Planespotting Hannover — EDDV

Hannover Airport · EDDV / HAJ

P2Regional

Hannover Airport in Langenhagen, 11 km north of the city, is open 24 hours and runs two parallel runways with the terminals between them: the long northern 09L/27R (3,800 m), which gets most heavies and longer flights, and the southern 09R/27L (2,340 m), which takes much of the short-haul and TUI traffic. A short 09C/27C strip in the middle is for light aircraft only. There is no fixed rule about who uses which runway, and in Germany you may not listen to airband, so chasing a specific movement often means following the locals between sides. Be warned that Hannover has become one of the less spotter-friendly German airports: several former spots are now fenced off or closed to cars, police checks are frequent and new fences with razor wire mean a five-step ladder at some positions. Stick to the public places below, park legally, and you will still find plenty — especially when a trade fair brings in charters.

Where to spot

Mittelweg (between Münchner Straße and the fence)

A green strip between two industrial sites south of the southern runway, ending at an old disused crash gate. From the gate you cover all 09R/27L movements and some taxiing by the terminals; walk east along the fence for 27L touchdowns or back from it for 09R take-offs.

Getting there
Park on Münchner Straße in Langenhagen and walk to the fence. No shade and no facilities — bring water. A small ladder helps at the fence.
Best time
Either direction on the southern runway, about 10:00–17:00 with the sun behind you.
Lens
70–300 mm; about 80 mm for an A320 on the runway from the fence.

Car park P7 top deck

The top level of car park P7 looks onto final approach for runway 27R, and from the opposite corner onto aircraft taxiing out to 27R. A hangar blocks much of the view, so only the far corners work.

Getting there
Short walk from the terminals; pay parking inside, or a few time-limited free spaces on the street in front. Toilets on the ground floor. No ladder needed.
Best time
27R arrivals 10:00–17:00; taxiway shots 09:00–15:00.
Lens
About 180 mm for an A320 on final; 50 mm is enough for the taxiway.

Benkendorffstraße — end of the fence

Where the fence ends along Benkendorffstraße you can photograph 27R landings without a ladder. When special visitors such as Air Force One come to Hannover, this is where the crowds gather.

Getting there
Park at the prison (Justizvollzugsanstalt) at the end of Benkendorffstraße — parking on the road shoulder is strictly forbidden — and walk back along the street. Stay with your car; towing has been reported. No facilities.
Best time
Runway 27R arrivals, about 10:00–17:00.
Lens
Around 160 mm for a 737, 70 mm for a 747.

Car park P1 top level

The top of car park P1 (and P2 next to it) overlooks aircraft taxiing to and from the northern runway and part of the western apron. In winter you can catch de-icing on pad DP1.

Getting there
Car parks by Terminal A; charges apply and licence plates are scanned at the terminal roads, so pay before leaving. S-Bahn S5 from Hannover Hauptbahnhof stops under Terminal C.
Best time
Mornings until about 10:00; good for night shots of parked aircraft.
Lens
About 300 mm for an A320.

Kemptener Straße by Dachser Logistics

A quick spot for aircraft on final to runway 27L, from the grass beside the Dachser employee car park. No ladder needed, though the fence can creep into the bottom of the frame.

Getting there
Park on Kemptener Straße and walk a few metres along the Dachser fence. No facilities.
Best time
27L arrivals, about 10:00–17:00.
Lens
About 100 mm for an A320.

Visitor terrace (Besucherterrasse)

The glazed terrace between Terminals A and B overlooks part of the south-western apron and is combined with a small aviation exhibition aimed at children. It faces into the sun, so it is mostly useful on cloudy days and for night shots.

Getting there
Departure level between Terminals A and B, no security check; a small fee applies. Opening hours are limited and change — check with the airport before you go.
Best time
Overcast days, summer early mornings and late evenings, and winter evenings for night shots.
Lens
70–250 mm; hold a jacket behind the lens to kill reflections.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

TUI fly Deutschland has its home base and maintenance here, so 737-800s and MAX 8s to the Canaries, Egypt, Cape Verde and the Mediterranean dominate, joined by Corendon, SunExpress, Freebird, Air Cairo and Nesma for Turkey and Egypt. Eurowings keeps a based aircraft, Lufthansa flies to Frankfurt and Munich, and KLM, Air France, Swiss, Austrian, SAS, Turkish and Air Serbia connect their hubs. Night and evening cargo is a highlight: Amazon Air and FedEx operate scheduled freighters, and Volkswagen in nearby Wolfsburg occasionally charters heavy freighters such as Cargolux 747s. Trade fairs, above all Hannover Messe in April, bring bizjets and government aircraft.

FAQ

What's that plane over Hannover?

Spotterra's live map shows every aircraft over Hannover and Lower Saxony in real time, with type, registration and route — handy for working out which runway a freighter is lining up for.

Which runway should I go to at Hannover?

Heavies and longer flights usually use the northern 09L/27R, most short-haul and TUI flights the southern 09R/27L, but any aircraft can use either. Watch which way the locals move.

Is Hannover Airport spotter-friendly?

Less than it used to be. Several spots are fenced off or closed to cars and police checks are common. Use public places, park legally, never block roads with a ladder, and avoid the cargo area, which is private property.

When is the best time for rare aircraft at HAJ?

During big trade fairs such as Hannover Messe, and in the evening and at night for freighters — the airport operates 24 hours. A Spotterra alert catches charters that never appear in the timetable.
