Planespotting Sofia — LBSF
Sofia Airport sits about 10 km east of the Bulgarian capital and is the country's main gateway: home to Bulgaria Air, BH Air and Bulgarian Air Charter, and a base for both Wizz Air and Ryanair. Everything happens on one 3,600 m runway, 09/27. Westerly winds dominate, so 27 is the direction you will see most often, with arrivals coming in over the fields east of the airport. What makes Sofia worth the trip is what turns up between the A320s and 737s: DHL Boeing 757 freighters, airframes flying in for heavy maintenance at Lufthansa Technik Sofia, and a steady trickle of Soviet-built cargo types such as the An-12, An-26 and Il-76. The Bulgarian Air Force shares the field as Vrazhdebna air base, so C-27J Spartans and L-410s of the transport squadron are part of the scene. Spotting is relaxed by European standards, metro line 4 runs right to Terminal 2, and several spots have natural mounds that clear the fence without a ladder.

Iskar River (east of Terminal 2)
The default Sofia spot and the only one with food and toilets within walking distance. A raised bank by the Iskar river overlooks the runway and taxiway H, so on 27 you get departures taxiing past plus the arrivals, and on 09 you get the departures plus arrivals turning off towards the terminal. Taxi shots of the DHL 757 come out tight even at 70 mm.
- Getting there
- Metro line 4 or car to Terminal 2, then walk east through the park until you reach the river — 10 to 15 minutes on foot. If the stairs from the metro station are blocked by works, walk along the terminal towards car park 4 and enter the park from there.
- Best time
- Works on both runway directions. From the south side the sun is behind you roughly 09:00–17:00 in summer and 10:00–15:00 in winter. Expect heat haze on the runway on warm, calm late mornings.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm; around 180 mm fills the frame with an A320 on the runway.
Iskar River East (dirt track along the fence)
The opposite bank of the same river, reached from the eastern side. This is the best place in Sofia for runway 09 departures, with some 27 arrivals possible as well. Quiet and empty, with nothing around you.
- Getting there
- From Krivinski Road a dirt track runs about 1.5 km parallel to the fence to the river. Most cars manage it in dry weather; after rain or in snow it may need 4×4. On foot: bus 14 to Nova Mahala, then about 20 minutes' walk. Bring water and food.
- Best time
- Runway 09 departures, from mid-morning to late afternoon in summer when the sun is to the south. A small two-step ladder helps with the fence here.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm.
Krivinski Road meadow (runway 27 approach)
Open fields along Krivinski Road under the final approach to 27. Aircraft pass low, so you can work anything from a classic side-on landing shot to a near-overhead view. Plenty of room to move along the road to change angle.
- Getting there
- By car, go round the north side of the airport to Krivinski Road and park on the verge — there is plenty of space. Bus 14 to Nova Mahala also gets you there.
- Best time
- Runway 27 arrivals. In winter the south side of the approach works all day; in summer cross to the north side for early morning and evening light.
- Lens
- 24–70 mm for overhead passes, around 80 mm for an A320 side-on.
Mound at taxiway H / runway 27 intersection
A mound beside the fence where taxiway H meets the runway end. Departures line up on 27 right in front of you and landings come in over your shoulder, so you get both movements on 27 from one place.
- Getting there
- About 600 m of gravel track from near the lake spot. The track turns to mud after rain — safer to park at the Iskar River East area and walk.
- Best time
- Runway 27 operations. Usable most of the day; summer evenings are against the light.
- Lens
- 100–200 mm; a 737 at line-up is around 140 mm.
The Lake (north fence)
A rise by the northern fence covering 27 arrivals and departures. The military apron and the old Antonov and Tupolev airframes used for security training are visible but too far to photograph well, even with 600 mm.
- Getting there
- By car from Krivinski Road: head north past the 27 approach lights, then after about 1 km take the farm track through the field on the left to the fence. Turn off before the entrance to the neighbouring facility.
- Best time
- North-side spot, so summer only: from sunrise to about 09:00 and from about 18:00 to sunset. Not usable in winter.
- Lens
- 100–250 mm.

What you'll see
Bulgaria Air, Wizz Air and Ryanair account for most movements, flying A320-family jets, 737s and Embraer E-Jets; BH Air and other charter operators add summer flying to the Black Sea and beyond. The highlights are cargo and maintenance traffic: DHL 757 freighters, aircraft ferrying in to Lufthansa Technik Sofia, occasional 747 and 777 freighters, and regular Soviet-built types such as An-12, An-26, An-124 and Il-76. The 16th Transport Squadron at Vrazhdebna flies C-27J Spartan, L-410 and An-26, and holds an open day once or twice a year. El Al also serves Sofia — see the security note below.

FAQ
What's that plane over Sofia?
Open the Spotterra live map: every ADS-B-equipped aircraft over Sofia appears with type, registration and route, updated in real time in your browser.
Which runway direction does Sofia use most?
Runway 27, because the prevailing wind is westerly. Arrivals then come in over the fields along Krivinski Road east of the airport.
Is spotting at Sofia Airport tolerated?
Generally yes — police may occasionally check your ID. Don't touch the fence, and when an El Al flight is on the ground, keep away from the fence until it has left.
Can I see the military aircraft at Vrazhdebna?
The transport squadron's C-27Js use the same runway, so you catch them landing and departing. The military apron itself is too far for good photos; the squadron's open day once or twice a year is the way to see them up close.
