Planespotting Rotterdam — EHRD
Rotterdam The Hague Airport, the old Zestienhoven, sits on the northern edge of Rotterdam and is the closest airport to the Dutch government in The Hague. It has a single runway, 06/24, about 2.2 km long, with a terminal and general aviation area on the south side. Traffic is modest but varied for its size: a holiday-heavy airline schedule, plenty of business jets and government visitors, flying schools, light aircraft and a trauma helicopter. The prevailing south-westerly wind puts landings on 24 most of the time, coming in over the polder from the A16/Bergschenhoek side. The airport has night restrictions, so the action runs from the first morning departures to the last late-evening arrivals. Being small, you can work almost every spot in one day and get closer to the aircraft than at Schiphol, but fences are everywhere, so a short stepladder makes a big difference.

Teugeweg — runway 24 approach
The cycle path along the Teugeweg sits under the final approach for runway 24, so 737s and bizjets pass low over your head. It is the easiest spot to reach without a car and the classic place for clean arrival shots against the sky.
- Getting there
- Metro E to Meijersplein, cross the road and walk along the N471 to the Teugeweg. By car from the A13 via the Doenkade (N209), turn onto the Landscheiding, pass under the runway and park at the Teugeweg. No toilets or food.
- Best time
- Landings on 24, from sunrise until about 14:00.
- Lens
- 150–250 mm for 737s, 300–400 mm for light aircraft.
Spazio restaurant roof (Waalhaven replica)
A restaurant built as a copy of the 1920s Waalhaven terminal, with a top deck overlooking the whole runway. It is the only comfortable spot with food and toilets on hand and covers every runway movement.
- Getting there
- Brandenburgbaan, follow signs for long-stay parking (P10); parking at the restaurant. Bus 33 from Meijersplein to the Lutonbaan stop. Always ask the staff before going up — the deck is closed for events and the current owners are less keen on spotters than the previous ones; buy something.
- Best time
- All day for logging; the light suits 24 arrivals in the morning.

Brandenburgbaan fence
Next to the restaurant, the fence along the Brandenburgbaan looks onto the main apron and the start of runway 24. There is a photo hole in the fence, otherwise a two-step ladder is enough.
- Getting there
- Same access as the Spazio restaurant (P10, bus 33 to Lutonbaan). Nothing on site.
- Best time
- Early morning until about noon, for apron shots and 24 departures.
- Lens
- 160–250 mm on the apron, 300–350 mm for 24 take-offs.
Achterdijk / Otterdijk — runway 06
On the western side near the Best Western hotel, the Achterdijk is raised above the airfield, so you can photograph aircraft lining up on 06 without a ladder and see across to the general aviation platform. Further along, the small park at the Otterdijk works for 06 arrivals.

- From the A13 follow airport signs onto the Vliegveldweg, then turn towards the Best Western and onto the Achterdijk; park near the hotel. Bus 33 from Meijersplein to Vliegveldweg.
- Best time
- Easterly operations. Arrivals work late morning to early afternoon in summer (all day in winter); line-ups and the GA platform from about 14:00 to sunset.
- Lens
- 80–150 mm for arrivals, 300–400 mm for the GA platform.
Zaventembaan — 06 arrivals and GA apron
A short road by the petrol station that looks over the general aviation apron and the approach to 06. The long-stay car park P3 next door gives another angle on arrivals, shooting between the light poles.
- Getting there
- From the Rotterdam Airportbaan turn left before the petrol station onto the Zaventembaan; park on the spot. Bus 33 to Vliegveldweg.
- Best time
- Easterly operations; late morning to early afternoon in summer.
- Lens
- 24–200 mm (a 737 on short final fills about 130 mm).
Landscheiding — north side
The narrow road along the north side of the runway is the only spot where the sun is behind you in the evening. You see 24 arrivals and departures, and 06 arrivals rolling out; the airport has cut spotter holes in the fence, but they sit at about 1.6 m.
- Getting there
- Via the Bovendijk, then the Landscheiding; park at the roadside. About 15 minutes on foot along the cycle path from the Teugeweg.
- Best time
- From around 17:00 to sunset, summer only.
- Lens
- 200–300 mm and a three-step ladder.

What you'll see
Transavia and TUI fly the bulk of the airline traffic with Boeing 737s, largely to Mediterranean and Canary Islands sun destinations, with a few scheduled city routes on top. Summer brings the biggest schedule. The real interest for many is the business and government traffic: Rotterdam is the nearest airport to The Hague, so foreign state aircraft, VIP Airbus and Boeing jets and a steady flow of Gulfstreams, Falcons and Citations turn up on the GA apron. Flying schools, aero club light aircraft and the ANWB Lifeliner trauma helicopter keep the runway busy between airline flights.

Which way do they land at Rotterdam?
