Planespotting Salzburg — LOWS
Salzburg's single runway, 15/33, is 2,750 m long and runs north–south just over three kilometres west-south-west of the old town, with the fortress and the Alps filling the background of almost every shot. For most of the year it is a calm regional airport dominated by Eurowings, but on winter Saturdays it turns into one of the busiest charter scenes in the Alps: British, Irish, Dutch and Scandinavian ski flights arrive in waves, the apron fills to the last stand and the airport itself calls the roof terrace a meeting point for spotters on those days. The other reason to come is on the airport's edge: Hangar-7, home of Red Bull's Flying Bulls collection of historic aircraft, with an exhibition, restaurant and bars under one glass roof. Terrain to the south shapes the operation, so check the active direction before you pick a spot. Note the terminal is about to change: Hangar 2 is being demolished in autumn 2026 for a new terminal due around 2030.

Visitor terrace on the Terminal 1 roof
The airport's free roof terrace puts you close to the apron and the runway with Hangar-7, the fortress and the mountains behind the aircraft. On winter Saturdays it is where Salzburg's spotters gather to log the charter rush, and on quiet days it is a relaxed place to catch Eurowings turns and business jets.
- Getting there
- Terminal 1: take the stairs from the first-floor restaurant up past the panorama lounge 'Das Wolfgang'. Trolleybus 2 or 10 from the city (about 25 minutes from the main station, every 10 minutes). Open daily and free, with a café in good weather; closed in snow or ice — check before you go.
- Best time
- Winter Saturdays for volume. The terrace faces the runway from the terminal side, so mornings and late afternoons give the best angles; around midday the light can be harsh.

Hangar-7 (Flying Bulls)
Red Bull's glass-and-steel hangar on Wilhelm-Spazier-Straße houses the Flying Bulls' historic aircraft — warbirds such as the P-38 Lightning and P-51 Mustang — plus a Formula 1 collection and art exhibitions. Restaurant Ikarus and the Carpe Diem café sit inside, so you can eat with aircraft overhead and airliners moving outside.

- Wilhelm-Spazier-Straße 7A, at the airport site. The aircraft museum has its own opening hours — check the Hangar-7 website, as the venue reopened in 2025 after a redesign.

- Any time it's open; for outdoor shots of Flying Bulls aircraft, watch their display and maintenance flights in the warmer months.

Airport perimeter roads at the runway ends
With a north–south runway, arrivals and departures pass over open land and suburbs at both ends, and many local photographers shoot from public roads and paths around the perimeter. The mountain backdrop to the south makes approach shots here unlike anywhere else in Austria.

- On foot or by bike from the trolleybus stops along Innsbrucker Bundesstraße; park only where legal and stay outside the fence. Use WebTrak or the Spotterra map to see which end is in use before you walk out.

- North–south runway: the west side of the field has the sun behind you in the afternoon, the east side in the morning.

Eurowings has a base and is the largest operator year-round, with Lufthansa to Frankfurt and a scattering of Turkish, Pegasus, Corendon, Air Serbia, airBaltic, SkyAlps and flydubai flights. Winter is the show: Jet2 and TUI Airways from across the UK, easyJet, British Airways, Ryanair, Transavia from the Netherlands and Belgium, SAS, Norwegian, Finnair and Icelandair all bring skiers in, concentrated on Saturdays. In 2025 the airport handled about 1.8 million passengers and 14,700 movements. Business jets follow the Salzburg Festival in summer and the ski resorts in winter, and the Flying Bulls fleet adds historic aircraft movements you won't see at any other Central European airport.
