Planespotting Bergamo — LIME
Orio al Serio, marketed as Milan Bergamo, is the third-busiest airport in Italy by passengers and almost entirely a Ryanair show: the Irish group (flying many aircraft as Malta Air) runs its largest Italian base here, so 737-800s and 737 MAX 8-200s dominate from dawn to midnight. What makes it pleasant for photography is the geometry. There is one main runway, 10/28, running east–west with the terminal and most spots on the south side, so the sun is behind you for most of the day. Runway 28 is used more often than 10, and a free car park at its eastern end is the closest thing to an official viewing area. The hills of Bergamo's Città Alta and the Alpine foothills form the backdrop to the north. A short strip, 12/30, belongs to the local aeroclub. Summer adds charter flights, and the Monza Grand Prix in September brings extra business jets.

Car park at the end of runway 28 (Via Tonale)
A free open car park between factories close to the 28 threshold — locals know it as the place to watch landings, and you can park and stay as long as you like. It covers everything on runway 28: arrivals, departures and taxiing aircraft, plus heavier departures off 10.
- Getting there
- By car, head left out of the terminal to the last roundabout, turn left, continue about 2 km and cross the motorway on the Via Tonale bridge; the road straight ahead leads to the fence. On foot from the terminal it takes about 20 minutes along the cargo-area road. A Q8 petrol station just south has a shop and toilet.
- Best time
- Runway 28, from about 10:00 to late afternoon; backlit early and late in summer.
- Lens
- 50–200 mm; a 737 on the runway is about 100 mm.
Car rental multi-storey car park roof
The top deck of the parking garage west of the terminal looks over the apron, the taxiway and the western end of the runway. It is the best place for runway 10 traffic and for an overview of the Ryanair ramp.
- Getting there
- From the terminal follow signs for the car rental centre to the multi-storey; go to the top floor. The Oriocenter shopping centre across the motorway has cheaper food and toilets.
- Best time
- Runway 10 in use, from about 10:00 into the evening.
- Lens
- 50–300 mm (apron around 50 mm, arrivals in front of the hills 200–300 mm).
Crash gate and small park near the river
Two positions close together at the eastern end: the fence beside a crash gate for line-ups on 28, and a small park across the road for arrivals. Trees give shade on hot days.
- Getting there
- Follow the route to the Via Tonale car park but turn right after the motorway bridge toward the river, then take the first closed side road on the left and park. Stand at the fence beside the gate, not in front of it. A 3-step ladder is needed.
- Best time
- Line-ups from sunrise to about 10:00 in summer (very short window in winter); arrivals from 10:00 to late afternoon.
- Lens
- 50–100 mm; a landing 737 is about 80 mm.
Terminal windows between gates A2 and A9
If you are flying out, the airside glass front gives clean views of aircraft on the ramp. The glass is usually reasonably clean.
- Getting there
- Airside only, so a boarding pass is required.
- Best time
- All day in winter; late morning to late afternoon in summer.
- Lens
- 50–100 mm; an A320 on stand is about 70 mm.
Aero Club Bergamo Guido Taramelli
On the north side of the field, with its own short runway, the aeroclub feels like a separate airfield with a mix of light and sometimes rare piston types. The staff are friendly to visitors.
- Getting there
- Drive around the western end of runway 10 through the village and follow signs for the Aero Club. Ask before entering the apron.
- Best time
- The sun is unfavourable for the main runway from here all day; use it for parked aircraft.
- Lens
- 24–105 mm.
Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.
What you'll see
Ryanair and Malta Air account for the large majority of movements, with 737-800s and 737 MAX 8-200s rotating to Spain, Eastern Europe, Morocco and dozens of Italian and European cities. Wizz Air A321neos and Pegasus to Istanbul add some colour, and in summer Neos and Albastar fly charters to the Mediterranean, Egypt and beyond. At night a few Star Air 767 freighters operate for UPS. The Monza Formula 1 Grand Prix in early September draws extra business jets, and the aeroclub keeps light aircraft busy on the northern strip. Widebodies are rare outside charter and freighter flights.

FAQ
What's that plane over Bergamo?
Spotterra's live map shows all ADS-B traffic over Bergamo and Lombardy in real time, with type, registration and route. Most of what you see low over the city will be a Ryanair 737 heading for Orio al Serio.
Where is the best spot at Bergamo airport?
The free car park near the runway 28 end off Via Tonale. You can park there, it is walkable from the terminal, and runway 28 is the more common direction.
Is BGY worth it for variety?
Only if you like Ryanair liveries and special colours. Come in summer for charters or in early September for Monza Grand Prix bizjets; otherwise Milan Malpensa offers far more variety.
