Planespotting Katowice — EPKT

Katowice Airport (Pyrzowice) · EPKT / KTW

P2Charter & cargo

Katowice Pyrzowice, some 30 km north of the Silesian capital, is Poland's busiest charter airport and its second-largest cargo airport — a combination that makes it far more varied than its passenger numbers suggest. Summer weekends fill the ramp with holiday jets bound for Turkey, Egypt, Greece and Bulgaria, while night and early-morning freighters from DHL, UPS and their contractors use the cargo apron on the south-east side. Everything shares one long 3,200 m concrete runway, 08/26, used in both directions according to the wind. Spotters are well catered for: several spotting platforms around the field, including one next to a sports complex, plus quiet country lanes under both approaches. Construction of a new cargo area and railway work are changing the edges of the airfield, so a few older spots have disappeared — check the latest situation before you go.

Where to spot

Spotting platform by the sports complex

A newer viewing platform beside a sports ground, aimed at arrivals on runway 08. Departures from 26, including heavies, pass in front of you, and in the distance you can see 08 line-ups and runway exits.

Getting there
From the terminal take the first right into Kolejowa, then left into Dworcowa and right at the next junction; the sports complex is a few hundred metres on the right. Turn left at the first gate inside the complex, park at the end and walk to the platform.
Best time
Roughly 09:00 to 17:00 all year; in summer early morning and evening are backlit. Heat haze in the distance.
Lens
100–400 mm.

Zubrza road platform (08 approach)

A second platform north of the 08 approach at the end of Zubrza road. It sits very close to the approach path, so for arrivals walk further up the road for a better angle; the platform itself is good for line-ups.

Getting there
Via Kolejowa westbound, past the 08 approach path; the platform is on the left with parking.
Best time
Morning and evening in midsummer only; backlit the rest of the year.
Lens
70–300 mm.

Niwy road (08 arrivals, 26 departures)

A few hundred metres north of the Zubrza platform, Niwy road works for 08 arrivals and 26 departures. Opposite the bus stop on Zubrza road there are gaps in the vegetation for 08 departures and touchdowns.

Getting there
Park along Niwy road. Car essential.
Best time
Summer only: sunrise to mid-morning and evening to sunset. Backlit in winter.
Lens
70–300 mm.

Leśna road (26 approach)

A calm country lane under the approach to 26 at the eastern end, where you can walk along to choose your angle on arrivals.

Getting there
From the terminal leave via the official exit, take the next left at the BP station and continue to a small village, then turn left and cross under the 26 approach before parking. Houses nearby but no facilities.
Best time
Summer early mornings and evenings; backlit in winter.
Lens
70–300 mm.

P2 car park fence by the Moxy hotel

Walk from the terminal to the fence by car park P2 for stands 11–15, taxiing aircraft and runway movements. A good spot to log the charter ramp on a busy summer morning.

Getting there
Park in P2 next to the Moxy hotel and walk to the fence; airport buses run from Katowice city centre. Shoot through the mesh or use a small ladder.
Best time
Roughly 09:00 to 17:00; early and late summer light is behind the subjects.
Lens
70–300 mm.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

Wizz Air runs one of its largest Polish bases here with A320/A321neos, Ryanair has a base of 737s, and LOT links to Warsaw. The summer charter programme is the highlight: Enter Air 737s, Smartwings, Bulgarian charter airlines and a steady stream of Turkish leisure carriers serve the tour operators, with peaks on weekend mornings. Cargo is the second pillar — DHL runs a regional hub with 757 and 737 freighters and contractors such as ASL, and UPS also flies in, mostly at night and early morning. Bizjets for Silesian industry and occasional ad hoc freighters complete the picture; winter is noticeably quieter.

FAQ

What's that plane over Katowice?

Spotterra's live map shows aircraft over Katowice and Upper Silesia in real time with type, registration and route — useful for catching a night freighter or a charter diverted into Pyrzowice.

Are there official spotting platforms at Katowice Airport?

Yes — one beside a sports complex on the south-west side for 08 arrivals, and one at the end of Zubrza road north of the 08 approach. Both need a car.

Which spots have closed recently?

The fence by the cargo terminal is now a construction site for the new cargo area, and a former roadside spot near Szyneczka lost its view after railway works. Other edges of the field may change during construction — check before you go.

When is the best time to visit?

Summer weekends, when the charter programme peaks. Freighters are mainly at night and early morning, so long summer days give the best chance of photographing them.
