Planespotting Vienna — LOWW
Vienna Schwechat is the largest airport in the region and the only one between Munich and Warsaw with a full long-haul hub. Two long runways cross east of the city: 11/29 (3,500 m) and 16/34 (3,600 m), the latter running over the rail tunnel that brings the S7 and the City Airport Train into the terminal. Which runways are in use depends on the wind and on Vienna's noise rules, so the same spot can be perfect one day and useless the next — check the active configuration before you set off. The planned third runway is off the table: the airport dropped the project in late 2025. Austrian Airlines runs its hub here with 777s, 787s and A320s, and the long-haul mix around it — Gulf carriers, East Asian airlines, North American routes — is the widest in Central Europe. One practical change for 2026: the official visitor terrace on Terminal 3 is closed during the southern expansion works, so outdoor spots and the airport's apron bus tour are the way to see the action.

Besucherwelt apron bus tour
While the terrace is closed, the airport's own visitor centre runs bus tours across the apron, getting you close to Austrian's widebodies and to take-offs and landings. Not a place for long sessions with a tripod, but the closest legal look at the airfield, and the multimedia exhibition afterwards suits families.
- Getting there
- Besucherwelt Terminal at the airport; S7 or CAT to Flughafen Wien. Open Wednesday to Sunday including holidays, 08:30–18:00, closed Monday and Tuesday. Book online, arrive 30 minutes early — a security check is required.
- Best time
- Weekend tours for the most varied traffic; the mid-day long-haul departure bank is a highlight.
- Lens
- 24–105 mm; you shoot through bus windows or during short stops.
Fields east of the airport towards Fischamend — arrivals on 29
With westerly wind, arrivals on 29 come in from the east over the flat farmland between the airport and Fischamend. Long finals over open country give room for both tight portraits of widebodies and wider shots with the landscape.
- Getting there
- By car to the Fischamend area and then public field roads; park legally and never on the motorway or its hard shoulder. The S7 stops at Fischamend if you're happy to walk.
- Best time
- Westerly operations (landings on 29). Stand south of the approach path: from late morning to evening the sun is behind you.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm.
Fields south of the airport — arrivals on 34
Runway 34 takes arrivals from the south over open fields when the wind and noise rules favour it. Fewer people shoot here than at the 29 approach, so it's a good second option on busy westerly days.
- Getting there
- By car via minor public roads south of the airport; walk the last part on public field tracks. Respect crops and farm traffic.
- Best time
- When 34 is used for landings. The approach comes from the south, so midday is backlit; morning from the east side of the approach, evening from the west side.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm.

What you'll see
Austrian Airlines dominates with A320-family jets, Embraers and its 777 and 787 long-haul fleet to North America and Asia. Around it: Emirates and Qatar from the Gulf, ANA and EVA Air from Asia, Korean Air, Air India, Air China, El Al, Turkish, and a dense European network with Lufthansa Group, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Eurowings. The winter 2025/26 schedule was the biggest the airport has run, with 21 long-haul routes added. Vienna's cargo centre sees regular freighters, and the city's role as a UN and OPEC seat brings a steady flow of government and business jets to the General Aviation Center. Spring to autumn is the busiest period, but the long-haul banks run all year.

FAQ
What's that plane over Vienna?
Open the Spotterra live map — every ADS-B-equipped aircraft over Vienna in real time, with type, registration and route. Free, in the browser, no install.
Is the Vienna Airport visitor terrace open?
Not at the moment: the airport has closed the Terminal 3 visitor terrace during the southern expansion construction. The Besucherwelt apron tours still run Wednesday to Sunday.
Which runway is in use at Vienna?
It depends on wind and noise rules, with two crossing runways (11/29 and 16/34) used in different combinations. Spotterra predicts the active configuration from the METAR so you know which approach to head for.
Can I combine Vienna and Bratislava in one trip?
Yes — Bratislava airport is about 50 km away with frequent buses. Vienna gives you the long-haul variety, Bratislava an official spotter platform.
