Planespotting Newcastle — EGNT
Newcastle International at Woolsington is the main airport of North East England and an easy, relaxed place to spot. Everything happens on one runway, 07/25, about 2,330 m long, with the terminal on the south side. Westerly winds put runway 25 in use most days, so the classic spots line the 25 approach around Dinnington and the Havannah Nature Reserve, where the parking is free and the light suits most of the day in winter. When the wind swings east, the Tyne and Wear Metro takes you to Callerton Parkway, a short walk from the 07 approach, which makes Newcastle one of the few UK regionals you can work without a car. Fences are low enough that no ladder is needed. The highlight of the schedule is the daily Emirates 777-300ER from Dubai around midday, but the RAF is the wildcard: transports and fast jets regularly use Newcastle for practice approaches and go-arounds.

Havannah Nature Reserve car park
The main spot for runway 25 arrivals, on the opposite side of the field from the terminal. You get clean side-on shots of everything landing on 25 from a small patch of grass by the car park entrance. For more of a head-on angle, walk out to the junction of Coach Lane and Main Road.
- Getting there
- Free car park off Coach Lane near Dinnington, with bins provided. A bus stop sits right by the reserve; spotter guides list line 44 from the city centre to Dinnington — check the current timetable. Dinnington has a small shop.
- Best time
- Runway 25 arrivals. In winter good all day; in summer it becomes backlit from late afternoon.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm for airliners, 300 mm+ for light aircraft.
Main Road layby (runway 07 departures)
About 400 m along Main Road from Havannah, a small layby opposite a dip in the hedge. The local favourite is a 07 departure lifting off with the control tower behind it; 25 arrivals are visible too, though further away than from the nature reserve.
- Getting there
- By car along Main Road from Dinnington; very limited parking in the layby itself, no facilities.
- Best time
- Runway 07 departures. Good all day in winter; in summer backlit early morning and again from late afternoon.
- Lens
- 300 mm for the tower shot and for departures over the threshold.
Main Road footpath — north side of the 25 approach
A summer-evening alternative on the northern side of the approach, where the sun swings round behind you after 17:00. You can stand by the gate or cross the stile onto the public footpath — the view is much the same. It covers 25 arrivals and aircraft climbing out of 07.
- Getting there
- No parking at the spot: leave the car in Dinnington or at the Havannah Nature Reserve and walk 10–15 minutes. Do not park in the crash gate area opposite.
- Best time
- Summer evenings from about 17:00 only; the rest of the year the southern spots are better.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm.
Callerton farm track (runway 07 arrivals)
A turning circle at the end of a public footpath and farm track west of the airport, giving side-on views of every 07 arrival. It is the easiest spot to reach by public transport.
- Getting there
- Tyne and Wear Metro Green line to Callerton Parkway, or park in the Metro car park (small fee on weekdays, free after 17:00 and on Sundays). Cross the motorway bridge, follow the road to a row of cottages on the right and take the farm track beside them. The parking at the bottom of the lane is for residents only — do not drive up.
- Best time
- Runway 07 arrivals. Fine all day in winter; summer late afternoons are backlit.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm.
Footpath under the 07 approach lights
Continue along the signposted public footpath from the Callerton track until you are in line with the approach lights. Arrivals on 07 pass overhead for belly shots, and 25 departures come straight at you.
- Getting there
- On foot from Callerton Parkway Metro, using the same car park. Nothing at all out here, so bring water.
- Best time
- Afternoons are better than mornings, and winter is better than summer because the bushes are lower.
- Lens
- 200–400 mm depending on type.

What you'll see
Jet2, Ryanair, TUI and Loganair all have crew bases here, and easyJet opened its own base in spring 2026, so summer brings a dense wave of 737s and A320s to the Mediterranean, Canaries and Turkey. The star turn is Emirates' daily 777-300ER from Dubai, landing around midday and leaving early afternoon. KLM and British Airways feed Amsterdam and London, Loganair adds Scottish and island turboprops, and TUI's longer charters bring occasional widebodies. RAF transports, tankers and fast jets use the airport for practice approaches, which is the best reason to keep an alert running. Winter is noticeably quieter.

FAQ
What's that plane over Newcastle?
Check Spotterra's live map: it shows every transponding aircraft over Tyneside in real time — callsign, type, registration and where it's heading. Free in the browser.
Can I spot at Newcastle without a car?
Yes. The Metro Green line stops at Callerton Parkway, a walk from the runway 07 spots, and a bus runs to Dinnington near the 25 end. The two ends are not well connected to each other, though.
When does the Emirates 777 arrive?
The daily Dubai flight usually lands around midday and departs in the early afternoon; exact times shift with the summer and winter schedules, so check before you go.
Do military aircraft really come to Newcastle?
Regularly, though unannounced — RAF crews use EGNT for practice approaches and go-arounds. Set a military alert in Spotterra rather than relying on luck.
