Dresden Airport in Klotzsche, 9 km north of the city, is a small airport with an outsized surprise. The passenger schedule is thin — a few hub links and summer holiday flights — but Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW), the Airbus and ST Engineering joint venture based here, converts A330s into freighters and has returned to A380 maintenance, so widebodies in fresh or unusual liveries regularly appear on the apron or on test flights. The terminal itself is a converted aircraft assembly hall from the East German aviation industry of the 1950s. There is one runway, 04/22, 2,850 m long; prevailing winds mean runway 22 is used most of the time, with arrivals coming in over Weixdorf from the north-east. Apart from the indoor observation deck, which is reachable by S-Bahn, most fence spots need a car and several need a three-step ladder.

Where to spot

Terminal observation deck

On the third level of the terminal, up the escalators behind check-in. It looks over the apron, the taxiway and both runway directions, but you are behind glass. The easiest way to log what EFW has parked on the apron.

Getting there
S-Bahn S2 from Dresden Hauptbahnhof or Dresden-Neustadt to Dresden Flughafen, underneath the terminal. Spotter guides describe it as open around the clock — check before an early or late visit. Facilities in the terminal.
Best time
Sunrise to about 14:30, before the sun moves round in front of you.
Lens
18–300 mm.

Car park P4 (long-term)

The best spot for runway 22 take-offs, with 04 landings possible too, though heat haze is a problem at that distance. You can also see the general aviation ramp through the fence. Local spotters report no trouble with police or security here.

Getting there
Bus 77 to Dresden Flughafen West and a five-minute walk, or about 12 minutes on foot from the terminal. Paid parking at P4 if you drive. Nothing at the spot itself.
Best time
Runway 22 departures, sunrise to about 14:30; backlit on summer evenings.
Lens
Around 200 mm for an A320 or 737 departure.

Hermann-Reichelt-Straße (runway 04 approach, morning)

A small wooded area beside the pavement of Hermann-Reichelt-Straße, right under the runway 04 approach. No ladder needed — arrivals cross above the trees.

Getting there
Drive from the terminal towards the motorway junction, turn back and park in the next small driveway on the right, then walk about 300 m. Facilities only at the terminal.
Best time
Runway 04 arrivals from sunrise to about 14:30; backlit on summer evenings.
Lens
150–400 mm.

Schelsberg perimeter fence (runway 22 line-up)

On the Weixdorf side, the roads around Schelsberg lead to the fence by the runway 22 threshold. Depending on where you stand you can shoot 22 line-ups, taxiing aircraft and arrivals — one approach works in the morning, the other side of the field in the evening.

Getting there
By car via Grenzstraße towards Weixdorf, then to Schelsberg and down to the fence; park at the fence and walk along it. A ladder is needed. Supermarket and petrol station in Weixdorf.
Best time
Morning side: sunrise to about 15:30; evening side: from about 15:30 to sunset.
Lens
80–250 mm.

Zum Windkanal (taxiway H)

At the end of the road Zum Windkanal, a fence looks onto taxiway H, which aircraft use to and from the EFW area. An A380 here fills the frame at around 80 mm.

Getting there
From the terminal drive north-east on Grenzstraße, left into Zum Kraftwerk, left on Zur Wetterwarte, then the next right to the end — the last stretch is one-way. Shoot through the fence; nothing nearby.
Best time
Morning until about 14:30.
Lens
80–300 mm.

Terminal multi-storey car park

From the north side of the top deck you overlook the northern part of apron 1, with pushbacks close enough for medium lenses and runway 22 movements in the distance.

Getting there
Linked to the terminal by a covered footbridge; paid parking.
Best time
All day, depending on where aircraft are parked.
Lens
50–400 mm; an E175 pushback is about 160 mm.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

Passenger flights are modest: Lufthansa links to its hubs (check the current schedule, as Lufthansa announced cuts on Frankfurt flights in 2026), Swiss flies to Zurich and Eurowings to Düsseldorf, while SkyAlps adds a Bolzano link. In summer the based Sundair A320s and charters by Corendon, SunExpress, Pegasus and Air Cairo fly to Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Egypt and Mallorca. The real interest is EFW: A330 passenger jets arriving for freighter conversion and leaving as A330P2Fs, and A380s visiting for heavy maintenance. Business jets, light aircraft and occasional military helicopters complete the mix.

FAQ

What's that plane over Dresden?

Spotterra's live map shows every aircraft over Dresden and the Elbe valley in real time, with type, registration and route. It's the quickest way to check whether that widebody heading for Klotzsche is an EFW conversion.

Why do A330s and A380s come to Dresden?

Elbe Flugzeugwerke, based at the airport, converts A330s into freighters and maintains A380s. These movements are unscheduled, so a Spotterra alert for the type is the reliable way to catch them.

Which runway is used at Dresden?

Mostly 22, landing towards the south-west, because of the prevailing westerly winds. Runway 04 is used on easterly days.

Do I need a car to spot at Dresden?

For most fence spots, yes. The observation deck is reachable by S-Bahn S2, and car park P4 by bus 77 or a 12-minute walk from the terminal.
