Planespotting Spangdahlem AB — ETAD
Spangdahlem, on the Eifel plateau north of Trier, is one of the last USAF fighter bases in Germany. The 52nd Fighter Wing flies F-16CM Fighting Falcons in the defence-suppression role, which makes this the closest place in the region to see American fast jets flying daily from their home base. The single runway, 05/23 (3,055 m), was extended in 2005 so that C-17s and C-5s can use it, and the base also has a passenger terminal for Air Mobility Command, so heavies and contracted charters appear among the F-16s. KC-135 tankers, NATO E-3 AWACS circuits and fighter deployments from other units — F-35s and F/A-18s have recently drawn crowds — add variety. Runway 23 is used more often, but with light winds either direction is possible. It is a rural base with no public transport to the spots, police patrols are frequent, and local spotters have lost places through litter and parking on the main road. Behave impeccably.

Field road off the B50 (south-west, afternoon)
A dead-end track between two fields just west of the B50, under the approach to runway 05 and the climb-out from 23. F-16s depart over you in the afternoon light, and arrivals on 05 come in low over the fields. It has become very busy during fighter deployments.
- Getting there
- Turn west off the B50 a short distance north of the spot and follow the track to its end. Park clear of the main road — police have cleared this area when people stood on the B50 or left rubbish. Keep your camera down when you are not shooting.

- 05 arrivals and 23 departures, from late afternoon to sunset, May to September.

Farm track by the B50 near the south gate (morning)
A small farm road leading onto the fields beside the B50, close to the base's southern entrance. It covers the same 05 arrivals and 23 departures as the afternoon spot, but with morning light, and it works year-round.
- Getting there
- Pull onto the side road off the B50; you are parking on the farmer's working track, so stay with your car and move it if asked. The base gate is round the corner — do not point your camera at it.
- Best time
- From sunrise to around midday all year.

Meadow by the Pietà chapel (Pieta-Kapelle) — 23 departures
A field and small dirt mound reached from the chapel beside the B50. F-16s departing on 23 usually bank towards you, which gives dynamic top-side shots. Even though it is near the base entrance, you are out of sight of the gate.

- Drive up the field road from the B50 to the Pieta-Kapelle and park there or across the B50, then take the footpath onto the field. There are no facilities; the nearest are in the surrounding villages.

Binsfeld forest track — 23 arrivals (on foot)
North of Binsfeld, a forest road leads to the north-eastern boundary of the base under the approach to 23. It is the morning spot for arrivals, but it is right at the perimeter, so it needs the most care: stay well back from the fence, do not put up a ladder there, and leave if asked.

- Park in Binsfeld village and walk north along Saalholzstraße into the forest — about 2 km. The forest roads are closed to private vehicles and fines are issued, so do not drive in.

The core of the traffic is the resident F-16CM Fighting Falcons of the 52nd Fighter Wing, flying training waves on weekdays and quiet at weekends. KC-135 tankers and Air Mobility Command C-17s visit regularly, with occasional C-5Ms and contracted charters such as 777s and 767s supporting the base passenger terminal. Fighter deployments by other US and allied units come and go and draw crowds of spotters. NATO E-3 AWACS from Geilenkirchen sometimes fly approaches. Civil movements are rare, and activity drops sharply during holidays and when the wing deploys.
