Planespotting Taipei — RCTP

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport · RCTP / TPE

P1Long-haul hub

Taoyuan is Taiwan's international gateway, 30 km west of Taipei, and home to two of Asia's most photogenic fleets: EVA Air and China Airlines, both flying 777-300ERs, A350s, 787s and large freighter fleets. Two parallel runways, 05L/23R and 05R/23L, run southwest–northeast. Until 11:30 each airline uses the runway nearest its terminal for everything; 05L/23R then closes for half an hour of daily maintenance, and in the afternoon the north runway takes arrivals while the south runway handles departures. The northeast monsoon makes 05 operations common from autumn to spring, while summer southwesterlies favour 23. Taiwan is genuinely spotter-friendly: since 2019 two free rooftop decks on Terminal 2 have turned the airport into a family day out, and the roads around the fishponds and villages south of the field offer approach shots. Terminal 3 is being phased in, so construction keeps reshaping some roadside locations.

Where to spot

Terminal 2 South Observation Deck

A free two-level rooftop deck above the C gates. The upper level gives panning views of everything on 05R/23L, the lower level is close enough for taxi shots along the south side of Terminal 2. The wire fence has wide gaps, so even big lenses shoot through cleanly.

Getting there
Taoyuan Airport MRT to Airport Terminal 2 station, then up to the 3F departures hall (south side) and take the escalator or lift to 5F near the convenience store. No security check. Opening hours have been 06:30–22:30 with a 300-person cap — check current hours before you go, it closed for a long period during COVID.
Best time
From about 15:00 to sunset, when the sun swings behind you. Mornings are backlit.
Lens
150–400 mm for the runway, 70–200 mm for the taxiway below.

Terminal 2 North Observation Deck

The smaller twin of the south deck, facing northwest over the Terminal 2 D apron and the middle of 05L/23R. Lighting works for most of the day here, and taxiway NC is clear of obstructions — the best place at Taoyuan for clean ground shots of China Airlines and JAL.

Getting there
Terminal 2, north check-in hall on 3F, then follow the signs to the North Mall and Observation Deck on 5F. Free, limited to 100 people at a time and enforced by guards; weekends fill up.
Best time
Morning to mid-afternoon; the sun moves into the frame after about 15:00.
Lens
125–350 mm for the runway, 60–100 mm for widebodies on taxiway NP.

Hangxiang Road bridge at Sanmin Road

A road bridge south of the airport where aircraft on final for 23L cross in front of you. It is a quick, simple roadside stand with a convenience store on the corner, and it is the main afternoon location when 23L takes arrivals.

Getting there
Best by car or scooter — park at the roadside (parking is not officially allowed, keep it short). YouBike from Dayuan MRT station is an alternative.
Best time
Southwesterly operations (23L arrivals), afternoon to sunset.
Lens
Around 400 mm for an A320, less for widebodies.

Bakery balcony on Sanmin Road (23R approach)

A bakery on Sanmin Road with a rooftop balcony open to customers, under the approach to 23R. It gives a slightly elevated, comfortable stand with drinks and a toilet — a rarity among Taoyuan's roadside spots.

Getting there
Sanmin Road, Dayuan District, with a bus stop and parking nearby; YouBike recommended. Buy something and ask before heading upstairs.
Best time
23R arrivals from sunrise to around noon (into mid-afternoon in winter).
Lens
About 150–300 mm; a 777-300ER is roughly 150 mm.

Rural road by the EVA Air hangars

A quiet farm road next to the EVA Air maintenance base, aligned with arrivals on 05R. Close, side-on shots of EVA and China Airlines widebodies when the northeast monsoon puts traffic onto 05.

Getting there
Car recommended (off Route 110). Otherwise Dayuan MRT station, YouBike and about 1 km of cycling; the Hai Feng bus stop is nearby but buses are infrequent. Nothing on site — bring water.
Best time
05R arrivals, from about 13:00 to 17:00.
Lens
100–200 mm; a 777 is around 100 mm.

Hyatt Regency Taoyuan International Airport

The hotel next to the terminals has airport-facing rooms overlooking taxiways W1 and W2 and aircraft vacating 23L and 23R. A comfortable base for a multi-day trip, with a sealed but usable window.

Getting there
Walking distance from the terminals; request an airport-facing room when booking.
Best time
Afternoon to sunset.
Lens
50–200 mm; watch for window reflections.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

EVA Air and China Airlines run the show — 777-300ER, A350-900/1000, 787-9/10, A321neo, plus 777F freighters from both, and EVA's Hello Kitty and themed liveries are a regular hunt. Starlux adds A350s and A330neos, Tigerair Taiwan the A320neo family. Overseas: Cathay, Singapore and Scoot, Korean, ANA, JAL, Peach, Thai, Vietnamese carriers, Emirates and transpacific United and Delta. Cargolux, FedEx, UPS and Atlas keep the cargo apron busy. December to March is driest; June to November brings afternoon storms and typhoons.

FAQ

What's that plane over Taipei?

Check Spotterra's live map: every aircraft around Taoyuan and Songshan shows up in real time with type, registration and route. It is free, runs in your browser and makes it easy to tell an EVA special livery coming in from a regular 777.

Are the Taoyuan observation decks free?

Yes. Both Terminal 2 decks are landside with no security check and free entry. They have capacity limits (about 300 south, 100 north) and fixed opening hours, so check before you go and arrive early on weekends.

Why does the runway use change at midday?

Runway 05L/23R closes daily from 11:30 to 12:00 for maintenance. Before that each runway handles both arrivals and departures; afterwards the north runway is mainly for landings and the south runway for take-offs, which decides where you stand in the afternoon.

Is Songshan worth a visit too?

Yes — Taipei Songshan (RCSS) is in the city and the approach lane off Binjiang Road is one of the busiest spotter hangouts in Taiwan, with domestic ATRs and regional jets to Japan and Korea.
