Planespotting Luxembourg — ELLX
Luxembourg's single airport punches far above the country's size, because it is the home of Cargolux, one of the world's biggest all-cargo airlines and among the largest operators of the Boeing 747-8F. Jumbo freighters move here every day, joined by visiting cargo carriers and the varied fleet of Luxair, the national airline. Findel has one long runway, 06/24, about 4 km in length, with the passenger terminals on the north side and the Cargo Center and Cargolux maintenance base to the east. Westerly winds mean runway 24 is in use most of the time, with arrivals coming in from the east over the A1 motorway. The airport has installed photo holes in the fence at many spots, so a ladder is rarely needed — and if you do use one, airport security asks you to keep 3 m from the fence. Public transport in Luxembourg is free, which makes the bus a real option for several spots.

Schëtterhaard forest — runway 24 arrivals
In the woods south of the eastern end of the runway, a row of photo holes in the fence looks onto 24 arrivals, line-ups and freighters taxiing into the Cargo Center. Walk back towards the road for sky shots of the 747s on final.
- Getting there
- Bus 361 from the terminal to 'Cargocenter', then about 10 minutes on foot along the Rue de Senningen and the fence. By car, A1 exit 10 (Cargo Center), then the Rue de Senningen to a forest parking bay; road works have restricted car access at times. No facilities.
- Best time
- Westerly operations, from sunrise until early afternoon. Heat haze over the runway in summer.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm (a 747-8F on short final is about 80 mm).
Birelerhaff — fence south of the runway
At the end of the lane through the hamlet of Birelerhaff, the fence on the south side faces the middle of the runway. You get departures in both directions — heavies on 06 are often still on the ground here — and arrivals rolling out.
- Getting there
- Bus 411 to 'Sandweiler, Hiel', then north along the Rue Belle-Vue. By car via Sandweiler and the CR185; park by the houses down the road and walk five minutes, as the farmer objects to cars at the foot of the hill.
- Best time
- Sunrise to midday, both runway directions. Long grass in summer can cut off landing gear.
- Lens
- 50–300 mm.
Cargolux maintenance crash gate
Next to the Cargolux hangar, this gate gives the best view of parked Cargolux 747s on the maintenance apron, plus 06 landings and departures and heavy departures on 24.
- Getting there
- Bus 411 to 'Sandweiler, Hiel', then along the Rue de la Chapelle to the crash gate. By car, park near the gate without blocking it — the access road is restricted, so keep it short. Photo holes exist, but a ladder (3 m from the fence) gives a wider view.
- Best time
- Parked aircraft from sunrise to about 15:00; 06 movements in the morning, 24 departures from noon to 15:00.
- Lens
- 90–300 mm.
Terminal viewing platform (by the Skypark)
A public open-air platform between the terminal and the new Skypark building, at the midpoint of the runway. Its glass barrier is only about 1.2 m high, so you can shoot taxiing traffic, 24 and 06 departures and the Terminal B apron without a ladder.
- Getting there
- Outside the terminal, landside, a minute from the bus stops; bus and tram from Luxembourg City. Food and toilets in the terminal.
- Best time
- From afternoon to last light in summer; for most of the day you look into the sun across the runway.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm.
Luxembourg American Cemetery (Hamm)
West of the airport, the car park and grounds of the American military cemetery see heavy departures off runway 24 climbing out. Lighter aircraft are already too high, so this is a spot for 747s and widebodies.
- Getting there
- Val du Scheid, Hamm, with its own car park and visitor toilets. This is a war memorial — tell the security guard at the entrance why you are there, behave respectfully and stay out of the grave areas if asked.
- Best time
- Departures on 24, sunrise to early afternoon.
- Lens
- 200–400 mm.
Rue de Trèves car park — photo holes
Behind a hedge in the far left corner of the large car park off the Rue de Trèves, four photo holes at two heights look onto runway 24 traffic and the taxiway — 747s on the taxiway fill the frame at wide angle.
- Getting there
- Use the address 6a Rue de Trèves rather than the map marker, which routes across airport ground. Some free spaces; avoid reserved bays such as police parking.
- Best time
- Afternoon to sunset in summer; long grass can intrude in midsummer.
- Lens
- 18–200 mm.

What you'll see
Cargolux dominates the heavy end: 747-8Fs and 747-400Fs leave for Asia, the Americas and the Middle East around the clock, and schedules are loose, so freighters often move outside their published times. Visiting cargo carriers such as Qatar Airways Cargo, China Airlines Cargo and Atlas Air add more 747s and 777Fs. Luxair runs Boeing 737s, Embraer E2s and Dash 8 Q400s across Europe, with summer holiday flights, and shuttles from Lufthansa, Air France, Swiss and others serve the EU institutions. Business jets, Luxembourg Air Rescue aircraft and occasional government flights complete the mix.

FAQ
What's that plane over Luxembourg?
Spotterra's live map shows every ADS-B aircraft over Luxembourg in real time with type, registration and route — useful for catching a Cargolux 747 whose departure time has slipped by hours.
Do I need a ladder at Findel?
Mostly not. The airport has installed photo holes at most fence spots. If you use a ladder, security asks you to stand at least 3 m from the fence.
Can I get to the spots by bus?
Yes, and public transport in Luxembourg is free. Bus 361 serves the Cargo Center, bus 411 the Sandweiler side; check the Mobiliteit app, as line numbers have changed in recent years.
When do the Cargolux 747s fly?
Throughout the day and night, without strong waves. Published times are unreliable for freighters, so watch the live map rather than the timetable.
