Planespotting Brussels — EBBR
Brussels Airport at Zaventem is a mid-sized hub with a much richer mix than its passenger numbers suggest. Brussels Airlines flies long-haul to Africa and North America, Brucargo brings 747 and 777 freighters, and the military side, Melsbroek, shares the runways with the Belgian Air Force A400Ms and government jets. NATO headquarters is only a few kilometres away, so summits fill the aprons with state aircraft. There are three runways: the parallels 07L/25R and 07R/25L and the crosswind 01/19. On weekdays a preferential runway system applies: 25R mostly for departures and 25L/25R for arrivals, with 01 used in strong northerly wind and on some afternoons. The airport has no terminal terrace, but it has built two official outdoor viewing platforms, and the villages of Steenokkerzeel and Nossegem around the field offer many legal roadside spots.

Official spotting platform Nossegem (25L, by the Caricole centre)
A wooden viewing deck between runway 25L/07R and the Caricole transit centre, with the control tower opposite. You get 25L arrivals and 07R departures, and a grass hill next to the fence that is a bit closer to the rotation point. Busy and well respected by local spotters.
- Getting there
- Just south of the road tunnel under 25L, take the small road to the east to the official car park. De Lijn buses from the airport stop at 'Nossegem Spottersplatform' — bus line numbers changed in 2025, so check the De Lijn planner. Ladders are allowed only on the platform itself, not on the grass hill.
- Best time
- Early morning to early afternoon, when the sun is behind you; westerly operations.

- 50–300 mm (a 777-300ER on 25L fills about 70 mm).
Vliegbos spotting platform (runway 01)
The second official deck, in the Vliegbos woods next to a small play park. It covers landings and departures on 01, departures on 07R and the occasional late departure on 19. Shade, parking and no ladder needed; the edge of the field nearby at the 01 threshold sits slightly above the runway and is popular on sunny days.
- Getting there
- Turn off the N227 into the Namenstraat just south of the tunnel and park at the roadside or by the football canteen; a few minutes on foot. Same bus stop as the Nossegem platform, then a longer walk. Keep to the edge of the farmer's field.
- Best time
- Sunrise to noon. Runway 01 is used mainly in strong northerly winds and some afternoons, so check before you go.

Steenokkerzeel — Van Frachenlaan and the 'Renaissance Man' roundabout
In the village north of the airfield, a car park on the Van Frachenlaan opposite the cemetery and a small lay-by south of the roundabout with the winged-man statue look up at arrivals on 25R and 19. Melsbroek military traffic and cargo arrivals typically use 25R, so this is where A400Ms and freighters pass.
- Getting there
- From the N227 into Steenokkerzeel centre; parking at both spots. Shops and cafés in the village. Do not enter the cemetery or the remembrance garden — spotters are explicitly not allowed there.
- Best time
- 25R arrivals from late afternoon to sunset; 19 arrivals from early morning to noon.

Mechelsesteenweg / Kortenbergsesteenweg — 25L approach lights
Open ground between the 25L approach lights and the Steenokkerzeel water tower lets you move around for head-on or side-on shots of long-haul arrivals — Brussels Airlines A330s, Ethiopian and other non-Schengen flights all land on 25L.
- Getting there
- Official car park at the start of the Mechelsesteenweg (limited spaces); otherwise park legally in Kortenberg and walk. Bus to 'Erps-Kwerps Watertoren'. Parking rules are strictly enforced; keep out of the fields.
- Best time
- Early morning to about 14:00 on the Mechelsesteenweg side; the Kortenbergsesteenweg side works from late afternoon.

P3 holiday car park — top floor
The roof of the P3 garage overlooks runway 01/19 and the taxiways where aircraft vacate 25L and head to 07R. It is the spot to use when the light has gone at the outdoor locations, and the only one with toilets inside.
- Getting there
- Train to Brussels Airport and follow signs for P3; by car follow 'Holiday P3'. Parking is pricey, so many park elsewhere and walk. Toilets on the top floors usually require a parking ticket.
- Best time
- Late afternoon to sunset for taxiing traffic and 07R/25 action in summer. Heat haze on warm days.

Zaventem military cemetery (runway 01 arrivals)
At the end of the Kerkhoflaan, the wall of the military cemetery and the meadow behind it are right under the approach to 01 — the best afternoon option when 01 is in use.
- Getting there
- Drive to the end of the Kerkhoflaan to the car park, or walk from Zaventem station. Do not enter the cemetery. A ladder of three steps or more helps at the meadow fence.

Brussels Airlines is the base carrier, with A320s across Europe and A330s to sub-Saharan Africa and North America, and TUI fly Belgium adds 737s and 787s on holiday routes. Long-haul visitors include Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Ethiopian, United and Delta. Brucargo is a big draw: Ethiopian, Qatar, Saudia and Singapore freighters, DHL traffic and a stream of ad-hoc charters. Melsbroek brings Belgian A400Ms, government Falcons and Embraers, and NATO summits fill the ramp with state aircraft from across the alliance. The busiest window is roughly 07:00–14:00, when most long-haul flights move; the afternoon is quieter before an evening wave.
