Planespotting Rovaniemi — EFRO
Rovaniemi is the airport where the Arctic Circle crosses the northern end of the runway, and for a few weeks every winter it turns into one of the most colourful ramps in Europe. From late November to mid-January, Santa and Lapland holiday flights pour in from the UK and the rest of the continent — TUI and Jet2 day trips, easyJet, Ryanair, Eurowings, Neos and a growing list of flag carriers — so the apron fills with liveries you would never expect this far north. Outside that peak it is a quiet Finnair and Norwegian station. The single 3,002 m runway, 03/21, is shared with the F/A-18 Hornets of the Finnish Air Force's Lapland Air Command, so military movements are part of the picture year-round. Light is the special challenge: in December the sun only skims the southern horizon for a couple of hours around midday, giving long blue twilight instead of daylight, while summer offers almost endless light but little traffic.

Terminal car park (right-hand side facing the terminal)
The car park beside the terminal looks out over the apron and is the simplest way to log the winter charter ramp, where several Santa flights may be parked at once. Visiting spotters have used it without problems.
- Getting there
- Next to the terminal, about 10 km north of Rovaniemi centre; airport buses and taxis run from town. Paid parking. Stay on the public side and well clear of the fence — the field is shared with the Air Force.
- Best time
- Around midday in December, the only time with usable daylight; summer gives light almost round the clock.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm.
Terminal exterior stairway
An external stairway on the right-hand side of the terminal (as you face it) gives a little height over the fence for apron and taxiway shots, and spotters have used it during military exercises. The terminal was enlarged in 2025, so check on arrival that it is still accessible.
- Getting there
- Walk from the terminal entrance. Do not block it — it is an emergency exit, so step aside for staff and passengers and leave if asked.
- Best time
- Midday in winter; long summer afternoons during exercises.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm for Hornets on the move, 70–200 mm for the ramp.
Departure hall gate windows (airside)
Rovaniemi is one of only three Finnish airports with jet bridges, and from the gates you look straight onto the charter stands. In peak season this is a warm way to see the ramp if you are flying out anyway.
- Getting there
- After security only, with a boarding pass. Expect crowds and long queues in December.
- Best time
- Any time you are travelling; blue-hour shots under apron lights work well in winter.
- Lens
- 24–105 mm against the glass.

What you'll see
Finnair links Rovaniemi to Helsinki all year, and Norwegian adds domestic flights. The real show is the winter season: from late November TUI Airways and Jet2 bring Santa day trips and short breaks from British regional airports, easyJet and Ryanair fly from across the UK, Ireland, France and Italy, and Eurowings, KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, Austrian, Edelweiss, Luxair, LOT, Iberia, Vueling, Transavia, Neos, Turkish Airlines, SunExpress and Israir all appear. December days see waves of 737s and A320-family jets, plus bizjets. The Air Force's Lapland Air Command flies F/A-18 Hornets from the shared runway, and international exercises bring visiting fighters some summers.
FAQ
What's that plane over Rovaniemi?
Spotterra's live map shows every ADS-B aircraft over Rovaniemi and Lapland in real time — handy in December, when a charter you have never heard of may be on approach.
When is the best time to visit Rovaniemi for spotting?
December, especially the weeks before Christmas, when Santa charters from all over Europe peak. Days are extremely short, so plan around midday light or embrace night and twilight shots.
Can I photograph the military jets?
Rovaniemi is a joint civil and Air Force airport. Shoot only from public areas, obey any signs prohibiting photography near military facilities and follow instructions from police or guards.
Is there an official spotting area?
No dedicated spotting platform is known. Most visitors work from around the terminal. Fences in northern Finland are tall, so a long lens and some height help.
