Planespotting Doha — OTHH

Hamad International Airport · OTHH / DOH

P1Transit hub

Hamad International is Qatar Airways' global hub and, for most visitors, a place you see during a transit rather than a destination in itself — and that is exactly how you should spot it. Two widely spaced parallel runways, 16L/34R (4,850 m, one of the longest in the world) and 16R/34L, sit either side of a single huge terminal; the western runway generally handles traffic to and from the west, the eastern one traffic to and from the east, with arrivals and departures on both. The prevailing northwesterly shamal makes 34 operations the usual pattern. Traffic comes in waves: dozens of Qatar Airways A350s, 777s, 787s and A380s arrive and leave within an hour, followed by quieter spells filled with Indian, African and Central Asian carriers. Qatar has no official spotting areas and authorities take a hard line on photography of infrastructure; this guide therefore only lists places inside the terminal or its hotel. Keep cameras small, shoot quickly and put them away.

Ask the sky

What flew over this morning? Where was that loud one heading? Ask in plain words — the answer comes from real recorded traffic.

Where to spot

Concourse C, gates C22–C26

The only stretch of the terminal reported to have single rather than double glazing, looking over the sole taxiway that links both runways. During a Qatar Airways wave it fills with A350s, 777s and A380s nose to tail; between waves it can be dead quiet.

Getting there
Airside only, with a valid boarding pass — head past The Orchard indoor garden towards gates C22–C26. Windows are tinted.
Best time
Sunrise to about 15:00 for the taxiway; gate shots all day. Time your transit with a hub wave.
Lens
50–300 mm; an A380 is about 110 mm, an A320 about 200 mm.

Concourse D windows near the coffee bar

Transit passengers report usable windows near the Costa Coffee in the D gates, with views over the stands on that pier. A useful second option when C22–C26 is crowded or your gate is in D.

Getting there
Airside, boarding pass required. Shoot discreetly through the glass and do not set up tripods.
Best time
Depends on the stand; morning and late afternoon have the lowest heat haze.
Lens
70–300 mm.

Oryx Airport Hotel

The hotel inside the terminal building is the safest way to watch Hamad for hours. Rooms on the right side look over part of the apron, and it is ideal for a long layover between waves.

Getting there
Inside the terminal, accessible airside for transit passengers and landside. Ask for an apron-facing room. Check the hotel's photography rules on arrival.
Best time
The early-morning and late-evening Qatar Airways banks.
Lens
70–300 mm, lens pressed to the glass.

What you'll see

Qatar Airways supplies the bulk of movements: A350-900/1000, 777-300ER, 787-8/9, A380s, A320/A321s and 737 MAX, plus a large Qatar Airways Cargo fleet of 777Fs and 747-8Fs. Between waves you see Air India Express, IndiGo, Akasa, Biman, US-Bangla, Iran Air, Kam Air, Ariana, Badr, RwandAir and other carriers rarely seen in Europe. Emirates, flydubai, Saudia, Turkish and British Airways add more. Government and VIP aircraft are strictly off-limits for cameras. Winter is the most pleasant; summer heat haze is severe.

FAQ

What's that plane over Doha?

Look it up on Spotterra's live map: aircraft around Hamad appear in real time with type, registration and route. It's free and lets you follow a whole Qatar Airways bank without pointing a camera anywhere.

Is planespotting allowed in Qatar?

There are no official spotting areas, and photography of airports and government infrastructure from outside is treated seriously. A few guides describe the ends of the departures driveway, but security has sent people away there; we do not recommend it. Airside windows and the in-terminal hotel are the only places we suggest.

When are the Qatar Airways waves?

The hub runs several banks a day, with heavy activity around the late evening and the early morning plus a midday bank. Check the airport's live arrivals board or Spotterra before you pick your transit.

Which runway is used at Hamad?

Usually 34L and 34R with the northwesterly wind. The western runway serves traffic to and from the west, the eastern runway traffic to and from the east.
