Planespotting Kuala Lumpur — WMKK
KLIA, in Sepang 50 km south of the capital, is the home of Malaysia Airlines and the AirAsia group — which means one of the largest A320-family and A330 operations anywhere, all in a single afternoon. Three parallel runways sit in palm-oil country: 14L/32R on the east side, 14R/32L in the centre next to Terminal 1, and 15/33 on the west by Terminal 2 (the former klia2). Winds are usually calm, so ATC chooses the direction more or less freely, though 32/33 is the more common configuration. Runway roles change with construction and trials — recently 32R took eastern arrivals, 32L departures and 33 a mix — so check the live picture before you drive. Malaysia also gave spotters something rare in Asia: an official, shaded viewing deck next to runway 32L. A car is essential; storms build every afternoon, and police move people off the unofficial roadside spots towards the deck.

Anjung Spotter viewing deck (runway 32L)
A purpose-built roofed viewing terrace beside the perimeter road, opened in 2019 and one of the very few official spotting platforms in Asia. It sits level with 32L, so departures rotate right in front of you and heavies on 14R lift off overhead. Seats and shade make long sessions bearable.
- Getting there
- By car via the KLIA perimeter road from Terminal 1 — gravel tracks on both sides of the terrace for parking. Official hours have been 07:00–19:00; check before going.
- Best time
- Afternoon from about 14:00 in winter (16:00 in summer) to sunset. Short-haul departures that use an intersection may not pass the deck.
- Lens
- 100–300 mm; an A380 is about 100 mm, an A320 about 200 mm.
Tune Hotel KLIA Aeropolis
A budget hotel beside the cargo area, full of AirAsia crew, with open-air corridors on every floor overlooking the approach to 32R. Staff have long been relaxed about spotters, and day rooms make it a cheap base with toilets and food.
- Getting there
- Off Route 27 near the cargo complex; car or taxi from the terminals. Day rooms have been offered for spotting in the afternoon — book ahead and mention you are a spotter; corner rooms on the top floor are best.
- Best time
- 32R arrivals from noon (often 14:00–15:00 when haze drops) to sunset.
- Lens
- 180–300 mm; distances are longer than they look.
Terminal 2 observation decks
Landside decks either side of the entrance to Terminal 2 on the departures level look over AirAsia's stands and taxiways. The west deck also sees runway 15 traffic in the distance. Free and open to non-passengers, but popular with smokers.
- Getting there
- KLIA Ekspres or KLIA Transit to Terminal 2, then departures level 3.
- Best time
- All day — move between the two sides to keep the sun behind you.
- Lens
- 50–300 mm.
Terminal 2 car park, Zone B top floor
The open top deck of the Terminal 2 multi-storey car park faces runway 15/33. Runway 15 arrivals and 33 departures can be shot from here, with plenty of shade and the terminal next door for food.
- Getting there
- Walk in from Terminal 2 level 2 and take the lift to the top floor, then head towards the AirAsia headquarters building. Driving in is cheap.
- Best time
- Sunrise to about 11:00 (midday in summer).
- Lens
- 300 mm and up.
Terminal 1 observation deck
A landside deck at the end of a long corridor on the departures level of Terminal 1, looking over the Malaysia Airlines stands and the taxiway to 32R and 32L. Through glass and facing south, it is best for logging and rainy-day viewing.
- Getting there
- Terminal 1 departures level, follow the 'Observation Deck' signs. Toilets nearby.
- Best time
- From about 16:00; backlit most of the day in winter, better in summer.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm.
Sama-Sama Hotel 9th-floor terrace
The hotel attached to Terminal 1 has an open terrace on the ninth floor for guests booked on that floor, set up specifically for watching aircraft on the eastern runway.
- Getting there
- Linked to Terminal 1. Book a ninth-floor room to get access; confirm the terrace is open when booking.
- Best time
- Afternoon.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm.

AirAsia and AirAsia X dominate with A320ceo/neo, A321neo and A330s from every group airline — Thai, Indonesia, Philippines and Cambodia — plus Batik Air. Malaysia Airlines flies A350-900, A330-300/neo and 737s, and MASkargo runs A330Fs. Daytime visitors include Singapore, Scoot, Thai, Vietnam Airlines, Cathay, China Eastern and Southern, Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Saudia, Turkish, KLM, Air France and British Airways, with occasional Iraqi Airways, Mahan or US-Bangla. Cargolux, FedEx and UPS add freighters. January to August is drier.
FAQ
What's that plane over Kuala Lumpur?
Spotterra's live map tracks every ADS-B aircraft around KLIA and Subang in real time, with type, registration and route — very useful here, because three runways means you need to know which one a special will use.
Where is the official spotting deck at KLIA?
Anjung Spotter is next to runway 32L on the airport perimeter road. It is roofed, has seats, and police direct spotters there from the unofficial roadside locations. You need a car to reach it.
Is roadside spotting allowed around KLIA?
The perimeter-road gravel areas are on airport land, and since 2024 police have been moving people on or taking their details. Stay briefly, explain honestly what you are doing, avoid climbing on rocks to clear the fence, and use the official deck for long sessions.
Do I need a car to spot at KLIA?
Yes. Apart from the terminal decks and car park, the locations are spread around a large perimeter with no taxis, and a car is your shelter from the afternoon thunderstorms.
