Planespotting East Midlands — EGNX
East Midlands sits between Derby, Nottingham and Leicester, right beside the M1 and Donington Park circuit, and it is Britain's busiest airport for dedicated cargo flights. DHL runs its UK hub from a huge sort centre at the western end, UPS has its own operation, and a supporting cast of contract carriers keeps freighters moving through the evening and night. By day the passenger side is mainly holiday traffic — Jet2, Ryanair and TUI. Everything uses one 2,893 m runway, 09/27. There is no preferred direction, but westerly winds mean 27 is active about three-quarters of the time. The airport is unusually spotter-friendly: the Aeropark museum, with a Vulcan, Nimrod and Argosy, has a viewing mound just north of the runway, and a marked trail runs around the perimeter from the Diseworth Road crash gate. In summer the cargo wave from about 18:00 to 21:00 lands in good evening light. Watch out for the red-route no-waiting zones on airport roads — camera vans issue fines.

Diseworth Road crash gate and Airport Trail
The traditional gathering point on the north side, at the end of a lane beside the Nag's Head pub in Castle Donington. You see both runway directions, the main apron and the DHL ramp, and the perimeter trail lets you walk along the fence to choose your angle.
- Getting there
- Diseworth Road, Castle Donington (DE74 2PS). Roadside parking, crowded when something special is due. By bus to the Nag's Head stop, then walk down Diseworth Road. Ladders must stay three metres back from the fence between movements — move when asked.
- Best time
- North of the runway, so the sun is in front for most of the day. Use it on summer mornings and evenings when the sun is in the north-east or north-west; not usable in winter.
- Lens
- 50–200 mm.
East Midlands Aeropark viewing mounds
The aviation museum's two mounds are about 170 m north of the runway; the eastern one is level with the top of the fence and gives a clear view across the airfield. Combine spotting with a walk around the Vulcan, Nimrod and other preserved aircraft.
- Getting there
- Next to the north perimeter off Castle Donington. Paid entry and limited opening days (in recent seasons Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in summer, weekends only in winter) — check before you travel.
- Best time
- Like the crash gate, it faces south into the sun; best on long summer evenings when the freighters arrive.

- 70–300 mm; wide angle for the museum exhibits.
DHL mound on the 09 approach
A raised bank among the 09 approach lights near Donington Park, high enough to clear the fence. It covers 09 arrivals, 27 departures and gives a direct view over the DHL apron where 757Fs, 767Fs, A330Fs and 777Fs are parked.
- Getting there
- Pull-ins along the road at the western end; bus to Donington Park stop. A little further along the road a small gate gives more side-on views of 09 arrivals. No facilities — a coffee shop has opened near the island by the 09 lights.
- Best time
- Runway shots work all day; the DHL ramp is front-lit from about 15:00.
- Lens
- About 100 mm for the ramp, 150 mm for runway traffic.
Picnic area by East Midlands Gateway (27 arrivals)
An open grassy area with benches off the A453 near the East Midlands Gateway logistics park, giving side-on views of aircraft landing on 27. A short walk along the fence leads to a mound overlooking the approach.
- Getting there
- Car park at the picnic area (DE74 2DL), or bus to the East Midlands Gateway bus station, which is right next to it. The lay-by on the A453 is often full of lorry trailers, so start from here and walk 5–10 minutes to the mound.
- Best time
- The picnic area is north of the approach — summer mornings and evenings. The mound is usable from about 08:00 to 17:00 in summer and all day in winter.
- Lens
- 70–100 mm for a 777F side-on, 200 mm or more for a 737 from the mound.
Radisson Blu East Midlands Airport
The on-airport hotel with rooms facing the runway. From a high room you see 27 arrivals and 09 departures — handy for logging the night cargo bank in comfort.

- On the airport site, walking distance from the terminal. Ask for a runway-facing room when booking.
- Best time
- Evening and overnight for the DHL and UPS bank.

What you'll see
Freight is the reason to come. DHL's hub brings its own 757 and 767 freighters plus aircraft from DHL-linked carriers — European Air Transport A330Fs, AeroLogic 777Fs and ASL Airlines, West Atlantic and Star Air types. UPS adds 767Fs and 747s, and there are ad-hoc Atlas, Cargolux or Antonov charters. The main cargo arrival wave runs through the evening, with departures again overnight and before dawn. Passenger flights are mostly Jet2, Ryanair and TUI 737s and 757s to holiday destinations, busiest from Easter to October; winter brings ski and Lapland charters that sometimes use unusual aircraft. Race weekends at Donington Park bring bizjets.
