Planespotting Hamburg Finkenwerder — EDHI
Finkenwerder is not an airport you fly from — it is the Airbus plant on the south bank of the Elbe, and its single runway 05/23 (3,273 m) exists for test flights, customer deliveries and the Beluga shuttles that carry fuselage sections between Airbus sites. Hamburg runs several final assembly lines for the A320neo family, so on a good weekday you can photograph A321neos and A321XLRs in liveries from Asia, Latin America or the Gulf that may never be seen in Europe again once delivered. Nothing is scheduled publicly: some days bring a handful of highlights before lunch, others leave you waiting for hours. Sundays are effectively dead and Saturdays thin. Runway 23 is used most because of the prevailing south-westerlies, and Finkenwerder normally runs the same direction as Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel to keep the traffic flows apart. The official Visitor Hill sits mid-field on the south side, which puts the runway in good light from morning until early afternoon.

Airbus Visitor Hill (Besucherhügel) on Neßdeich
The official viewing mound halfway down the runway and the base where local spotters wait for movements. You get landings in both directions, the 23 arrivals backtracking or taxiing to the Delivery Center right in front of you, and A320-family jets on the taxiway to the 05 threshold. Departures on 23 are usually too high by the time they pass.
- Getting there
- Free car park for about 40 cars right next to the hill on Neßdeich. Bus 150 from Hamburg-Altona to 'Am Rosengarten', or bus 146 from S-Bahn Harburg to 'Airbus' and change to the 150. The hill has stairs and a ramp. No toilets or food on site — bring supplies.
- Best time
- Runway shots from about 08:00 to 14:00 with the sun from the south-east and south. The Delivery Center taxiway works better from early afternoon. Weekdays, traffic rarely starts before 09:00.
- Lens
- 100–170 mm for an A320 on the runway, 100–150 mm on the taxiways, up to 300 mm for rotations on 05.
Neuenfelder Damm dyke at the West Gate
The evening alternative at the Airbus employees' west gate. From the dyke across the road you get 05 arrivals over the fence, 05 departures and the 23 arrivals swinging round on the runway end to backtrack — useful when the sun has moved off the runway at the Visitor Hill.
- Getting there
- Drive round the 05 end from the Visitor Hill and take the first right; small paved pull-in by the fence. Bus 150 stop 'Neuenfelder Damm'. You are in full view of gate security — keep a low profile and stay off the fence line.
- Best time
- A summer spot: 23 arrivals from roughly 15:30, 05 traffic best after 18:00. Between October and March the sun does not get round far enough.
- Lens
- About 120 mm for an A320 from the dyke; a ladder is only needed if you shoot from the fence itself.
Am Rosengarten noise-barrier dyke
A newer earth dyke with a footpath on top along Am Rosengarten, looking over the road and fence towards the 05 end. Aircraft lining up or turning at the end of the runway — which most do even when 23 is active — pass close and side-on.
- Getting there
- Walk up from Am Rosengarten (bus 150 stop of the same name). Park in the village to the south rather than on the verge. No shops nearby; the closest are in Neuenfelde or central Finkenwerder.
- Best time
- Arrivals on 05 from 08:00 to 14:00 at the north-east end of the dyke; turning aircraft at the runway end until about 17:00.
- Lens
- 90–120 mm for an A320, 80–110 mm for an A321.
Rüschpark tower on the Elbe shore
A small red lookout tower at the western tip of the Rüschpark peninsula, under the approach to runway 23. From the upper levels you can follow aircraft on short final and see departures turning on the runway end.
- Getting there
- HADAG ferry 64 to 'Rüschpark', then walk west along the shore path. By car, there are a few bays in a turning area roughly 200 m east of the tower. The tower may be shut in storms — check before relying on it.
- Best time
- 23 arrivals, from morning until about 14:00.
- Lens
- 70–130 mm.
Jenischpark (Teufelsbrück), north bank
The one spot on the city side of the Elbe: 23 arrivals cross the river and pass over the meadow in front of the park's south gate. Handy if you are staying in Hamburg or combining Finkenwerder with Fuhlsbüttel, because you avoid the trip round to the south bank.
- Getting there
- Bus 286 from U/S-Bahn Othmarschen to 'Teufelsbrück', or ferry 64 to Teufelsbrück pier; walk a few minutes east along Elbchaussee to the park gate. Car park at the north end of the park (Hochrad).
- Best time
- Runway 23 arrivals only, morning until about 14:00. Watch for returning test flights before you wander off.
- Lens
- About 160 mm for an A320.

What you'll see
Almost everything is A320neo family: A320neos, A321neos and increasingly A321XLRs on acceptance and test flights, then delivery flights to customers worldwide — often in liveries that rarely reach Europe. Test aircraft carry temporary German D-A… registrations before switching to their final marks. Beluga ST (A300-600ST) and BelugaXL (A330-based) shuttles bring in fuselage and tail sections several times a week, mostly Monday to Saturday. Larger Airbus widebodies appear for cabin work or visits, and there is a small amount of corporate and light aircraft traffic. Expect quiet spells during German school holidays and around Christmas.

What's that plane over Hamburg Finkenwerder?

Is there a timetable for test and delivery flights?
No. Airbus does not publish one, so you cannot plan around a specific aircraft. Weekdays from mid-morning are the best bet; a Spotterra alert on the Finkenwerder area tells you when something is airborne.
Can I photograph from the fence?
Stay at least a short step back. Spotter guides report sensors along the perimeter fence that alert security if a lens is held over it. The Visitor Hill and the dykes give clear views without touching the fence.

Guided tours are run by an external operator and must be booked well in advance with personal details. Cameras are not allowed on the tour.
