Planespotting Aviano AB — LIPA
Aviano sits at the foot of the Pre-Alps in Friuli, 15 km north of Pordenone, and few military airfields in Europe offer such a backdrop: F-16s climbing out in front of mountains that carry snow for half the year. Via Rastello (SP31), Roveredo in Piano — morning
The standard morning spot under the runway 05 approach: the cycle path along Via Rastello and the farm track into the adjacent field give clean side views of F-16s on short final, with the mountains behind on a clear day. Runway 23 departures pass here too.
- Getting there
- By car to Roveredo in Piano and the SP31 towards Budoia; park at the end of the dirt track without blocking farm vehicles, or near the closed 'Il Baffo' restaurant. Car break-ins have been reported there — leave nothing visible. No public transport to the spot.
- Best time
- Landings on 05 from sunrise to early afternoon, with the sun in the south-east behind you.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm; an F-16 needs about 250 mm.
Via Rastello (SP31) near Via Bellini — afternoon
Further north along the same cycle path, on the north-west side of the approach. It turns the light around for afternoon landings on 05, and it is the place to be on Friday afternoons when visiting NATO jets arrive for a weekend near Venice.

- Park near the junction of Via Rastello with Via V. Bellini and walk onto the cycle path; mind the cyclists.
- Best time
- 05 landings from late afternoon; the mountains hide the sun well before actual sunset.

Fields by the SP7 fuel station (05 departures)
Behind a small grove next to a fuel station on the SP7, open farmland looks onto runway 05 departures. Closer in you catch F-16s rotating and tucking the gear; further south-east across the fields is better for C-130s and C-17s, which are already high by the time they pass the first position.

- By car on the SP7 (the main Pordenone–Aviano road past the base); park at the fuel station and walk about 100 m through the trees. Stay on the field edges when crops are growing.

Piancavallo road and Castello d'Aviano viewpoints
The mountain road climbing from Aviano to Piancavallo, and the lanes around Castello d'Aviano, look down on the whole base from the north. It is an overview position rather than a photo spot for individual jets — good for watching launches and recoveries and for landscape shots of the airfield in the plain.

- By car from Aviano town on the SP7 towards Piancavallo; use proper lay-bys on the hairpins, not the carriageway.
- Best time
- Morning, when the sun is behind you to the south-east and haze has not yet built over the plain.

Nearly all movements are training sorties by the resident F-16CM/DMs of the 510th and 555th Fighter Squadrons, usually in waves from mid-morning into early afternoon, plus HH-60 Pave Hawk sorties. Visitors are the bonus: Italian Air Force Eurofighters and trainers doing low approaches, other NATO fighters on weekend navigation stops (Friday afternoons are well known for this), Ramstein-based C-130Js and occasional C-17s supporting the US Army's 173rd Airborne Brigade in nearby Vicenza. Activity drops sharply at weekends and US holidays.
