Planespotting Barcelona — LEBL
Barcelona–El Prat is one of the most relaxed big airports in Europe to spot at: there are official viewing platforms, the police rarely bother anyone at the public spots, and the beach is a short walk from the departure runway. The airport works to a fixed preferential scheme. By day (07:00–23:00) the long runway 06L/24R takes arrivals and only the heaviest departures, and the parallel 06R/24L takes almost all departures. The westerly configuration — landings on 24R, take-offs from 24L — is preferred and only gives way to 06L/06R when the tailwind exceeds about 10 knots. At night the cross runway 02/20 comes into play, with landings on 20 over the city. Mirador de l'Aeroport, runway 24R threshold
Barcelona's official spotting platform: a raised viewing deck about three metres high at the end of the road towards Platja del Prat, right at the 24R threshold. Arrivals pass overhead and you can see across to Terminal 2; the rare heavy departures from 24R are easy over the fence.
- Getting there
- Follow signs for the beach (Platja del Prat) and park at the Tanatori car park — not on the sandy lot under the approach. Bus PR3 from El Prat station (metro L9 Sud from the terminals) runs in summer, roughly June to September. Paid parking on weekdays; car break-ins have been reported, so leave nothing visible.
- Best time
- Westerly operations (24R arrivals), 07:00–14:00 in summer and all day in winter. A bench and trees give some shade; public toilet nearby.

- 50–200 mm — you are very close.
Tanatori car park — 24R arrivals, afternoon
Next to the funeral home (Tanatori) a few minutes from the Mirador. Once the light swings round, move here for side-on shots of 24R arrivals. You only see the approach, but the angle is clean.
- Getting there
- Same road and bus PR3 as the Mirador. Parking is paid on weekdays (about €5 for three hours), free at weekends and on public holidays.
- Best time
- 16:00 to sunset in summer; not useful in winter.

Terminal 1 balcony, end of Concourse A (departures level)
A small balcony at the end of the departures kerb of Terminal 1. With easterly flow, 06L arrivals come in in front of you, and aircraft from Terminal 2 taxi round the 06L threshold. It's the best choice if you arrive by metro without a car.

- Metro L9 Sud or train to T1; by car use T1 parking building F, take the escalator from level 0 to departures and walk to the end of the kerb. Snack bar and toilets below.
- Best time
- Easterly operations (06L arrivals), 07:00–14:00 in summer. No shade, and heat haze can soften the arrivals.

Platja del Prat roundabout — 24L departures
A small area with benches by the roundabout past the 06R/24L tunnel on the beach road. Aircraft turn onto 24L close in front of you and rotate along the runway. A low wall and a small concrete hut give a little extra height — climb only briefly, as the police don't like it.
- Getting there
- Drive the beach road past the tunnel, take the first exit at the roundabout and park along that road away from the crash gate, or use the beach car park. Bus PR3 to Platja del Prat – La Pineda, then walk back a few hundred metres. Don't park at the spot itself.
- Best time
- Westerly operations, sunrise to 14:00 in summer, all day in winter. Heat haze along the runway.

Beach viewing tower, Platja del Prat
An official viewing tower at the far end of the beach road, reopened in 2025. From the upper level you look onto 24L departures climbing out over the dunes; the very heaviest aircraft can still be low behind the trees. There is room for only about ten people at the top.

- The car park at the end of the road is closed, so walk or cycle from the beach car park, or take bus PR3 in summer to the 'Platja del Prat – Mirador' stop. Toilets and summer beach bars nearby.
- Best time
- Westerly operations, 07:00–14:00 in summer, all day in winter.

- 300 mm minimum.
Tourist information tower, Platja del Prat entrance
A second viewing tower by the beach tourist information office, with a clear look at aircraft lining up on 24L and 24R movements across the field in the afternoon.

- Reached only through the tourist information office, so you can go up only during its opening hours, which vary by season and weekday — check before going. Bus PR3 to Platja del Prat – La Pineda.
- Best time
- Mornings for 24L line-ups; afternoon for 24R movements. Heat haze on hot days.

Vueling dominates, with Ryanair, easyJet, Iberia and the European flag carriers close behind. Level flies A330s across the Atlantic, and long-haul visitors include Emirates A380s, Qatar, Singapore, Cathay Pacific, American, Delta, United, Air Canada, Air Transat and LATAM. Summer brings a crowd of charter and leisure carriers from all over Europe, many of them rare at central European airports. FedEx and DHL run freighters, and Qatar Cargo calls too. The busiest and most varied months are June to September.

Which runway is in use at Barcelona?

Can I get to the El Prat spots without a car?
Yes, in summer: metro L9 Sud to El Prat, then bus PR3 to the Tanatori and the beach. Outside June–September there is no regular bus to the beach spots, so plan on a long walk, a bike, or the Terminal 1 balcony instead.
Is spotting allowed at Barcelona airport?
Yes. The Mirador and the beach towers are official viewing points and police generally leave spotters alone at public spots. Off the official areas — for example the hill by the Iberia hangar — police may check ID and send you to an official location.
