Balice has a single runway — the 2,550-metre concrete 07/25 — and that simplifies planning a trip more than it sounds: all you need to know is which way the wind blows. With a westerly the aircraft land on 25 and come down over the hill east of the terminal, right by the A4 motorway; in the opposite configuration the traffic moves to the other side of the field. Krakow's real asset is the terminal observation deck: glazed, covered, free and open around the clock, so spotting here does not end when the weather turns. Terminal observation deck (level +2)
One of the best decks in Poland and the reason Balice is a good airport for a first attempt: glazed, covered, with seating and a snack machine. In summer roughly 600 people a day come through. You get departures, arrivals and apron movement — through glass, so reflections need managing.

- Passenger terminal, level +2. Admission is free, no boarding pass needed, and it is open around the clock.
- Best time
- Any time — the deck is covered, so rain and wind do not end the trip. The airport has announced a refurbishment of the deck, so check krakowairport.pl before travelling a long way.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm for the apron, 100–400 mm for the far end of the runway. A rubber lens hood against the glass makes the biggest difference here.
The hill east of the terminal, by the A4
The most visited spot among Krakow spotters — a low rise on the runway centreline where, with a westerly wind, you photograph aircraft on approach to runway 25. It is not an observation tower: no ticket office, no railings, no roof, no tourist infrastructure at all.
- Getting there
- East of the terminal, close to the A4 motorway. By car or bike; park so that you do not block the access roads.
- Best time
- When arrivals use runway 25, i.e. with a westerly wind. Check the active direction before you set off — Spotterra predicts it from the live METAR.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm. The aircraft are on final, so the frame is tight and a wide angle is no use.
The footbridge by the ul. Krakowska car park
A popular point right next to the airport: the bridge gives you a few metres of height, and that is enough for the fence to stop being a problem. A good place to start if you would rather not stray far from the terminal and the car parks.

- Off ul. Krakowska, near the airport car parks. On foot from the terminal or by car to the car park.
- Best time
- Works in both configurations — you see taxiing and part of the operation, though finals look better from the hill.

The north side, beyond the motorway
Spotters turn up regularly on the north side, beyond the motorway, by the billboard east of the Aleksandrowice bus stop. A different side of the field means different light and a different background — useful when everything from the hill is backlit.
- Getting there
- Around the Aleksandrowice bus stop, to the east of it, beyond the motorway. By suburban bus or car; never cross the motorway carriageway and stay on public roads.
- Best time
- When the eastern hill puts you into the sun. A step ladder or platform is worth bringing.

Morawica — Witek Logistyka, Lindab and the U Jędrusia bar
Further from the airport but under the traffic path: aircraft are watched from the access road to the Witek Logistyka and Lindab works, and around the U Jędrusia bar. Fewer people, more room and a chance at a frame with landscape in it rather than fence.
- Getting there
- Morawica near Krakow, the access road to the works. By car; park so that you do not obstruct works traffic.
- Best time
- For aircraft still high on approach or just after departure — this is a spot for a silhouette in a scene, not a portrait.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm and longer.

Krakow is first of all tourist traffic: Ryanair and Wizz Air in 737s and A320-family Airbuses all day, plus LOT, charters and pronounced seasonal peaks. The military is a layer of its own — the 8th Air Transport Base, part of the 3rd Air Transport Wing, flies CASA C-295M transports and smaller PZL M28 Bryzas from here; the rebuilt PPS 3 apron holds nine C-295M stands.
