Planespotting Rome — LIRF
Fiumicino is Italy's biggest airport and the home of ITA Airways, and it works unlike most hubs: three runways with fixed jobs. Almost every departure rolls on runway 25 towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, while arrivals split between the two north–south parallels — Schengen flights mostly on 16L/34R, non-Schengen and the morning long-haul wave mostly on 16R/34L. Which end of the parallels is used depends on the wind, so you will be driving between the north and south sides; a car is essentially mandatory, because nearly every spot sits on farm tracks or the coastal Viale Coccia di Morto. The reward is variety: North American, Gulf and East Asian widebodies alongside ITA's new liveries, low-cost bases of Ryanair, Wizz Air and Vueling, and long summer days with dry weather. The perimeter fence carries sensors — stay back from it, never touch it and don't poke a lens through the mesh, or security will be with you within minutes.

Viale di Lago Traiano lay-by (34L arrivals)
A wide gravel turnout just off the airport exit road, right under the final approach to 34L. It is the quickest spot to reach from the terminals and catches the non-Schengen widebodies coming in from the south. Walk back across the canal to the southern side if you want departures off 16R instead.
- Getting there
- By car: leave the airport on one of the first exits towards Viale di Lago Traiano and park in the large turnout on the north side of the road. Fiumicino town is close for food; a panini van often parks here around midday.
- Best time
- Northerly-flow arrivals on 34L, from sunrise to late morning when the sun is in the east behind you.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm; a 777 fills the frame at around 100 mm, a 737 at about 165 mm.
Viale Coccia di Morto — gravel side road
The classic evening spot for 34L arrivals: a short gravel track off the coastal road ending at the edge of a field, with heavies crossing the frame side-on. On a busy summer evening the North American and Asian arrivals come in one after another.
- Getting there
- From the large roundabout south-west of the airport head north on Viale Coccia di Morto and take the first gravel road on the left; drive about 150 m and park on the verge or in the lot used for a weekend farmers' market. No facilities — bring water.
- Best time
- 34L arrivals from mid-afternoon (around 15:00 in summer) until sunset, with the sun in the west over your shoulder.
- Lens
- 100–200 mm; about 105 mm for a 777, 160 mm for an A321.
Via del Pesce Luna — 16R departures and the beach
Two shots from one road. At the junction with Viale Coccia di Morto you get the heavy departures that use 16R — the A380 always does, and many US-bound twins too. Follow Via del Pesce Luna to the public beach at its end and you can watch runway 25 departures climb out over the sea and bank south, with no fence and little heat haze.
- Getting there
- By car along Viale Coccia di Morto, then park on Via del Pesce Luna without blocking the gate of the disused building. A bus from T1 runs along the southern part of Viale Coccia di Morto, but walking the fast road is unpleasant. The Agip station nearby has supplies.
- Best time
- 16R departures in the afternoon and evening (sun in the west); the beach works best in the morning for southbound banking shots off 25.
- Lens
- 75–100 mm for 16R heavies; 400–500 mm from the beach.
Focene café and canal bridge (16R/34L)
On the road from the airport towards Focene the first building is a café whose rooftop terrace (ask inside) and the raised bridge over the canal opposite give a view of the whole of runway 16R/34L. Light poles and a low mound intrude a little, so it is best when you know something special is using this runway. The cycle path along the fence nearby faces runway 25 departures.
- Getting there
- By car towards Focene; parking at the café. Order something if you use the terrace. Focene's hotels are within walking distance of the western-runway spots.
- Best time
- 16R/34L movements from mid-afternoon to sunset; 25 departures from the cycle path only from about 18:00. Heat haze is strong in the early afternoon.
- Lens
- 70–400 mm.
Via della Muratella (16L arrivals)
An open field next to a small lay-by on the east side of the airport, where Schengen traffic on 16L passes low overhead on final. The overhead power line stays out of the shot, and the trees give some shade on a hot morning.
- Getting there
- By car from the north side via Viale di Porto, around the approach lights to the roundabout and right into Via della Muratella; park in the lay-by. Nothing nearby, and the lay-by has an unsavoury reputation — don't leave valuables in the car.
- Best time
- Southerly-flow arrivals on 16L, sunrise until about 11:00.
- Lens
- 70–160 mm; about 70 mm for a 787, 160 mm for an A320.
Via Mario Castoldi, cargo area (34R arrivals)
A roadside spot in the cargo zone where Schengen arrivals on 34R pass in front of you, side-on. A useful fallback for narrowbody variety when 34R is busy.
- Getting there
- By car only: follow the 'Cargo Area' signs through the one-way roads south of the terminals to Via Mario Castoldi and park at the roadside where lorries wait. Security may move you off the adjacent car park.
- Best time
- 34R arrivals from mid-afternoon to sunset.
- Lens
- 150–220 mm; about 160 mm for an A321.

What you'll see
ITA Airways dominates with A320neo-family jets and its long-haul A330neo and A350 fleet in the new blue livery. Ryanair, Wizz Air, Vueling and easyJet supply the low-cost volume. The long-haul mix is where Fiumicino shines: Delta, American, United, Air Canada and Air Transat across the Atlantic, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad and Saudia from the Gulf, and Air China, China Eastern, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air and Asiana from East Asia. The long-haul peak runs from early morning to midday. Pure freighters are scarce in daylight, and summer brings a big boost of seasonal routes and charters.

What's that plane over Rome?

Is there a viewing terrace at Fiumicino?
Not a proper one. The old landside gallery cafe in Terminal B lost its views during the terminal rebuild, and from airside the view is limited. Plan on outdoor spots and a car.
Which runway will my arrival use at LIRF?
Roughly: Schengen arrivals on 16L/34R, non-Schengen and the morning long-haul wave on 16R/34L, almost all departures on 25. There are exceptions — during heavy 25 departure waves everything may land on 16L/34R — so listen to ATC or watch the live map to be sure.
Can I shoot through the fence?
Don't. The Fiumicino perimeter fence has sensors and security responds quickly. Stand back from it and use the elevated or open spots listed above; ladders against the fence are a bad idea here.
