Planespotting Wroclaw — EPWR
Wrocław Copernicus Airport, at Strachowice about 10 km west of the city, is a compact one-runway airport with a spotting mix that outclasses its traffic numbers. Ryanair and Wizz Air dominate the timetable, holiday charters swell the summer, and the airport is regularly used by Polish Air Force transports, the NATO Strategic Airlift Capability C-17s and occasionally US Air Force aircraft. Runway 11/29 is used in both directions with no strong preference, so check the wind before choosing a side. The terminal and parking are on the north side, which leaves those spots backlit in winter, while the forest along the southern fence near the village of Kłębowice has the sun behind you for most of the day. Expect a quiet, rural setting, a car as almost a requirement, and a ladder for many of the fence positions.

Long-term car park hill, west of the terminal
A small hill inside the long-term car park with runway 11 operations and the apron in front. The easiest spot to reach, and the only one with terminal facilities on the doorstep.
- Getting there
- Park at the terminal and walk up to the hill. Walkable from the terminal for anyone arriving by bus or taxi.
- Best time
- Summer: sunrise to around 09:00, and evenings after 18:00 for ramp shots. Backlit all day in winter.
- Lens
- 50–300 mm (A320 on the runway around 250 mm).
Abandoned car park by the old terminal (Skarżyńskiego)
An empty former car park west of the cargo terminal, next to the fence, with the taxiway and arrivals on 29 in view. Military visitors such as C-17s often taxi past here.
- Getting there
- From the terminal access road head south at the large roundabout on Skarżyńskiego to the former passenger terminal, park by the roadside and walk through the parking lot to the empty area. Ladder needed.
- Best time
- Summer, sunrise to about 09:00. Backlit in winter.
- Lens
- 18–300 mm (C-17 around 150 mm).
Chłopska roadside, Smolec
A simple roadside position in the village of Smolec, by Chłopska 60, for aircraft on approach to 29. Departures off 11 are already high by the time they reach you.
- Getting there
- By car to Chłopska street, Smolec, near the car repair workshop; stop along the road where it is safe. Nearest shop about 2 km away.
- Best time
- All day — you can move to the other side of the road as the sun shifts.
- Lens
- 50–300 mm.
Forest fence south of the runway (Leśna street, Kłębowice)
A walk through the woods from Kłębowice brings you to the southern perimeter fence, where you can cover all 11/29 movements and the light aircraft of the aeroclub in front of you.
- Getting there
- Drive to the end of Leśna street in the north-west of Kłębowice, park at the forest edge and walk north to the fence, then east along it. Nothing around but forest.
- Best time
- Summer: early afternoon to late afternoon. Winter: almost all day, with the sun behind you.
- Lens
- 150–400 mm.
Western fence off road 362
On the west side of the field, a dirt track leads to the fence for arrivals on 11 and departures on 29. Walking further along the fence brings you closer to the action; at a crash gate about 20 minutes on, you can see every movement, including line-ups on 11.
- Getting there
- By car only: leave road 362 eastbound onto the bumpy dirt road, drive in as far as sensible and continue on foot along the fence. Difficult in wet weather or with a low car. A two-step ladder helps.
- Best time
- All day by moving along the fence; afternoon to sunset for line-ups at the crash gate. Heat haze on hot days.
- Lens
- 70–400 mm (737-800 side-on around 180 mm).
Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.
What you'll see
Ryanair and Wizz Air base aircraft here and fly 737-800s, 737-8200s and A320/A321neos to the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia and southern Europe. LOT connects to Warsaw, Lufthansa to Frankfurt and Munich, and other network carriers link to their hubs. Summer weekends bring charter traffic from Enter Air and other tour operators to Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Spain. The interesting part is military: Polish Air Force transports and the Strategic Airlift Capability's C-17 Globemasters use Wrocław regularly, and US Air Force aircraft appear now and then. Light aircraft of the local aeroclub and occasional bizjets round out the mix.

FAQ
What's that plane over Wroclaw?
Open Spotterra's live map: every ADS-B aircraft over Wrocław and Lower Silesia shows in real time with type, registration and route — including military transports that never appear on the departure boards.
Do I need a car to spot at Wrocław?
Practically yes. Only the car park hill near the terminal is easy on foot; the southern and western fence spots need a car and some walking through forest.
Which side has the best light?
The south side. Spots near the terminal face south and are backlit in winter, while the forest fence near Kłębowice has the sun behind you for most of the day.
Can I photograph the military aircraft?
From public places outside the fence, yes. Polish law forbids photographing military installations marked with signs, so watch for signage and follow instructions from security.
