Planespotting RAF Mildenhall — EGUN
RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk is a USAF base built around big aircraft rather than fast jets. The 100th Air Refueling Wing flies the KC-135 Stratotanker, Europe's only permanent American tanker wing, and the base also hosts special-operations MC-130J Commando IIs and CV-22B Ospreys plus RC-135 reconnaissance jets. On top of that come C-17s, C-5s, civil airliners on military charter and US Navy visitors, so the logbook here is more varied than at neighbouring Lakenheath. The single runway 11/29 runs roughly east-west between Mildenhall town at the eastern end and the village of West Row to the west. The real asset is John's Field, a small campsite by the 11 threshold where a raised platform lets you see over the fence. Most flying happens on weekdays, but weekends are not entirely dead. John's Field (The Nook Campsite), West Row
The best-known viewpoint at Mildenhall: a small campsite beside the western end of the runway where the owner provides a raised platform to see over the fence. From it you cover aircraft entering runway 11 from the taxiway, landings, departures and taxiing. Relaxed, with toilets on site.
- Getting there
- Drive to West Row, take Jarman's Lane and Pollards Lane, then the narrow lane straight on; the entrance is flanked by two green sheds. Day visitors pay a small charge into the honesty box with their car registration. The campsite operates seasonally (roughly April–October) — check before going.
- Best time
- All runway directions. Sun is with you from mid-morning onward; it only becomes a problem for 11 arrivals late in the day.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm zoom covers nearly everything.
Pollards Lane crash gate
A little further along the lane past John's Field, the road opens out and ends at a crash gate with views through and over the fence onto the runway end and nearby hardstandings. Walking the field edge lets you reach the fence for other angles on parked aircraft.
- Getting there
- Park where the lane opens out with no trees either side; do not block the lane or park near the houses at the end. Space at the gate is limited.
- Best time
- Mid-morning to late afternoon, either runway direction.

- 100–400 mm; a tall ladder for shots over the fence.
Hampstead Avenue and the mound (runway 29 approach)
On the eastern side, open-access land around the approach lights gives easy shots of aircraft on final to 29. A worn path through the scrub leads to a mound by the fence with a panoramic view of the runway end — the best place for side-on landings on 29 and long-lens shots of heavy tankers departing on 11.
- Getting there
- From Mildenhall town centre take Hampstead Avenue, where there is plenty of street parking, then walk back to the main road and cross to the approach lights. Space under the trees by the road is very limited. Watch for rabbit holes on the scrub path.
- Best time
- Westerly operations (29 landings). Sun is behind you on the mound for most of the day; heat haze spoils long departure shots in summer.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm; 500 mm+ for departures.
Folly Road crash gate
At the end of Folly Road, west of Hampstead Avenue, a crash gate sits close to tankers parked on the loops off the southern taxiway. Good for parked and taxiing aircraft; trees and buildings limit views of the runway itself.
- Getting there
- Drive west along Hampstead Avenue and turn right into Folly Road, then go to the end and park off to the side well away from the gate. Base security has occasionally been nervous about people lingering here.
- Best time
- South side of the airfield, so the sun is behind you most of the day.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm; ladder or shoot through the chain-link.

What you'll see
Daily traffic is dominated by based KC-135R Stratotankers and MC-130J Commando IIs, with CV-22B Ospreys hovering in the circuit and RC-135 Rivet Joint reconnaissance jets coming and going. Visiting C-17 Globemasters and C-5 Galaxies, civil charters carrying troops, C-12 and UC-35 liaison aircraft and US Navy types add variety, and foreign air forces turn up now and then. Activity peaks during deployments and exercises, and transatlantic fighter moves bring extra tanker work. Security was raised at the US bases in autumn 2026.
