Planespotting Madrid — LEMD
Madrid–Barajas is the main bridge between Europe and Latin America, and that is what makes it special: Iberia's entire long-haul fleet is based here, and every morning a wave of widebodies arrives from Bogotá, Lima, Buenos Aires, Mexico City and São Paulo. Four runways form two parallel pairs set at an angle: 14L/32R and 14R/32L, and 18L/36R and 18R/36L. In northerly flow, which is the more common configuration, aircraft land on 32L/32R and depart from 36L/36R; in southerly flow they land on 18L/18R and depart from 14L/14R, and the direction can flip during the day. Transatlantic arrivals generally use the western runways. The field is vast, so a car and at least 400 mm of lens help a lot. A free official spotter terrace makes it easier for first-timers.

AENA spotter terrace (Mirador), Circunvalación de Iberia
A fenced, official viewing enclosure built by AENA for spotters on the west side, near the T1–T3 complex. Aircraft from terminals 1–3 taxi past at close range on their way to 36L/R, along with arrivals vacating 32L and traffic to and from T4. A three-step platform lifts you above the fence.
- Getting there
- On the Iberia ring road (Carretera de Circunvalación de Iberia), with a handful of reserved parking spaces; metro line 8 to Barajas plus a short walk. You must get a free pass at the accreditation booth before the security checkpoint — bring your passport. In 2025, visitors reported Saturday afternoon opening only and Sundays closed; check AENA's website before going.
- Best time
- Afternoon to sunset. Taxiway reconstruction since 2025 means more construction vehicles in shot and slightly longer lenses.

- 20–100 mm normally; 80–200 mm while the nearest taxiway is under works.
Barajas hill (transmission-tower hill)
A dry hill with a transmission tower overlooking the taxiways west of T1–T3. You can log almost everything here: departures from terminals 1–3 heading to 36L/R, T4 arrivals off 32L and 18L/R arrivals taxiing in. 14R departures are visible but heat haze is strong.
- Getting there
- Metro line 8 to Barajas. Walk along Avenida de Logroño, cross the bridge and take the footpath to the tower — avoid crossing the fast roundabout. By car, park at the cemetery dead end nearby and walk down.
- Best time
- Late afternoon to sunset. No shade; bring water from the supermarkets in Barajas village.

A-2 footbridges by the airport hotels — 32L arrivals
Two footbridges over the A-2 motorway near the Marriott and Holiday Inn on the southern side. From the top of the bridge on the airport side you get all 32L arrivals and heavy 14R departures climbing out.
- Getting there
- Walk 10–15 minutes from the A-2 hotels (most have free shuttles from the terminals). By car, park near the western bridge by the Marriott; the eastern bridge is hard to reach by car.
- Best time
- Northerly flow, from early afternoon to sunset. The motorway is noisy and adds heat haze.

- 200–500 mm.
Servair mound, cargo area — 32L arrivals
A mound beside the Servair catering building, parallel to 32L. Heavies on short final pass with a backdrop of the parking and storage area behind the runway, and later 14R departures rotate in front of you.
- Getting there
- Enter the cargo area from the M-14 or M-22 and follow Avenida Central past the cargo sheds to the last roundabout. The southern gate is weekdays only. On foot from the A-2 hotels via the closed roads. Guardia Civil occasionally move people on.
- Best time
- Northerly flow, afternoon to sunset.

Carrefour car park off the A-2 — 32L morning arrivals
The car park of the Carrefour hypermarket south-east of the airfield sits under the 32L approach. Power lines run along the access road, but aircraft pass above them. Toilets and food are right next to you.
- Getting there
- Only reachable from the A-2 carriageways (towards Madrid or Zaragoza). Park anywhere in the lot.
- Best time
- Northerly flow, sunrise to noon in summer; in winter the sun is only right for a short time.
- Lens
- 100–400 mm (about 350 mm for an A320).
Mirador de Paracuellos (bunker) — 32R arrivals
A Civil War bunker on the escarpment east of the airfield, near Los Berrocales del Jarama, looking down on aircraft landing on 32R and heavy 14L departures. It gives an elevated, rural view you don't get anywhere else at Madrid.
- Getting there
- Turn off Camino del Puente before Los Berrocales del Jarama. The track is a protected drovers' road (vía pecuaria) closed to cars, so park by the road to the north and walk. Mind the cliff edges.
- Best time
- Morning only: sunrise to about noon in summer, a short window in winter.
- Lens
- 200–500 mm.

Iberia runs A350s, A330s and A321XLRs, Air Europa flies 787s, and Iberia Express, Vueling, Ryanair and easyJet fill the short-haul banks. The Latin American line-up includes LATAM 787s, Avianca, Aeroméxico, Aerolíneas Argentinas, Boliviana de Aviación and Copa. Spanish long-haul and charter operators Plus Ultra, World2Fly and Wamos add A330s and A350s. Emirates A380s, Qatar, Turkish and the Chinese carriers bring more widebodies. Cygnus Air and Swiftair run freighters, and Torrejón air base nearby adds Spanish Air Force traffic. The morning transatlantic wave is the highlight.
