Planespotting Bremen — EDDW
Bremen Airport lies only about 3 km south of the city centre, with its own tram stop, and it punches well above its size for spotters. The reason is next door: Airbus builds wings and high-lift devices for its widebodies here, so the Beluga XL turns up almost every day to fly them to the assembly lines, and its timings are even shown in the airport's public flight schedule. The Alfred Wegener Institute bases its two polar research aircraft, ski-capable Basler BT-67 conversions of the DC-3, at Bremen, and the Lufthansa-owned flight school keeps trainers in the circuit on weekdays. The main runway is 09/27, about 2,040 m long and used in both directions depending on the wind; a short runway 23 sees only occasional light aircraft. Most fence spots sit south of the runway, giving good light for much of the day, especially in winter, and many need a ladder to clear the wire.

Visitor terrace (Besucherterrasse)
On the top floor of the terminal above security, the terrace overlooks the whole apron and every stand. Large aircraft — including the Beluga XL — park almost in front of you, with bizjets further out. It is glazed all round and the glass is often dirty.
- Getting there
- Tram line 6 to Flughafen, then the stairs to the left of security (or the lift on the left of the arrivals hall). Normally open long hours, but it closes for events and whenever it is below about 8 °C — check before you go; the information desk can sometimes open it.
- Best time
- Mornings until around noon.
- Lens
- 30–200 mm; longer for small aircraft at the far end.
Kohlhöfenweg (runway 27 approach)
A residential street under the runway 27 approach on the eastern side of the airport. Every 27 arrival passes overhead or just beside you; watch that rooftops don't creep into the frame.
- Getting there
- Bus 27 to Krimpelweg, or by car via Kattenturmer Heerstraße and Krimpelweg; park legally on the street. No facilities — keep it tidy, people live here.
- Best time
- Runway 27 arrivals. Good all day in winter; in summer the early morning and evening are backlit.
- Lens
- 50–200 mm.
Picnic area on the Ochtum dike
West of the airport, an asphalt dike path leads from a small free car park to a picnic area by the fence. From here you get runway 09 arrivals and 27 departures, plus 27 arrivals that roll to the end. No ladder needed.
- Getting there
- By car along Kladdinger Straße; turn onto the dike just after the small bridge (the turn from the other direction has poor visibility — cross the bridge and turn back). Or tram 1 or 8 to Norderländer Straße and walk the riverside path, about 30–40 minutes.
- Best time
- Runway 09 arrivals and 27 departures. Good all day in winter; summer early mornings and evenings are backlit. Heat haze on ground shots.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm, up to 400 mm for runway shots.
Fence by the runway 09 threshold
Further along the same dike path, standing at the fence gives you 09 line-ups and arrivals as well as departures in both directions; 27 departures are quite high by the time they reach you.
- Getting there
- Same parking or tram route as the picnic area. A ladder of at least three or four steps is needed to clear the wire; stay a few metres back from the fence when not shooting, as security asks.
- Best time
- Either direction. All day in winter, backlit summer mornings and evenings.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm, up to 400 mm.
Meadow under the 09 approach
An open meadow beyond the threshold where you can stand freely under the runway 09 approach. With a ladder at the fence you can also catch aircraft backtracking.
- Getting there
- Walk on from the dike car park off Kladdinger Straße. Nothing out here, and watch where you step — dog walkers use it.
- Best time
- Runway 09 arrivals from morning to mid-afternoon; all day in winter.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm.
Atlas Air Service apron (Hanna-Kunath-Straße)
In the north-west of the airport the bizjet maintenance company Atlas Air Service has its hangar and apron, which you can see from the fences on either side. Parked and maintenance business jets of many types are the attraction.
- Getting there
- Drive along Hanna-Kunath-Straße and choose before or after the hangar which side to stand. Use only non-reserved parking bays, keep a low profile and use a ladder only while shooting.
- Best time
- Most of the day depending on where aircraft are parked; around noon is usually best.
- Lens
- 18–200 mm.

What you'll see
The Airbus Beluga XL (A330-743L) is the headline act, shuttling wing components to Airbus final assembly almost daily, and the AWI's Basler BT-67s Polar 5 and Polar 6 fly test sorties between polar seasons. Scheduled traffic is a mix of hub feeders — Lufthansa to Frankfurt and Munich, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Swiss and Austrian — with Eurowings, Ryanair and Wizz Air in the low-cost terminal, and SunExpress, Pegasus, Corendon and other charter operators for Turkey and the Mediterranean in summer. Flight school trainers, bizjets visiting Atlas Air Service and occasional Bundeswehr or NATO training flights round out the day.

FAQ
What's that plane over Bremen?
Spotterra's live map shows all aircraft over Bremen and the Weser in real time — type, registration, route — so you can see whether that huge white bubble on approach really is the Beluga XL.
When does the Beluga XL come to Bremen?
Most days. The airport lists Beluga flights in its public schedule, and the aircraft usually appears on tracking sites by the morning. A Spotterra alert for the type takes the guesswork out.
Is the Bremen visitor terrace open?
Usually, with long opening hours, but it closes for events and in cold weather below about 8 °C. Check with the airport on the day.
Can I spot at Bremen without a car?
Yes. Tram 6 goes to the terminal, bus 27 serves the runway 27 approach and trams 1 and 8 get you within walking distance of the western 09 spots.
