Planespotting Farnborough — EGLF

Farnborough Airport · EGLF / FAB

P2Business aviation

Farnborough in Hampshire is where British powered flight began in 1908, and after eight decades of government research flying it is now a business-aviation-only airport with no scheduled airline service. It is one of the busiest private-jet airports in Europe and draws a heavier, more exotic mix than most: Global 7500s, Gulfstream G650s and G700s, large Falcons, and outside airshow periods corporate airliners up to Boeing BBJ and Airbus ACJ size. A Gulfstream service centre on the field adds aircraft in for maintenance. The single runway 06/24 is 2,440 m long; prevailing westerlies and airspace constraints mean 24 is used nearly all the time, so the eastern side along Trenchard Way is home ground. Opening hours are limited (07:00–22:00 on weekdays, 08:00–20:00 at weekends and bank holidays), so there is no night traffic. In even years the Farnborough International Airshow takes over in July. Spotterra alerts you when a rare private jet is inbound.

Where to spot

Trenchard Way (runway 24 approach)

A footpath road along the eastern perimeter, directly under the approach to 24. Jets on short final pass close enough for a standard zoom, you can catch line-ups on 24, and aircraft parked outside the Gulfstream hangar are in range of a long lens. No ladder needed — the distance makes shooting through the fence easy.

Getting there
About 15 minutes' walk from Farnborough Main station. By car, use the free lay-by beside the FAST aviation museum on the A325 Farnborough Road and walk five minutes; the old patch of tarmac by the Aviator hotel where locals used to park has been fenced off.
Best time
Runway 24 arrivals, the normal case. Morning to mid-afternoon in summer, almost all day in winter; line-ups best before midday.
Lens
50–300 mm; around 70 mm on approach, 140 mm for line-ups, 300 mm for the Gulfstream apron.

BAE Systems business park fence

At the end of a road in the business park south of the runway, the fence overlooks the runway and the Delta ramp where many business jets park. Since a new hangar was built nearby, its reflective wall causes glare, so stand toward the left of the car park and use a tall ladder.

Getting there
From the Holiday Inn roundabout on the A325 turn into the private business park, follow Aerospace Boulevard and take the last road on the right to the fence. All parking belongs to businesses: go at weekends or bank holidays, move if asked, and don't come after dark — security patrols regularly.
Best time
Mid-morning to mid-afternoon in summer, nearly all day in winter.
Lens
50–300 mm; a 5-step ladder at least (7-step to forget the fence).

Eelmoor Bridge (runway 06 end)

A small rise by the Basingstoke Canal at the western end gives an overview of the airfield and main aprons. Aircraft using runway 06 pass in front of you; with 24 in use, arrivals usually vacate early and departures are already high. A spot for easterly days.

Getting there
By car via the road through the woods off the A325, or from the Laffans Road side past the golf club. The right turn at the canal bridge is on a blind bend with fast traffic — approach from the north-west for a safer left turn. The canal bridge was being replaced from late 2025; check for roadworks.
Best time
Easterly operations on 06, which are uncommon. Mid-morning to mid-afternoon in summer, all day in winter.
Lens
150–400 mm; the fence is high, so shoot through it or from the small hill.

The Aviator hotel (runway-view rooms)

The hotel sits on the slope at the end of runway 24 and some rooms look across the airfield. A comfortable base for an overnight visit; the hotel does not welcome spotters on its grounds, so photograph from your room or from the public roads.

Getting there
On the A325 Farnborough Road next to the FAST museum. Book a runway-facing room directly; prices vary widely with exhibitions and events.
Best time
Morning arrivals on 24 with the sun from the east-south-east.
Lens
70–300 mm from the window.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

Almost all traffic is business aviation. Operators range from NetJets, VistaJet and Air Hamburg to privately owned Gulfstreams, Globals, Falcon 7X and 8X, Legacy and Praetor jets, plus corporate BBJs and ACJs within the airport's size limit. Exotic registrations from the Gulf, Asia and the Americas are common. Traffic swells around big events in London and the south-east such as Royal Ascot. The Farnborough International Airshow in July of even-numbered years brings airliner prototypes, new military types and demonstrators, with the airfield given over to the show for a week.
