schedule, and remember that most visitors travel in Bhutan with a licensed guide who can fit the viewpoint into the itinerary.

Paro Airport Viewpoint above Bondey
A signposted roadside pull-in on the ridge above Bondey that looks straight down the length of the runway, with the valley and Paro town beyond. From here you see aircraft come through the hills, turn in the valley below you and touch down. There is nothing else here — no shelter or kiosk.

- About 10–15 minutes by car from Paro town on the road towards Bondey, with a short walk from where vehicles stop. Free. Local families also come here to see relatives off on departing flights, so be considerate.

- Morning, when most flights operate; check the day's arrivals and departures first, because hours can pass with no movement.

Paro terminal — departure lounge
The traditional-style terminal looks over the small apron, where Drukair and Bhutan Airlines aircraft park against the mountains. Through glass, but a good way to log what's on the ground while you wait for your own flight.

On the apron — boarding and arrival
