Planespotting Bratislava — LZIB
Bratislava is one of the few airports in the region that actively helps spotters. Local enthusiasts from Airliners.sk worked with the airport to fit around 25 camera holes into the perimeter fence in 2017, and in 2018 an official raised platform with steps and a bench opened next to runway 31 — free and open around the clock. The airport has two crossing runways: 13/31 (3,190 m, CAT IIIA, the main runway) and 04/22 (2,900 m). With the Danube lowland's frequent north-westerly wind, arrivals on 31 from the south-east are the everyday pattern, which is exactly where the platform sits. Traffic is mostly low-cost and charter narrowbodies, but there is more going on behind the scenes than the timetable suggests: Austrian Technik's maintenance base, a paint bay where aircraft emerge in new colours, the Slovak Government Flying Service and a steady flow of business jets through the GA terminal.

Official spotter platform at runway 31 (Vrakuňa side)
A purpose-built raised platform, about 1.5 m high, that lifts an adult clear of the fence near the runway 31 threshold. Arrivals on 31 pass low in front of you and you can follow them all the way to touchdown. It is the obvious first stop and works with kids, too.
- Getting there
- From the Vrakuňa borough on the airport's south-west side; the airport publishes a map of the location on bts.aero. City buses serve Vrakuňa — check the current route on the IDS BK journey planner. Open 24/7.
- Best time
- North-westerly operations (landings on 31), which is most of the year. Afternoon to evening puts the sun behind you on this south-west side of the runway.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm covers most arrivals; 100–400 mm for aircraft further out on final.
Camera holes along the perimeter fence
Around 25 lens-sized openings spread around the whole perimeter, installed so you can shoot through the fence without a ladder. Pick the hole that matches the active runway and the sun — some give side-on runway shots, others look onto taxiways and aprons.
- Getting there
- The positions were published on a map by Airliners.sk; walk or cycle to them along public roads and field tracks. Do not drive onto airport service roads, and park only where it is legal.
- Best time
- Depends on the hole; as a rule, holes on the south-west side of 13/31 have the sun behind them in the afternoon, the north-east side in the morning.
- Lens
- Lenses up to about 300 mm fit most holes; a lens hood that fits the opening helps.
Zlaté Piesky end — approach 13 and departures from 31
The north-western end of the main runway lies near the Zlaté Piesky lake and leisure area. Departures off 31 climb out over this side and, on the less common south-easterly days, arrivals on 13 come in over it. A good option when the platform end is backlit or quiet.
- Getting there
- Tram or bus to Zlaté Piesky, then on foot along public paths towards the airport side. Stay outside the fence and away from the road junctions.
- Best time
- Departures from 31 in the morning; arrivals on 13 when the wind turns south-east.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm.
Terminal and General Aviation Terminal area
From the landside around the terminal you get a view onto the apron where Ryanair and Smartwings turn around, plus the GA terminal used by business jets and VIP flights. Good for logging registrations and checking what's parked at the maintenance hangars.
- Getting there
- City bus 61 from the main railway station (night bus N61), or by car — P1 is free for 15 minutes, P2 is paid.
- Best time
- Morning and late afternoon; at midday the light across the apron is harsh.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm.

What you'll see
Ryanair has a base here and runs the bulk of scheduled flights, alongside Wizz Air and seasonal leisure routes. Charter carriers dominate summer weekends — Slovak-based AirExplore and Smartwings Slovakia with 737s, plus foreign charter operators to Egypt, Turkey and the Mediterranean. The more interesting tails turn up because of the hangars: Austrian Technik Bratislava and East Air maintain narrowbodies for other airlines, and the Air Livery paint bay sends aircraft out in fresh colours. The Slovak Government Flying Service is based at the airport, and Bratislava's proximity to Vienna brings a steady stream of business jets and the occasional diversion or VIP movement.

FAQ
What's that plane over Bratislava?
Check the Spotterra live map — every ADS-B-equipped aircraft over Bratislava and the Danube region in real time, with type, registration and route. It's free and runs in the browser.
Is there an official spotting area at Bratislava airport?
Yes — a raised platform by runway 31 on the Vrakuňa side, open 24/7, plus about 25 camera holes around the fence. Facilities change, so check the airport's website before a long trip.
Which runway does Bratislava use most?
Usually 31, with arrivals from the south-east, because the prevailing wind is north-westerly. Runway 04/22 is used less. Spotterra predicts the active runway from the current METAR.
Can I combine Bratislava and Vienna in one day?
Easily — the two airports are around 50 km apart with frequent buses between them. Bratislava is quieter but far easier to shoot; Vienna brings the long-haul traffic.
